NSW Blue Groper Ban - No index of abundance or stock assessment

From the 1st March 2024, the NSW Government will blanket ban the taking of blue groper by line fishing, in addition to the existing spearfishing ban which has been in place for decades.
Ironically, the minister announced this ban the day before appearing in Mark Banasiak MLC's scheduled hearing into agriculture. Mark dedicated almost all of his allocated time in the hearing to questioning the minister and the department.
It becomes apparent very early on that the ban was imposed based on feeling and emotion, rather than actual science.

The measurement is how their surveys of public sentiment change from start to end. It will be a success if awareness increases and fishing decreases, thereby justifying the ban being permanent, otherwise it will show greater need for the propaganda campaign and the permanence of the ban because the peasant fishermen aren't obeying the nanny state. Heads they win, tails we loose.

Can you catch blue groper in NSW? In NSW Groper can be only taken by using a rod and line or a handline. Groper cannot be speared and have been protected from spear fishing since 1969. Groper cannot be taken and/or sold by any method of commercial fishing. There is a bag limit of 2 Groper per day. This works and is accepted by everybody that has fishing in their lives. I’m sure this women is good at something but fisheries management appears to be a bit over her head

I don't fish for blue groper, but I am a scientist and understand the scientific method - lack of the baseline data means there's no basis against which to judge the success of the ban or otherwise, ie no yardstick as was mentioned. I don’t know what the problem is with the Blue Groper ban, but one thing I can say is that what is known as Shark Island which is in between South Cronulla Point and Shelley Beach in the Sutherland Shire is a known habitat of the Blue Groper. And that people know this and it is a known gentlemen’s agreement that if you spear or hook fish in this area you are not to target the blue Groper using any type of crustaceans for bait or to spear one. And if you accidental happen to catch one to immediately release the fish with as little harm as possible. And let me say this to the Chair this gentlemen’s agreement has been in place long before he was born. I’m 64 and let me tell you that my father told me a out that in the 1960’s. What should happen with this site and sites that are known to have Blue Groper be deemed A Marine Park. Just like about 2.5 miles away from Shark Island in the Port Hacking River, at Shiprock Point. And then this sort of taxpayer funds need not be wasted on stupid enquires such as this malarkey. Just deem all known Blue Groper habitat as a Marine Park and job is done. Nothing further needs to be said. Just do it for the sake of the blue groper and take the political point scoring out of the equation.
