Great review. I copped one of these (49 key) a couple weeks ago and have been loving it. It is absolutely excellent when working with Ableton and it also pretty good with Studio One 5/Reason 11. My Komplete Kontrol S49 mk2 is in the closet now.

Good to hear some of your thoughts on this keyboard. I bought one a month ago after doing a lot of research. I also have the launchpad pro mark 3 and while there is some overlap in function they both have some functionality that’s not replicated. I’ve been producing for a long time and I use chord mode and scale mode all the time. I’ve been using a 25 key controller for a long time (I used to use full size outboard keyboard) and slowly I somehow started using my mouse and computer keyboard to write more and more instead of playing and jamming. The 37 inch key bed was a nice change and it was basically $ 20 more than the 25 key one. The price is great for this keyboard. I mostly use Ableton so after spending a lot of time testing out iPad controllers I decided on something a little more tactile. I’ve had novation gear before and always liked their approach to Ableton control so for me it’s a huge plus. I also looked closely at the NI keyboards but my love for them as a company and software has fallen off.

I just tested turning the volume all the way down in volume mode for the midi input, then switched to pan, cranked the same knob all the way clockwise, and the volume was still muted, I had to actually move the knob for the volume to register the new position of the knob. Perhaps originally it wasn't like this, but it sounds like the issue you are talking about at 2:50 has been resolved in firmware.
@basedvato4 жыл бұрын
This makes scale and chord function on Komplete Kontrol unnecessary - why run a plug in, when you can do it direct from the board. Also it will record the midi, instead of kontrol midi not matching the output if that makes sense. Probably going to cop this to replace my keystep.
@AveMcree4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight! Yes, NI controllers aren't great outboard gear and basically the reason why I got rid of my Maschine (and never bought the Kontrol series). That might not affect other people but it's a deal breaker. Especially since Novation controllers send CC no matter what.

i feel you on the endless encoders, but i don't mind these regular knobs too much. obviously endless would be better but there's something nice about feeling them physically hit the end of their range. and as long as you set them to pickup mode you don't get those parameter jumps like you mentioned. the whole pickup thing is kind of annoying but for how cheap this is and how dope the other features are i'll put up with it.

I actually just opened my Christmas gift of the 49 key version and I have no need of endless encoders and to be honest it can get you into trouble if doing live as you flip in, and out, of vsts/instruments/etc... and where does it begin? With finite encoders I know precisely where it is at and maybe I want the plugin/instrument to start 1/4 of the way this time and next time I pull it in 1/8 etc... but on an endless you just can't control all that easily. On the 49 and 61 there is a lot of wasted space in the upper right corner that they should have thrown on some endless knobs for those special cases. I figure 6 would fit very easily and possibly 8 would.

As someone new to electronic music production and keyboards: * Even I can see how the dials not being endless could be a problem for me. * The quality of the key bed may be lost on me * the built-in chord, melody, scale, and arpeggio generators are very alluring. * The overall feature set/price seems to put this in a sweet spot for me and has me ready to pull the trigger on my first midi controller purchase.

just bought this to hook up to my ju06a, I dont use the encoders as I just automate in fl or use the synthesizer itself to control parameters, pads are slightly worse than the mpk mini but the keys are amazing, each one is wider than the mpk. If you got fat fingers like me you will definitely notice the difference, con is that it is a lot bigger than the mpk and it can mess up considerably if I exit fl studio and come back to it without unhooking it, idk why it does that but overall I like it better than my mpk, hope this helps!

Thank you for this review. I just bought this and most videos speak on the Launchkey generally and not the 37 specifically! A few questions as a newb to Ableton, music theory, keyboards and makign music: 1. Do I need to install all the driver, reason and logic? What do each do? 2. I registered but have Ableton on the 90 trial, have you worked with any of the free packs/susbscriptions that come with the Launchkey? I know you get free software, Splice membership, etc. 3. Any other tips for a 1st time user? Thanks!

Yo Ave! Got the 49-key Launchkey MK3. I love everything about it except the keybed. 4 custom modes, chords, scales... midi-learnable transport section (Channel 16, useful for NON-Ableton use)... pads can be fully color-coded, and buttons, too (the SL MK3, which I also have-- has no color-coding on the pads or buttons, annoyingly.. just colors that match the Tracks/Parts). I really dig it, but as others have mentioned.. the keybed is meh. Hard velocity for me seems to have the most natural response, piano-wise.. which is kind of bizarre. Normal or soft should do, but they're too soft/light velocity. Side note--- the Launchkey Mini MK3 NEEDS a brightness setting, like these regular ones do.

I normally don't like recommending gear to people because we all have different taste. However, I think you should know a few things about buying desktops or laptops. First thing, never buy a budget desktop or laptop ever. They often sacrifice build quality, specs, etc for good price point. If you want to save a few dollars and don't expect to travel. Then I recommend getting a desktop (high recommend buying a gaming desktop). If have plans on traveling a lot. I recommend getting a laptop (yes a gaming laptop)... Gaming laptops usually cost more than gaming desktops (since you can go any where with it). However, desktops have an overall better performance. Here's my gaming laptop I recently bought kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHqzlaiieMp6nac
