It's a matter of perspective, taking also in considerations the times chuck berry lived which did not favor black or latinos at the time so critics and tv moguls to decide on these terms for the public to absorb, consume and buy, and decide on like who is who in the music world. I personally prefer the guitar style and lyric creativism of chuck berry over elvis any day. And like many others consider him the king of rock and roll, and others believe it is little richard which is considered "the originator" and architect of rock and roll. The media has a way to brainwash so I read history to absolve myself from these ideas or norms serve to the public again to absorb consume and buy techniques.

@Dyn Jarren All True/I've always felt the same way about Chuck as you do. Amen! However, we gotta give his Piano Player Johnny Johnson some credit for some of those grooving runs, and the cumulative effect of blue grass/hillbilly; ragtime music, etc. as the backbone or some of the ingredients to his inimitable genre defining, foundational swinging sound.

It's been said that Johnny Johnson was the heart of Chuck's band. Saw him play at that club in Mill Valley about 20 years ago. Incredible talent.

piano player is disputed today, many consider older discographies wrong, and johnson himself recounts playing on sweet little sixteen, telling about leonard chess prompting him to do more piano swirls till his fingers were bleeding.

SO this guy is like, the real king of rock and roll, one of the founding fathers of the genre, he played the licks that every one copied. And he played that awesome Gibson es350... Today Gibson guitars has a signature model for every electric guitar player under the sun. Billy Gibbons (zzTop) Eric Clapton Peter Green (fleetwood Mac) Gary More... SO why the hell isn't there a Chuck Berry Model es350 coming out of the Gibson plant? It almost seems people think Rock and ROll didn't begin till the Beatles played the Ed SUllivan show... How come none of the black pioneers of Rock are being immortalized with slick Gibson Guitars??
@msytmc8 жыл бұрын
+Bugsy Cline I would imagine some company along the way has had a signature Chuck Berry guitar. There are black pioneers belove by guys like us. Just look.

Michael D I've been collecting guitars for 30 years. I owned a music store for over 10 years. I have spoken with Gibson reps by the dozen and even the CEO him self ... There has NEVER been a Chuck Berry Model Gibson es350. Despite the fact that Berry Made the model famous. I am aware that there are replicas by over seas manufacturers of OTHER artists... but we're talking about Gibson here. Gibson is as American as Henry Ford and apple pie. Rock and Roll is America's only true musical creation. Chuck Berry is the True Living King of that music... In particular when it comes to the electric guitar. Which as you may or may not know, the electric guitar is the most important ingredient in a ROCK AND ROLL recipe. Gibson seems to have no trouble celebrating the careers of UK born musicians, but they have this way of shunning America's founding fathers of rock (and it's founding mothers) despite the fact that they ALL played Gibson, over the Mexican slave labor Fender guitars.

+Jack Kadalikkadan Well we've had affirmative action legally making white men second class citizens since Nixon invented it, our President is black now, and objectively even after paying off his lawsuits for being a peeping tom spying on women in the lady's room of the club he owns, spending the JFK era in prison for statutory rape of a minor, never serving the military or going to college, Chuck Berry is still a millionaire and like most white college graduate military veterans without criminal records I'm not so I personally find remarks about this alleged "white privilege" i'm supposed to have offensively racist and out of touch with reality. I love Chuck Berry, but most of his problems like most of his success was not because of his skin complexion but simply because he's Chuck Berry, Don't degrade people by putting them in identity groups,

Muddy Waters, BB King, T-Bone Walker, Howlin Wolf. All those were before Chuck Berry. The first electric blues guitarists played the licks "that everyone copied."

Bugsy Cline I am very well aware that the guitar is important. Duh. I know music fairly well myself. And I love Chuck Berry. Have a CD in right now of him. I will have to look into the accuracy of your statements about no Chuck model , but there has to be other black artists out there.

I am incredibly blessed to have played live with Chuck Berry in a backup band for him at a show in Columbus Ohio, it was terrifying as a young man, Chuck arrived and didn't even let us know which songs we were playing! Thankfully we heard the guitar chords of "Maybelline" and we all just fell into sync for the next 45 minutes as pure bliss in a musical heaven on stage in front of 5,000 people. What he said to me at the end as he was leaving the venue was worth its weight in gold "You did good, gotta go kid."
