I own a '17 Scout 290... that I built from the frame up. It's gone through several iterations. Currently it's running: -140mm Lyrik Ultimate fork (boxxer red) -11spd Shimano SLX drivetrain + 30t Oval chainring (Abs Black) -180mm Oneup dropper & remote -Assegai & Dissector tyres (Exo/Exo+ respectively) -Kore 3.0 rims on DT Swiss 350 hubs (rear has 36 tooth ratchet) -Sram Guide R brakes on 200/180 mil rotors (metallic pads) -780mm Fatboy Funn handlebars -50mm Kore stem -Race Face (chester?) grips -Bontrager saddle -Shimano Zee cranks -XT Spd pedals Great to have a capable HT in your quiver 🤘

That sounds like a killer setup. Is the oval chainring all that it's cracked up to be? Been thinking about it.

@@johnferraro3990If you subscribe to the rhetoric... It's at least, no different (than regular round) and at the same price 👍 At best... it's a game changer for technical climbing and knee pain 🤔 +Roadies swear by them!?
@Marshal_6 Жыл бұрын
@@kingrat738 They are an improvement apparently, but its a pointless excercise if you use flat pedals... Personally I ride clips and stay with the round ring as it doesn`t create any clearance issues that running the egg shaped ring does..

Just got this bike. Im broke so had to settle with the deore package, but DAMN!!! this is a great ride. A bit clunky in the gears but it handles like a dream. A performance bike for £600
@johnferraro39909 ай бұрын
I've had that deore package in the past and thought it was pretty smooth. Try a new cable and clean/lube everything.

what is the frame size here?
@johnferraro399011 ай бұрын
This is a medium
@sman2887 Жыл бұрын
How’s the size? Do you choose i size bigger the normally? I’m 191cm long and 92cm legs considering a xxl size
@johnferraro399011 ай бұрын
These bikes with the 29" wheels feel large to me, so I opt for the smaller size when I'm in between. Easier for me to toss around. There are times when I feel a bit cramped, but not enough that I regret buying the medium.

Hello. Can I ask how many headset spacers are installed? I just bought that frame in a medium and am building it up with parts I have. It would be helpful to know how many headset spacers are installed. Thank you.
@johnferraro39902 жыл бұрын
Sure thing. I have about 21.5mm under the stem and 5mm on top. It's a little more than the bike came stock with, but I like the look/feel.

I forgot Dt Swiss had 3 pawl hubs, I have 350 boost with 54t ratchet. If it already has ratchet you should not need to buy any tools, just swap the ratchets.
@johnferraro39902 жыл бұрын
I wish I could! Unfortunately I have the 3 pawl hub.

Would you prefer the Scout above the Chameleon?
@johnferraro39902 жыл бұрын
I chose the Scout over the Chameleon because it came with better components for the price. It's hard to find a better spec'd bike for the price than the Scout.
@michaelrieser99282 жыл бұрын
I lucked out and got a new Chameleon r build MX for $2200 plus tax. Great bike, like it better than the Rsd middlechild. Not as playful, but super confident going down hill. I too have low engagement rear hub. The best route I have found is to get a nukeproof horizon brown rear wheel for $325. 102 point of engagement, and sell existing wheel to help out. Buying good hub and having it put on cost me more.
@johnferraro39902 жыл бұрын
@@michaelrieser9928 That's a good price for a Chameleon. The only reason I'm not going with the horizon wheelset is the weight. They are a little on the heavy side. I'll either upgrade to the star ratchet or maybe a wheelset from i9

can somebody do a comparison with this and a karate monkey please, I have the scout but looking to get a KM for bike packing..should I keep my Nukey for down hill?
@johnferraro39902 жыл бұрын
Send me a KM and I'll be happy to :) In all honesty, you can probably change out the tires on the Scout and have a great bike for bike packing. Either way the Nukey can stay!
