Dionnes jazz version is great but smooth. But Whitney conjures up a poem of run - and vibrato falsetto variations. Expressive, constantly increasing and, as the crowning glory, this Alfie staccato and great head voice run, her very own signature. All in all, an unpretentious master class, almost soul jazz. 💖💖❤️❤️

Poor thing she was so upset over the passing of Tupac that day, that she just couldn't think of the lyrics, to her favorite song, this is her all-time favorite song, she could never make a choice between this song by Dionne, yesterday by her mother, & Ain't No Way by Aretha, but somehow this one always won, along with ain't no way when it came to performing them, but she loves Alfie a little more than she did ain't no way, I truly do believe, is such a beautiful song, no one really takes the time to put the lyrics together to understand them, what is basically saying, is people that do good things for people, do they only do them, when other people are watching it, birthday like it's your job like a nurse or a doctor or something, does it end when you go home, & no one's watching, like you can't be good to people all the time🤷♂️, or just because you had a hard life growing up, it's perfectly normal, and you have the right, to Rob, kill and steal from people 🤷♂️, or its ok to, go out & get drunk, then cheat, and beat up on ur wife on Saturday, as long as you go to church on Sunday, to preach or go to Mass, and confession 🤷♂️, This song has such a strong message, and even stronger meaning to it, is just having a conversation with someone, asking questions, basically on how to make the world a better place, and so when they get to the first where she says,🎶 As sure as I believe, there's a heaven above, I know there's something, something that even non-believers, can believe in, like I believe in love Alfie, without true love you just exist, until you find the love you missed, you're nothing🎶 very very very very very very powerful

@@markpeter4304 there are two live television performances of Cher doing Alfie. The first one is where she delivered a stellar performance. This is one song that always got lost in translation with Whitney. While she's my favorite singer, her melisma and embellishments distract from rather than enhance the melodic line of Dionne's classic.
@josephcarbetta37952 жыл бұрын
I hear what both of you are saying but Burt Bacharach always made Dionne sing it exactly the way he arranged it. Some of his material can be very mundane, and sadly hasn’t aged all that well. Whitney’s interpretative genius makes me appreciate his lyrical genius in a way I hadn’t before. I don’t think they got along super well, hence why the Oscars 2000 Over The Rainbow fiasco. Some say it’s bc she was at rehearsal stoned with Bobby…I think she found Bacharach very controlling as a collaborator!
@josephcarbetta37952 жыл бұрын
@lsaturn01 yes I heard him say that too! In contrast with Celine, who was like the Dionne to his Burt, since she’d do it precisely how he wanted her to do it. Whitney’s melisma probs made composers sweat bullets, without her level of control it could lead to over singing and can ruin an arrangement (sorry Patti LaBelle 😬) but I’d be shocked if he wasn’t utterly moved by her performance of Alfie at the DC HBO concert of 1997.

@lsaturn01 I actually went back to listen to Dionne’s and it just wasn’t something I would ever want to really listen to again as with many Dionne songs from back then. When I hear her sing no one in the world then hear the Anita Baker version it’s night and day
