On 29th October, HMS Astute made the first visit by an Astute-class SSN to Australia. This followed the AUKUS agreement announced in September that will see the UK and US share nuclear submarine technology with Australia. This was the first time an Astute-class submarine has visited Australia, berthing at HMAS Sterling, she was visited by Vice Admiral Mike Noonan, RAN, and other dignitaries.

@Вивсі смокчіте We wont be operating LA class boats. By the time we're ready to field our own boats the LA class will be obsolete, we're talking decades away. The government is pushing for 2030's but 2040's and 2050's is much more practical. Our Submarine Service is already heavily integrated with the RN, all our Commander's go through RN's thresher program and many British officers are already deployed to our training schools. The RN and RAN already permit sailor's to serve aboard each others vessels long term. The Americans will never give our sailors that sort of access. The entire reason the Astute is here is so we can slowly rotate a few officers in and out getting them the training time needed to qualify for the nuke boat side of the Thresher program so that we have actual SSN certified commanders when our facilities are up and running.

Your better of with the RN Astute class boats because the Royal Navy will be getting the. Successor to theses deadly submarines which was in the planning years ago and what new technology be around will be incorporated into the Aussies boats. The new HMS dreadnought class ballistic missiles boats are pushing the envelope of what's possible to maintain the Edge in the underwater war Along withe the next generation RN attack boats when it comes to this arena of warfare the royal navy are the best. Having. To. Deal. with the deadliest Of foes German Kriegmarine U-boat During WW2 in the Atlantic war the Germans taught the British Navy a valuable lesson In protecting Britains merchant fleet. It takes 5 years to build a nuke sub and that is after all the bits have been ordered. They may be offered a couple of Trafalgar class subs in the interim for training etc. There are two which have been refitted and are still in service until the last two Astute class subs are ready.

Hope to see the US start selling it's Nimitz class to the UK, Japan, Australia, etc as they are phased out. Would be a great way to supplement our allies and would create mobile bases for the US navy aircraft. US and the UK are turning Australia into a powerhouse.
@carisi2k11
@carisi2k11 2 жыл бұрын
Why would Australia or Japan need such a vessel for and secondly there would be some issue arising courtesy of the result of WW2 that says Japan can not have such an offensive weapon ever again. Australia just plain doesn't have the personel or the planes to operate such a vessel. If we do get nuclear subs then we certainly won't be getting 8 since we don't have enough submariners to operate 4 and that would have to be an Astute because the Virginia is too large. These nuclear subs go against our policy as we are not a force projection military. Aside from supplementing the US we don't invade anybody that we would require these submarines for. We would be better off forgetting about submarines period and building 2-3 extra hunter class frigattes instead.

@carisi2k11
@carisi2k11 2 жыл бұрын
@@mariosebastiani3214 Actually not really. People don't realise this but our subs don't travel that far. They patrol the coastline of Australia (when they are operational) and the shallows to the north and the approaches to the south china sea Christmas Island, Cocos islands. This is what the air sea gap policy is about. They don't go in to the depths of the big oceans as they are ill suited for that task. This is the problem with these big nuclear subs. They are great big ocean vessels but not really that well suited to the tasks Australia uses them for. This is why we went with the Attack class because it was a smaller vessel suited for the work they were going to do. We would have only ended up with 6 of them and so we should have just built a newer collins that could have provided more automation and reduced crewing to make their original 42 crew operation possible instead of wasting time on the attack and nuc subs which we are ill equipped to build and maintain.
@mariosebastiani3214
@mariosebastiani3214 2 жыл бұрын
@@carisi2k11 About the current use of subs by your Navy, you're totally right. But think of them as a tool (deterrent) for power projection: your Nation decided to step up in a league of Countries which are vying for power with China over the south China sea. Do you really think that the US and UK are willing to just sell their precious nuclear subs without requesting their ally to back them up in "freedom of navigation" ops? I guess your Navy policy on subs use will soon change, and it is quite possible that people will be left unaware of that, "for security reasons".
@carisi2k11
@carisi2k11 2 жыл бұрын
@@mariosebastiani3214 Except this is Australia you are talking about. We have lost almost all of our industry to even be able to build such vessels. We don't have that many submariners in the navy (maybe only 350) and so what is the point of having them if you don't have the submariner to put them to sea. The 6 Collins class takes 58 crew per sub and we can't even get them all operating because they are in dry dock and we can no longer maintain them or we don't have enough submariners. We have other means to do freedom of navigation that doesn't require nuclear subs.

@@carisi2k11 I'm on the same page as you; I'm not stating this was a right choice (I consider it to be a rather dumb one), just that it has geopolitical implications which have not been made clear. @@carisi2k11 Matey you are so far off with your guess on what officers earn it’s obvious you have no connections in the ADF. Even in East Timor a private earned $60K just for a 6 month deployment in the year 2000. There’s a reason it was called the Dili Dash for Cash. You could always tell who had just returned because you’d see a 20 year old private driving the latest model Holden HSV he’d bought with his deployment bonus around base. A private in the SASR earns over $90K a year in peacetime. I can assure you Australian submariners are very well remunerated and receive generous leave entitlements. A specialist able seaman does not earn less than $60K p/a and RAN officers significantly more. Don’t make me post a link to ADF pay rates on the DoD website.
