My father was born in Baghdad in 1934 to Assyrian Christian parents. My father would tell me all the time that when he was a kid in Iraq no one cared about Muslim, Jew, or Christian. Most people lived together, celebrated each other’s holiday together and were genuinely friends. Everything changed as he got older, not just for Jews, but even for Christians..however Jews fled to Israel, all the other minorities had no where to go.

Thank you for sharing your families story. It sounds like what Syrians told me. You are very close with your neighbors and share food daily, but you would never ask them about their religion. Because it doesn't matter.

As an Iraqi, I always heard stories from my grandparents about the Iraqi Jews. I don’t remember ever hearing negative stories or comments. It’s devastating and true nekba to the Palestinians first and foremost, and the rest of the Arab region regards of what religion people where from. As sad as I am to all the lose the Middle East suffered from colonialism, I am still hopeful because the culture we carry has been in the making for thousands of years, the foundation is strong and true history lives on. Thank for such an intellect conversation, Avi is such a wonderful human being, a national treasure.

Please listen carefully It answers all sorts of questions Some pretend that there are no Arab Jews The question is clearly explained here Jews used to be Tunisians, Irakis, Yemenis when there was Palestine and a tiny Isrsrael It is amazing the rapidity with which Jews from all over the world threw off their Arab identity to prone that of a new colonising state😊

This is excellent work, vital work, essential work in such a format that people must be gin to breakdown the down the ignorance, the straightjackets that the 'forced impact' of not concentrating for longer periods upon History. Piece meal or the briefest of brief flashes of ideas/history is a softminded guide approach to enforced ignorance. That's a lot of myth busting right there. The sad thing about what has happened to Diaspora Jews, is the loss of their extremely diverse and in many ways unique culture from the countries in Europe and the Middle East where they lived for millennia.

Love this interview so much. I now have a new perspective on the origins of Zionism and the Israel state. And a greater appreciation for the Palestinian cause. Prof talked glowingly of how the Arabs and Jews coexisted before Israel’s existence. Wonderful interviewer.

Avi Shlain is a brilliant academic and a beautiful human being. I love listening to him, he gives me hope for the possibility of a better world where people can live together in a free Palestine, just as it existed in the past and so it can be again. We have proved it in south africa where, while there remains much work to be done, nevertheless people have come a long way to be able to live together with far more understanding, less fear and prejudice than anyone imagined possible.
