How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. @@GuiHppn I didn't know if it was situational, or a consistent thing. The Gods of the "overworld" in Greek mythology never really liked Hades due to his attitude and behavior. My husband and I have been following Mitchell since her concept album in 2010. It was the only CD I would listen to in my car for two straight years. The concept version of "Wedding Song" was our wedding song--impromptu cheesy dance choreography included. Listening now to this heartfelt and haunting music and seeing how it has transformed into a full-fledged musical on Broadway gives me so much joy and anticipation of where it will go next--and where I and my family will grow as well. I'm pregnant and sitting here holding my belly and crying a little bit thinking about how I want to share my love of music and storytelling with my little one and how this musical and Anaïs Mitchell's songs and spirit will be a part of growing up and growing together. Thanks for this Tiny Desk Concert and thanks for all of this incredible love and devotion to creating beautiful art and story.

I only discovered the original concept album after I learned about the musical. I can only imagine how cool it is to be so connected to a project like this, and to watch it become what Hadestown has. I've seen a few musicians do projects like this with the explicit intent to turn them into staged shows, but they rarely ever get put on, let alone given the full Broadway treatment. It must've been really exciting to hear that an album that meant so much to you was made into a Broadway show like this (but in hindsight, it's not surprising, considering how GOOD it is).

I can never get over how well the Muses' voices blend together. That is so impressive and beautiful. It really works and shows how the Muses work together as a group. It's awesome!
@ooglemonster2 жыл бұрын
Fates, not muses. Eurydice is sometimes referred to as a “muse” in the musical, and Orpheus is the son of a muse, but those fine ladies are Fates, who are far crueler than a muse would ever be. 😉

I love how they tried to recreate outfits from the stage production with their wardrobe. Yes, the cast is dressed more colorfully, but the style itself is still recognizable especially witj Orpheus, Persephone, Hades and Hermes. Ultimately I think it's a nice mix of characters' "fashion" and actors' personalities👀

I have been around musicals literally my entire life; it's not an exaggeration when I say that this is the best one ever written. It succeeds in so many ways that other musicals have tried and either failed or just come out as passible but ultimately dishonest. Rock on, cast of Hadestown!

With everything going on in the world, this was especially powerful to watch. The cast, orchestra and crew are so diverse- not just because they have to be, but because every single person working on this show is extremely talented at what they do and they worked hard to be there. People of color aren't in media less than white people because they are less talented. They aren't given the opportunities and recognition that they deserve. And yet- this musical is so unique because of the blend between all of the beautiful voices and styles that Anaïs Mitchell pulled together. This music of this show draws form southern blues, folk, and jazz- a genre that black people just straight up invented and white people basically just took from them. As a white person, I will never feel guilty for being white- a race that throughout history oppressed others, but I will never take for granted my privilege, nor the art that black folks and people of colour in general have brought into the world. Things like Hades Town are the reason I stand with Black Lives Matter.

I’ve been blessed to see Hadestown in its original incarnation way back in 2007 at Johnson State College in Vermont, my alma mater. It floored me then and continues to do so. Every time I saw Anäis do a show (tiny little ones with like 30 people. Thank you Vermont!), I gushed to her about how much I love Hadestown, as well as her songs. I want to play Persephone SO badly. Maybe one day I shall be lucky enough to do so.

I've listened to the soundtrack a million times, and I'm always ABSOLUTELY in love with how Hades gets so caught up in the emotion of his propaganda that he temporarily drowns out the chorus (25:20 here). I can't say anything on the YT version because they have comments disabled, but if somehow one of the cast ever sees this: that's brilliant and it gives me chills every time. Y'all are awesome.

It sure would be nice if they would start showing new Broadway online... instead of holding an iron tight grip on location specific stage performances. Time to shift the meta, I would have paid $50 to stream this the moment I saw this tinydesk.
