"Uri Berliner, a senior editor at NPR who penned an op-ed last week accusing the broadcaster of liberal bias, has resigned from the company.
In social media post Wednesday, Berliner published his resignation letter to NPR leadership in which he called the network “a great American institution” and distanced himself from recent calls to “defund” the outlet."

In High school journalism was reporting the facts. Editorials were opinion pieces WRITTEN BY EDITORS. I used to enjoy NPR and BBC but they forgot their mandate and began left leaning op eds for broadcasts in general. Kudos to Mr. Berliner for speaking up. It takes a lot of courage to "Face the music".

I'm a 61-year-old white American woman. I live in the Duluth Minnesota area. I used to respect journalism but I think it's lost it's way. Most of it is are you left or are you right and hardly any of that is what you see right in front of you. I remember being able to turn on the news and what I seen was honest reporting. Not anymore I don't see it anymore. Between the written word and what I see on the television nobody's taking it honest look at what's going on around the world. I don't see any reporting on how many bases Russia has in Africa or how much China is taking over South America. None of this has been on the news The only thing I see these days is crap on the news.

Ana: "I don't understand what the motive is here" At the top management level, the motive is to (1) incite the emotions of their audience to increase engagement while (2) not offending any corporate sponsors or advertisers. Media have discovered that in a competitive landscape, the most reliable way to build an audience is by eliciting emotional reactions. If you can get people angry or outraged, they'll keep watching. BUT the problem is that all the most outrageous crimes are committed by the oligarchs and corporations, so how to you incense and outrage your audience without offending your sponsors? Of course the answer is that you have to invent new fake things for people to be outraged about that aren't threats to monopoly interests. Welcome to the last 20 years of America. It is done by both left and right media. Instead of Boeing putting your family's lives at risk with shoddy engineering and cost-cutting, it was DEI that made Boeing planes dangerous (/s). Our healthcare outcomes have nothing to do with our healthcare system costing 2x-3x as much per capita as other similarly wealthy countries, our pharmaceutical companies that charge us 100x+ as much for the same drugs are perfect angels, the real threat to our healthcare system are trump voters buying up all the horse medicine (/s).

News are supposed to lose money, that's the point, you're not supposed to chase a profit, cause that inherently biases you and incentivizes you to not be objective and pick sides. You're supposed to do it altruistically as a volunteer, not in a mercenary fashion. You shouldn't need an audience to support it.

@@user-np4fn4kr9h Nah, if you sell ads you are beholden to the advertisers, their standards for propriety will dictate the sort of content you are allowed to make, your presentation style, age rating, a bunch of stuff. Back 7ish years ago there was this event called the "adpocalypse" where a ton of youtubers who were reliant on advertisers were left out in the cold after a move from advertisers to pull their ads, and to avoid that they changed the way in which they did content, actively worsening the experience for everyone who actually enjoyed the content as it was, but ensuring a safe environment for conservative advertisers. In such a situation, everyone loses except the advertisers.

I'd describe myself as a pragmatic leftist - not a radical at all - but I consider NPR to be defenders of the status quo. Their leftist leanings are pretty limited. Closer to being "limousine liberals" than anything else. And there are not two sets of facts that need to be reported. It's OK to dismiss obviously false arguments instead of giving those ideas airtime as long as you present the facts truthfully. Maybe I'd buy that we should expect better from NPR than many, many other news organizations but I'm not convinced that the reaction to this story is anything more than clutching at pearls.
@diranshouse7061
@diranshouse7061 2 ай бұрын
There shouldn't be much of an argument being made. Just an honest presentation of the facts. The moment you start making arguments, then it's an act of activism rather than reporting. As for expecting more from NPR, well if you are anything other than an identitarian leftist, very little about what NPT considers 'reporting' passes as truthful. They take a ridiculous angle to stories that purposely blurred or erase all context and by extension the truth

One of the greatest lies of the 21st Century in the West is the idea that incessantly talking about race improves it! Has to be the greatest con job ever pulled. The only thing the hyper focus on race does is deepen the division. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to notice that race relations are getting worse in spite of racism itself being far better than it ever was. Shout out to black folks who lived in the 40s and 50s. Whoever is behind this push ) and I'm absolutely certain it's some foreign power or multiple powers) causing internal discord amongst Americans is the easiest way to topple America. It's so obvious that it pains me that so many can't see it. It's simply an easy tool for division.

I try very hard to see the humans around us, but it's hard to see the idiots as humans. I worked at Busch gardens for 8 years & had several encounters with racists. I was talking to a co-worker who was from Micronesia & had a guest ask me "how I could work with her?" I told him, "Why shouldn't I work with her? Is it because she has a better tan than I do?" So. You see from the Hamas stuff that he’s a horrible right wing bigot but you don’t see how he’s manipulating you on other issues. He’s lying. It’s a thing they do.

Wow. Even The Young Turks is concerned with the biased direction NPR is heading towards!... 🤦🏻‍♂️ I noticed the persistent bias way back in 2015 and I stopped listening to NPR around that time. However, I'm still surprised at how far the bias has gone.... 😓 Government funding needs to be removed from NPR. NPR no longer services the public good anymore.... 😕

While here I am, worried about the direction TYT is going. She said no credible evidence of foreign election report. Cites the mEuler report, though that report is far from the only or final investigation which has brought charges against who? Russians. Russian spies, FBI impeachment witnesses informed by who? Russian informants, spreading disinformation for shame President Biden impeachment. As Ana states "Its not helpful to omit information to the audience" about NPR...😑

I had the same experience with NPR. It became so obviously and overtly biased that it just turned me off. I've gone elsewhere. Now I'm realizing that the American taxpayer is paying for this and that is not right. We should yank their funding until/unless they become neutral.

Hi hello: I'm here for the straight dope. As a Canadian, I've noticed a stark difference between our media environments... the CBC tends stay neutral in reporting, and I can generally trust them to be a reliable source. For what it's worth, the US media has been going downhill since the FCC got rid of the Equal Time rules. It's all profit motive.

I've been a regular listener of NPR since its inception. I appreciate your reporting here and there certainly are probably reporters who are more liberal than not at NPR. That said, there is a knee-jerk reaction to "give equal time to both sides" even when one of those sides espouses lies which have already been disproven. That's not journalism. That's assembly line automation. There is nothing more NPR than the NPR Politics Podcast and if you listen to that you will have a very good balance an analytical perspective that is essentially devoid of political leanings. I'm sure Mr Berliner has experienced those things he complains of within NPR. But for the most part, I'm not upset when stories are left out where the story itself is premised on falsehood.

Wow. You are wrong. NPR is extremely left leaning. There is nothing about them that can be considered “balanced”

I had a hard time understanding your take on the bird story. Was Anna angry that NPR covered it? Was she angry that Uri took it seriously? For me, the fact that NPR would publish a story that bird names are racist is telling and suggests that Uri had a point.
