Djokovic lost to Nadal in a clay tournament (RG?) before this but in the press conference he said he felt Nadal was beatable on clay and people said he was arrogant. We usually say a person is arrogant when they are not good but brag that they can do something unrealistically. Djokovic is a confident person and takes actions for what he saied he wanted to do. He put in the work to improve his clay game and now near the end of his career we all can agree that he proved his words. Not arrogant.

I don't think people said he was arrogant because he said Nadal was beatable. The issue is that in that same interview Novak said he was in control of the match. In that moment, it was clear in his mind that if his back didn't hurt, he would have won. He truly believed it. It was beyond ridiculous to think that way. Yes this state of mind helped him in the future, but saying this at this moment was ludicrous.

If you watch most of gis matches s Nadal on clay, especially when he was younger, Djokovic was the one who attacked more and made Nadal move side to side, but the problem was he couldn’t put the ball away due to Nadal’s excellent defense/counterattacking on clay. And Djokovic tends to get tired after hitting hard too many balls. Remember in the old days before 2011 he used to have an issue with his stamina. I think that’s what he felt, that if he just got a little bit better in stamina or learn to put the ball away better he could win.

I just hate the Nadal’s moon balls. They look very amateurish. Recreational players use them a lot because the opponent is usually not good enough to know what to do against a moon ball. Nadal uses them on clay knowing that if the opponent attacks the ball he would likely be able to chase it, especially on slow clay courts. And because he’s lefty he hits that crosscourt moon ball to most players backhand which makes it hard for them to attack. The best player that can attack those high kicking balls from the backhand is Djokovic. He’s willing to step in and take them on the rise and angle the ball aggressively crosscourt. Man, just in these highlights he hit so many winners with that tactic. Of course he was not always successful with that, probably more failure than success, but still it explains why he’s the best player that beat Nadal more often on clay than any player has ever done. On other surfaces Nadal, knowing that the courts are faster, didn’t hit the ball as high, which to me takes away a little bit of this weapon. This explains why he’s not as good on other surfaces as on clay.
