The NYT article led me here. "T-Pain used his Tiny Desk performance to demolish the idea that he lacked talent, sitting beside a single electric-piano player and singing, beautifully, with no digital adornment. The video of his set went viral, not least among those only just learning that his use of Autotune was artistic flair, not a crutch; it remains one of the most watched of the hundreds of sessions Tiny Desk has produced."

Excellent post. I'm starting to think he used audio-tune to distinguish himself from other artists. It's part of his brand. You sit in the car, hear that audio-tune and know instantly it's T-Pain. Yeah, now those comments about audio-tune needing T-Pain are starting to make sense.

To the people talking about the lyrics: The songs that he is singing were never meant to be "deep" and "serious". The fact that he is performing them acoustically and they sound waaaayyyyy better than the originals should show you how much talent he has. Let's be serious, do you think a song called "Buy You A Drank" is going to be some deep philosophical song? lol

You can tell he's nervous. He wrings his hands and tries to diffuse tension with jokes yet his talent is shining so bright. It's speaking volumes and I don't know if he knows. Oddly this was comforting to see someone that good and talented act just like how I think I would have acted in that scenario. Particularly dealing with my own self-doubt and a desire to make music. T-Pain used autotune as an artistic decision in his music. He wasn't trying to hide deficiencies in his voice. Like, come on, if that'd really been his intention, then you wouldn't have have even noticed. Modern 'autotune' technology is sophisticated enough to make the voice corrections unnoticeable, and virtually every singer you listen to nowadays use it (not saying that as a diss to modern artists; it's just how it is nowadays). T-Pain CHOSE to make his autotune very obvious because that sound was part of his musical vision. Ragging on T-Pain for autotune is like accusing Daft Punk of being fake for using voice modulators, it makes no sense.

Actually If you think about I don't think T-Pain wouldn't have gotten as famous as he is now if he didn't use Auto tune. If he used is regular voice he wouldn't have been noticed as much because its not rare to find someone who can sing good. And thats why he used it. Its pretty genius. His real voice is like a secret weapon he can pull it out as a last stop so he can be recognized again.
@samuelvasquez974
@samuelvasquez974 10 жыл бұрын
Exactly. That's what people don't get. T-Pain never used Autotune cause he needed it to sing, it was to draw attention to his music and create a sound that was really unique at the time. The guy is waaay underrated for the amount of versatility he has. He writes, sings, and produces all his songs and then to top it off he can actually dance quite well despite being a chubby dude.

Saw T-Pain do a small college show at my buddys very small private college in Florida a few years ago. Maybe 300 people there and he put on a show like he was doing the Super Bowl halftime show, energy was on 1000% from start to finish and the whole crowd had know choice but to match his charisma, one of the best live performances I've every seen in my life.

1. His postlude to 'Buy U A Drank' at 3:25 is VERY subtle but amazing, I feel like that was overlooked. 2. "Everytime she do it, it's for me and myyyyyy" at 5:37 is just hilarious, YET still amazingly sung. 3. Piano was an amazing artist and hype man T-Pain says "I just got wrapped up in myself" and he responds with "That's how its 'posed to be".

New immigrant in New York City. Walk into Fashion 40 in 2007 on 40th and 6th on a Thursday after the work on a chilly November day. First thing I hear - T-Pain + auto tune singing ‘Imma buy you a drank’. Instant fan. 17 years later, hearing him on Tiny Desk. Blown away again. Super talented!

Here, after hearing what Usher told him many year ago. Its infuriating because Tpain did so much for the music space . Many of his tracks just take me to a good place. I guess the moral here is that an artist should just create, no matter, create.

@@oaktowndimond668 I don't think that was my point. Kanye did it for a stylistic choice as well. I wasn't a Kanye fan much when I was younger but he does make good music. I always knew TPain could sing based on the fact I didnt see other rappers doing so. Some people are talented in more than one area and some aren't.
@oaktowndimond668
@oaktowndimond668 3 жыл бұрын
@@BleedingLiar17 true, but for T Pain, he was using auto-tune purely as a stylistic choice. kanye most likely saw the effect as a way to "sing" without the capability to actually do so. but as T Pain said in the past, auto-tune is not magical sorcery, you still have to be able to sing and know how to manipulate it. that's probably why kanye had T Pain partially produce 808s. kanye needed an actual singer to show him the capabilities and also the limits of the software. but yeah, i'd say Kanye is definitely the superior word smith and instrumentalist of the two.
