MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disease that affects your red blood cells. It’s one of the most common and usually most severe forms of a group of red blood cell disorders, called sickle cell disease. In order to survive, your body needs red blood cells to supply oxygen to its tissues. Red blood cells are made inside the center of your bones, called bone marrow. There, immature cells, called blood stem cells, can divide to make all types of blood cells, including red blood cells. Normal red blood cells are disc shaped. Each of them contains protein molecules, called hemoglobin, that carry oxygen, Round, flexible red blood cells flow easily through your bloodstream and pick up oxygen in your lungs. In tiny air sacs in the lungs, called alveoli, oxygen moves into the blood and attaches to the hemoglobin in red blood cells. Then, the red blood cells deliver oxygen to cells throughout the body. In sickle cell anemia, there is a problem with your hemoglobin that makes your red blood cells sickle-shaped instead of round. This is caused by a defective gene that is passed from both parents to children through genetic material in your cells, called DNA. DNA is made up of sections, called genes. Two of the genes, called alpha-globin and beta-globin, contain the “blueprints” for making the hemoglobin proteins. In sickle cell anemia, the beta-globin gene has changed, or mutated. This mutation leads to the formation of an abnormal hemoglobin protein, called hemoglobin S. Hemoglobin S forms into rigid strands inside your red blood cells, which causes the red blood cell to be sickle shaped. Sickle cells can block blood flow, and can cause pain and tissue damage. And, while normal red blood cells last ninety to one hundred and twenty days, sickle cells only last ten to twenty days. Your body may not be able to keep up with how fast the cells are destroyed. As a result, your blood has less red blood cells than normal. This condition is called anemia. The symptoms of sickle cell anemia vary from person to person, but may include episodes of pain in your body parts, such as your hands and feet, lower back, chest, and abdomen; a yellow tint in the whites of the eyes and skin, called jaundice; and feeling tired due to anemia. Over time, sickle cell anemia can lead to complications, such as severe pain; and damage to your eyes, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and joints. Damage to your spleen, an organ that makes immune cells, can increase your risk of infections. The risk for sickle cell anemia is highest among people with ancestors from sub-Saharan Africa; Hispanic areas of South America, the Caribbean, and Central America; Saudi Arabia; India; and Mediterranean countries. To find out more about sickle cell anemia, talk to your healthcare provider.

19 year old sickle cell warrior here! This video is very updated. I was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at the age of three. Drinking plenty of water, eating healthy, taking daily medications and the grace of God has kept me going. My mum started to know more about my disease when she had a Google phone. I was weak when growing up, but it's much better now. My eyes have already been infected by the disease, I'm now on lens. I'm in Medical school now, hoping to help the future generation, so they will not suffer what I/we have already went through. Love ♥️ to all my fellow warriors..... We are strong!

Can this be possible that you have sickle cells in your body but no symptoms or any problem. When I was born doctor told that I have 35% sickle cells in my body but I'm healthy and yeah I never ate any medicine related to this so is this possible?

@@lilsyy16 I do have symptoms. I usually have sickle cell crisis. Since I was born, I was not active like my age mates. My mum said I used to get sick frequently. I had this disease at the age of eight, my eyes were yellow, and I was feeling tired and painful. My disease was diagnosed and treatment began. Healthy eating played a major role in my recovery. The doctor advised me to stay away from some foods such as foods that contains sugar, tea, coffee, and sweets, and he advised me to eat vegetables, red meat, and liver and everything that contains proteins, and I take a lot of rest, and within a year in this way I started to feel better until I recovered, and now I am 37 years old, in good health.

It is worth knowing that the sickle cell mutation is not just an ‘error’. It actually confers increased resistance to malaria parasites which is why the mutation has survived in the geographical areas stated and why sickle cell anaemia is still relatively widespread.

I knew little about the disease until my own children were diagnosed with the disease, what I can comment is thanks for the information, every 19th June of every year is a world sickle cell awareness day yet little has been done by countries to eliminate the disease through awareness. I have two warriors one 19 yrs and another 10yrs but it is not a walk in the park. I always pray that one day this will end for the better for my children and others who have the same condition. thanks

Sickle cell anemia appeared as an adapatation against malaria, since sickle cells can't be paarasitised by the Plasmodium parasite.

My roommate had them she didn't want anyone to know till her mom told me she didn't like that the mother was talking about her sickness. On june 4th me and her were cooking she started asking me about stock and what share I buy , I told her I will write them down and give it to her 3 days went by I didn't see her I slide the list under her door I'm thinking she is in the bathroom since the water was running but its 4 of us in the house, I left on the 11th morning went up to Massachusetts around 10:30pm I got a call my landlord was like your room or her room smells. I'm like ewwu I probably forgot the fish in there , he went on to say I figured it wasn't yours cause we've seen u .ok. well it was her room she passed away. I was shocked .

How best do one handle an SC child(SC genotype)

Like every SS however they have less severe symptoms especially the anaemia

The best way to handle such a child would be to have a blood test and get reports from the person who did this test. They should also consume adequate iron mineral to maintain adequate levels hemoglobin inside their body despite the mutation which prevents the body from getting sufficient oxygen. And they should optionally use medical oxygen.
