The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Bob Boilen | August 9, 2021
Having spent time with Collections from the Whiteout, Ben Howard's sonically adventurous fourth album, I was curious to see how he would adapt these songs to the Tiny Desk (home) concert format. So when the opening shot shows Ben in a room alone, an acoustic guitar in hand, it was both an "oh yeah!" and an "uh-oh" moment. Gone were all those textures that he, Aaron Dessner, and a load of talented musicians had worked on, but front and center was that delicate, reflective voice that I love. It's a voice that, in the recent past, was often swarming in effects and buried in reverb.
So as Ben Howard opens his Tiny Desk with the album's opening track, I found myself zeroing in on the oblique and painterly images of "Follies Fixtures": "Walk with me to the burning spire. / We can count the dеad on Ender's pyre. / The dusty towns whеre the number's found / Don't quite match the missing." He later premieres a new tune, "Oldest Trick In The Book."
"Thanks for having me and allowing me to play the slight variations of songs that I'm forced to settle with at the moment," Ben says, and with that he kicks on the drum machine and plays the music that drew me to his work in 2021. Watch those fingers on the guitar and hear that tone. "Far Out," indeed.

I do agree. The NPR office is truly a leveling field. That and the amazing recording and mixing creates something worth of the success it has got. But this Tiny desk from Home is far from that. Some artists provide a raw experience, just them and a basic recording/mixing behind it (this one for example). But others have a very elaborate show, everything measured, with a team of people behind managing the recording/mixing, aesthetics, etc. (Dua Lipa's comes to mind). Anyway.. the magic behind the Tiny desk recording/mixing has a name: Josh Rogosin. Take a look to the AMA he had on Reddit. Is really interesting. He is the man!

His music is beautiful, sad, happy, intense, calming, thought provoking, mesmerizing, hypnotizing, quirky, sentimental, and oddly nostalgic. It's like being in a desert for days without water and getting that cold gulp of water to reinvigorate you. When I found Ben at my worst, he reinvigorated my will to fight on. His work is absolutely worth the journey. And I wish I could experience it all for the first time again.

@@ian8502 Yeah, I'm really dying to listen to live versions of "Metaphysical Cantations" and "Make Arrangements" from the new album. And I also think "Sage That She Was Burning" acoustic version only with the guitar and piano would sound amazing! I'm loving his live versions too! This may be because I'm able to read and understand the emotions of the song better through his expression, when he performs live. There are so many thrilling performances that still give me shivers every time I watch them here on YT; Everything - Glastonbury 2013, End of The Affair, IFWWW & Towing The Line at Later With Jools Holland, every live version of The Fear... I can go on with the list.😋 Ben Howard, he simply is the best!

Just back from watching Ben live. Mesmerising gig as was his last, when he played through Noonday Dream. I’ve grown up with his music, from starting to figure myself out as a 16 year old listening to ‘Black Flies’, to my first relationships and subsequent break ups replaying ‘the Burgh Island EP’, to finding myself watching sunsets more peacefully hearing Noonday songs. His music has progressed and developed at the same speed as me, and I’ve found myself loving an artist throughout his varied music (I usually overplay and burn out artists). I look forward to the journey ever more. As an aside, last nights gig was the same as 2 years ago - the crowd. People are going expecting 10 year old classics from Every Kingdom, which I imagine is frustrating for Ben. He’s been singing those songs for years, and is a different person writing Metaphysical Cantations as he was back then writing Keep Your Head Up. When he does sing the ‘favourites’, i personally love his new take and approach to them. Unfortunately, a lot talk over him at the gigs and grow impatient at the songs they don’t recognise, chanting “we want the wolves”. Some feedback online seems to carry the same sentiment. Bens gigs are intimate, especially at the moment and it’s a shame some aren’t along for that journey right now. I’d suggest seeing him at a festival might bring out more of the popular hits. But please don’t go expecting just the Spotify top played, just listen to some of the most beautiful chilled out songs and enjoy.

This instantly brings back memories of summer weekends when I would hang out with a friend who I practically see as another brother. We smoked cigars, drank the best wine we could afford and ate seafood before we would head to town in hopes of finding a female companion to end the night with. On each of those nights ‘Every Kingdom’ was our third companion, either playing in the background of our conversations on the balcony or providing those melancholic vibes while we just stared at the seagulls flying by. Ben, thank you for those beautiful memories.

I regularly come here. Not only to listen to Ben playing these perfect reinventions of his own songs, but also to look at the perfectly arranged ensemble of the picture he is part of: Sitting between bookshelf and plant, in front o a closed curtain that probably holds back the oppressing heat of an Ibiza summer. This is a true image of a longing, maybe for the laziness of mediterranean summer afternoons, I don't know exactly...but it keeps me returning. Thanks Ben and NPR.
