In WW2 tactical doctrine, the Allies considered the machinegun as support for the riflemen. Germany considered riflemen to support the machinegun. With the GP MG34/42 weapons they were able to generate firepower far in excess of their foes. One of the reasons it took so long to defeat the Wehrmacht.
Walther: Hitler, do you want our next rifle to be semi-automatic or bolt action? Hitler: Yes

well thats why Germnay produced the STG44, even better than a semi automatic rifle

Which led to AK-47, as the inventor was in a tank that got destroyed by the germans but had no means to effectively continue the fight.

@@n00bzzzjlthe ak was more inspired by the Garand than the STG, the bolt being the main reason

Okay so what it seems like you where missing. In the entire Semi Auto bit was that Semi Auto Rifles where exspensive i mean the Amercians did struggle especally in the start of the war too equip all their troops with them. And is why you find Americans use the good ol Springfield rifle in the early bits of the war. So while yes a semi auto rifle is good at the time it wasnt really neccesery like the Germans did pretty well against American soldiers with their Bolt Action rifles.

The US Marines had it the worst arguably. They were near last on the list so for most of 1942 they used a majority M1903 rifles and had to buy there own SMG's the M50 & M55 Rising to try and equip more men with them. The new equipment got to them eventually but when we entered the war most if not all of the Marines had a M1903 as standard issue with only a few M1928 and M1928A1 SMGs comparatively along with Heavy water cooled machine guns mixed with the 1919's they earlier Early B.A.R's.

Then Germany came out with the G3 the most beloved rifle in the history of the world, if only Germans and their friends weren't the only ones who could afford it.

not behind in small arms design, just more focused on multi purpose machine-guns.

it maybe complicated but I think it's cool for a bolt-action semiautomatic rifle.

The thing about the German doctrine is... the MG shoots 1500rpm to fully supress the enemy so we need the rifleman with accurate fire... resulting in the kar98 since the gewehr 98 did so good... why not keep up the design. This worked well against the french... because they had bolt action aswell... and they MG's werent as good. So compared to the french.. the German small arms were betters. Then you have the Russians... the big steppe's where range is key(kar & mg34/42)... and the huge cities and industrial centers where CQB fast firing SMG's are the best(PPSH) And when the Germans decided that fast firing rifleman was key... they got the Gew 41 and 43 which were pretty oke... but it had its problems. So when the Germans came up with the STG44 or MP44... a 30round semi/full automatic rifle with medium caliber.. they basically hit jackpot. Too late and not as many produced... but the chances one rifle changing a war aren't that big.

I suppose you could take pretty much any semi-auto and put a valve on the gas block to turn it on/off. Then you'd have a semi-auto or straight pull bolt action.

In ww2 Germany was the strongest superpower in the world and had the best guns and vehicles...the things that lost them the war were that they were outnumbered 10-1 on all fronts, and Hitler's strategic mistakes. Not that they didn't have a semi-auto rifle until 1941
