Hello!!! Watching this video right now...with my husband who served on USS Growler in 1962!!! We toured the boat in the early 90s, and he toured again during a Growler reunion. This has been so much fun. At 30:46, I think, I stopped to read the names of the CON and the OOD....he served with them!! My husband was USNA '60. He loved his time on Growler!!!

My dad, Charlie O’Day, was on Growler, too. Last year I sent his bowling shirt, the Growler Screwballs, to their collections dept.

To be accurate the submarine is diesel powered. But it had nuclear cruise missiles. It was the precursor to The Polaris ballistic missile submarines.

Attn: Mike Murtagh. Your comment at 36:05 about "nothings built to detect something that's 300 feet down yet", "nobody's gonna find them" is pure speculation not real facts. We weren't taught in sonar school that subs were undetectable just because they are at 300 feet. It may make them somewhat more difficult to acquire due to layer depth but they certainly weren't undetectable, even in the 1950/60's. 1:00:48..... The cork is to reduce water condensation not sound. There was some sound deadening material in the engineering spaces though.

U.S.S. Growler: SSG Class Guided Missile Submarine Diesel Electric Propulsion Armament: Torpedo : Nuclear Tip Cruise Missiles (4) Regulus 2 Sister Boat: U.S.S. Grayback The Growler did have a desalination plant for fresh water...granted it was a small one, but it did the job...kinda. There are 5 watertight doors on board. The hatch near the crews mess is located adjacent to the sail...just aft of the missile launch rail.
