The most powerful operating steam locomotive in the world travels to Florida.
This part of the country never saw an articulated steamer, until the North Florida Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society (NRHS) brought her to Florida.
Run by the Norfolk Southern, and sponsored by the NRHS, this incredible trip from the cab, Trackside and from the train! Awesome pacing shots with a gyroscopic lens, run-bys which will send chills up your spine, and sound that will blow you out of your listening seat! Don't miss out on one of the most entertaining and fastest paced videos on 1218 yet!
1218 was retired in 1959 and sat next to Union Carbide in Charleston, West Virginia until 1964. Towed to a variety of museums for static display, she remained silent for 21 years. In 1985 Robert B. Claytor, then Chairman of Norfolk Southern helped bring her back to life.
The loco underwent a two year overhaul, and in the Spring of 1987, railroad man Robert Claytor was at the throttle as the 1218 began her new life in excursion service for the Steam Division of the Norfolk Southern.
Approx. Run Time 55 Minutes

A clip that shows perfectly one of the biggest problems with the mallett style of articulating a loco. No way to properly restrain the lateral motion of the leading unit, if you watch closely you can see the it "hunting" from side to side constantly with the piston thrusts. What a beast of a machine though and sorely missed from the operational roster....

N&W ran through my home town and as a child I loved the sound of the A's and J's with a mix of Y's. Living between the Williamson and Portsmouth divisions how I loved the main line. TODAY Greenfrog respectfully understand how I love the whistle but want to hear the locomotive as well. As a young man I operated N&W steam locomotives into film sets and little is known about that since the ads were canceled. Three trips a day a "Great Train Robbery" used N&W E class with the State Mounted Police as the robbers.. I was amazed at the training of the robbers horses as they were at the dynamics if the locomotive working hard with set stop. I am told not one copy of the 6 filming exist since then.

I remember, growin' up as a kid in Ashland, WV, how I used to see the N&W trains pass right in front of my house go up to the Ashland Coke & Coal Tipple and drop off all the coal they had on their runs. Damn, I miss them days, man😢!

@@haroldfannin9554 Yes these selfish employees do such stupid things and that is awful. The UP did make parts some improvised others contacted the original manufacture for drawings. For NS many Southern steam is in operation and the once larger N&W looks the fool when the J upgraded for only state operation ont interstate must set up the Class A along with the J funded partly by NS.

The *safety* *valve* makes a hellish noise when blowing off. I think the heater should be reminded not to generate too much steam. The locomotive could *explode* 💥. The louder the tone the closer the explosion.

At 3:06 the first lever the engineer pulls with right hand is the Johnson Bar (equivalent to a diesel reverser) for backing up and forward movement. At 3:16 after blowing the whistle, the next lever is the throttle as Chuck Allen alluded to. You can manipulate the Johnson Bar closer to “center” at speed which acts as the locomotive’s overdrive.
