I won’t be buying it then. Where I live SUVs are the only choice. I need the four wheel drive and raised driving position for safety. Anyway, Mercedes are launching a GLA replacement shortly after the CLA which will, I am sure, echo many of the same design cues.

Yes sadly concept cars always look incredible but by the time they make it to production, there’s safety, regulations, laws, aerodynamics and more than come into play. Although I certainly wouldn’t say no to the CLA Concept! It looks awesome!

I’m not sure why the heated seats would come on then. They do retain a memory setting for a few mins, like if quickly run into the shops and come back. But if you haven’t got pre-entry enabled by a time or pre-entry with key enabled not sure why it would do that. I’ve never come across a Mercedes that just randomly puts heated seats on…

Hi Nick. Firstly a really informative video, your one lucky chap getting to see all this development. I have to say the red concept cla to me it's too futuristic inside and not for my liking. However, the projected ev range is really impressive isn't it , not only that, the new 1.5 petrol engine sounds equally impressive along with the hybrid system. I know you said this is being developed by M benz but as mentioned I'd read it was being produced in China then finished off in Germany. Perhaps that was incorrect. Either will sell really well I reckon especially with the predicted returns. Cheers Nick

It's 48v hybrid system seems like to me a mild hybrid still. Unlike those at Toyota, Lexus and Hyundai's full hybrids. With a bigger battery pack that can really drive the wheels. But still not as big as plug in hybrids will actual full EV driving range. My Lexus 2022 IS indeed has very long lasting brake pads and rotors. After 82,000 km, they are still looking new.

I am headed into my local MB tomorrow to finalise a new GLC 300 DE with Airmatic and rear axle steering. I am essentially trading in a Tesla Model 3 that I own and going from fully electric to plug-in hybrid, but your video has got me thinking. @@npoleary ​ We do a few long road trips, and every summer we do a mega trip across the EU, which is approximately 13,000 to 14,000 km. In 2023, we did it in a Tesla; all things considered, it was great thanks to the Supercharger network, but you always have to stop to charge and you have charge anxiety. Over the course of the trip it adds up to a lot of time being spent charring. 

 In Jan 2024, we got the new E220d, and my word, that blew my mind in terms of range, fuel efficiency, and overall comfort. 4.3/100 L and 1,500 range on a full tank. 23-25 kms per litre of diesel was unreal for me. So thinking about switching to a plug-in is the GLC due to its largest range in any plug-in real tests of 110 km vs the 131 advertised by MB, and that should be enough for the day-to-day, and having the option of diesel for larger distances, and overall, MBs are much more comfortable than Teslas . Lastly, I trade cars in often, and MB diesels hold their value much better compared to electrics.

The tech looks good but they need to put similar effort into the look of the cars. At present, the merc electric range looks very similar and appears to be styles on a bloated dolphin. I’m a merc fan and have recently purchased a CLE53 but didn’t go electric as they don’t have a elec coupe and they all look like family wagons.

@@npoleary love the CLE53, it’s a great car to drive. I’ve only done about 2500 miles in it but all good so far. The only disappointing aspect is the exhaust sound which is nothing like the European CLE53 or my old C43. I purchased the car after seeing your review and comments. 👍 Having to start the dash cam is also a bit annoying, it needs a shortcut on the screen (similar to the speed warning)

Glad you’re enjoying it, on a couple of models I’ve found there is a dashcam symbol top left which allows you to start it from there. If I remember it’s two clicks though

I managed to achieve a remarkable 325 miles in a staggering 2 mins of filling my 25 litre tank on my motorbike....incredible. Even more incredible, in just 5 mins, I achieved an unbelievable 650 miles when I added 66 litres to my diesel Mercedes! EVs are not the future, they were meant to be a cash cow, but have now been found out.

Sadly using this comparison will always be that way round in 2024 and 2025. However I have an electric car on test at the moment (video coming soon)…. on multiple times over the past couple of weeks I have charged this car from near flat, I’m making good use of it! It is costing me £4.93 for a full charge to do over 300 miles. Diesel with a 66L tank priced at £1.40 = £92.40 Range= 650 miles Electric car on test at the moment = £4.93 Range= 346 miles It takes longer to charge yes…but if that scenario works, if you can charge it while you sleep they can for some people work out. However, if you need to use 650 miles every day or even every two days, then yeah it might not be right.

@@npoleary Nick, thank you for the reply. The issue comes when all the introductory tariffs and the taxation increases next year on EVs. More importantly, there is an agenda behind this. I used to work at the top Applied Research uni in Europe, ranked in the top 4 in the world. A colleague who was doing his PhD with Nissan, whose European Design and Manufacturing research centre was on our campus, showed me a paper. This was back in 1999. The paper was called "From the Exhaust Pipe to the Chimney Stack: the Myth of the Electric Car". This paper has disappeared completely from all known scientific repositories. I wrote to Mercedes a few years ago when they started claiming that their EVs were emission free. I pointed out, that according to the IAEA, 58% of electricity is generated by the burning of hydrocarbons. Not long after, they changed their claim to "zero local emissions". The real problem is that renewables do not contribute significantly to electricity generation, because the bulk of the non-HC burning is nuclear, followed by hydropower. On top of that, the greedy, idiot politicians, don't realise that you need electricity to produce renewables. Cutting off access to HC electricity, as we have done by destroying relations with Russia, sanctioning their energy, destroying the Nord Stream pipelines, refusing to pay and honouring contracts pales into significance when looking at the environmental damage that EVs and their production does. Did you know that 1 metric tonne of lithium oxide, requires 24, MILLION litres of FRESH water? The lithium triangle is composed of Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. Bolivia cares about its citizens and has limited the production of lithium oxide by evaporation. Similarly Chile is the same. That hasn't stopped our friends attempting to influence elections, change regimes and plunder country's rsources. Miliei's "election" in Argentina wasn't a democratic win. It was a win for Wall Street and he's ramped up the desertification of farming land, grazing lnd for cattle......why are we being pushed to eat plastic meat and insects? Can you join the dots? Congress openly stated that there are $7 trillion worth of resources in the Donbas, and Europe's largest lithium deposits. The Donbas wanted to be part of Ukraine, and autonomously govern itself. All taxes, resources and citizens would belong to Ukraine. That was the deal signed twice by the Ukraine, France and Germany with Russia, it was known as the Minsk Agreements. There were two signings because Ukraine didn't comply with the terms of the first, which were to stop bombing the Donbas and to stop arresting people for speaking Russian, cancelling Russian culture and the Russian language. This started in 2014. Can you see a trend here? Not one war is about ideologies, it has always been about resources and the control of them. Through greed and stupidity, the West will lose the biggest European deposit of Lithium. (PS not all Lithium is extracted by evaporation, but it is in South America)......Finally, I would like to say that Hydrogen is the future, but as they milked the diesel engine, now it's EVs, we will head to hydrogen. The UK has got one hydrogen terminal in the North East already built and one in build phase. Nord Stream 2 was also carrying Hydrogen, which we were gojng to use.........(Sorry for no paragraphs, Nick, if I press "return" I will commit the comment). I hope you can see why EVs are front and centre of many issues, not just range!

Wow that is a lot of info! Yes you’re right, zero emission is incorrect as nothing out there is zero emissions. We all cause emissions whether we like it or not, it’s just being responsible about what we do day to day. I can’t blame anyone for trying new things such as battery electric vehicles etc but that is the way it’s going. I don’t know a place where to get hydrogen from for a car where I certainly know where to get electricity from. Mercedes tested hydrogen years ago and stopped because they didn’t see it viable. All I can say is we’ll have to watch this space and see what evolves over the years 😊

Next year??? Bruuuh They absolutely shouldn't have started the official content roll out then. Especially not the videos on the official channel....first 9 minute video was useless and too corporate. I'm literally getting 10x the info just watching channels like yours. That's at least 8-10 weeks of excruciatingly slow info drops. That's gonna kill the hype for this more than anything. If the camo was coming off in a month or less, I'd at least understand. This is way too innovative and important a car for Mercedes- for them to mess the official content drop timings this much is weird.

This engine comes from BYD maybe they changed little but now you know before they share now BYD and Mercedes is out of alliance BYD is 100 independent they stop works together ofc both takes shared things

That’s not quite right. The internal combustion engine in the new CLA is 100% developed in house by Mercedes (they explained this to me on a couple of occasions) but it is produced / made by their partner Geely.

There’s always models coming out on everything so don’t worry. Apple have just released their new MacBooks. I really want one but by the time I have some pennies saved the next one will be out 😅 Same for phones! Haha CLA is expected to be announced early next year, which based on previous launches probably will mean late next year before people take delivery of them. You could get it the year after (depending on how long you’re keeping yours)

Thanks for an interesting video. As usual. It's going to be an exciting few years with all the new tech coming out. The only news I don't like is that the engine is going to be made in China and then sent to Germany for assembly. That's a no-no in my books.

From what i see, the front part is designed following the eqe and sticking witht hat awful looking concept they have, so sadly, we will continue to live in the world of ugly cars. I think the current CLA is probably one of the most attractive cars out there and its going to be sad to see it go.

Not a plug in hybrid! Mercedes specifically stated to me that they weren’t doing it on this model. So you’re good! 👍🏼 It kind of is a hybrid but not a plug-in one, name to TBC at the moment.
