Driving my 'eBay' Ferrari for the first time, will the smoke clear?

This week I finally get to take the cheapest Ferrari 308 out for a spin, will the exhaust smoke clear or will the car I bought blind at online auction throw up more problems?

Love the videos. Previously had two 308 carb GTBs and sold the last one last year. Don’t worry about the key breaking. Looks like a 328 one anyway (which is wrong for this car) 308 period correct Silica key is cheap to replace and easy to cut. Loved your DBS video aswell. I have one so you have very good taste all round sir! Now I’d like another 308! Happy tinkering over the weekend and hope you fix soon. Albeit these cars are like the Forth bridge - all part of the fun! Subscribed.

To check fuelling on missing cylinder; isolate the ignition to all plugs, crank until it's flooded, pull the plug on the missing cylinder and confirm it's wet (or not) with fuel.

Please keep making these videos. It's great to see a channel in which you talk about the subject rather than about yourself. So many channels involve the presenter referring to themselves as "we" when there's clearly only them and shouting "whassup guys" and flailing their arms arm. Your content is also something that I can relate to and aspire to - you bought an exciting car but not silly expensive and are working on it at home without daddy's money or sponsorship which most of us will never attain. Lovely car, I want one too! Hope you get it fixed soon. You could always try the teaspoon of engine oil down the plug hole and re-compression test. If the company goes up you could then try redex to unstick the rings.

If you have no redex, wd40 down the spark plug hole also works to.

Is a myth, rings don't stick . They wear out. If rings are sticking in piston grooves it's probably had a partial seizure /meltdown and closed the ring grooves on the piston and clamped the rings. If the oil improves the compression test figures it confirms piston ring blow by due to wear because the oil temporarily seals the blow by. Think of when you do a piston ring gap check and you put a ring in a bore and check the end gaps, the piston ring is always pushing outwards against the bores so how can the rings "stick"

Chuck out that cheap Chinese compression tester. I got way low on mine and make me panic my engine was weak. I bought another and that read different again. I did the same and ended up getting a Gunson branded one from my local motor factors. Got pressures bang on and matched what my local garage read later. Don't forget to do a wet check too. (My problem, admittedly on 70s British and not Italian incidentally was the vacuum advance failing)

I was only thinking this morning that I'd not seen an update! Glad the rings have sealed after a short run fella, as that must be a relief!... Such an awesome car!! I think your compression test gear must be faulty as it wouldn't run or start as easy as it does with a leaking cylinder. It's just a process of elimination now, but maybe look at the carb gaskets while you're at it? With long periods of un-use these things dry out and then fail to make a proper seal.

Oh yeah. Forgot to mention also, if it only smokes during cold starts and goes away once the engines' heated then its most certain to be valve issues. -- Right then --

For checking your manifold temperatures, I find a Black cable tie, best. Leaves a temporary Black mark on your working outlets, and obviously nothing on the cold outlet. Saves burning your fingers and wrapping your knuckles, during the escape 🙂

Carb has dirty jets, they also need to be synchronized every so often. You can spray a little carb cleaner in the one carburetor and see if it picks up.

that rotor arm, have a really close look at it and see if there are any hairline cracks in it anywhere, it is a problem I encountered but spent much time and money on leads, carb rebuild and tuning before finding out the problem was in the rotor arm, but you are quite right to go straight to the distributer and start from there before delving into the carbs.

As on your last video, I guessed it just needed a Italian tune up to clear the smoke. And I was right...About that missing sylinder. If the compression is bad, it is just because it has been washed out with fuel and do not seal after not firing. I would do the simplest thing in the world: change the plug... Or even better go from NGK BP7ES to NGK BP6ES. This makes the car less proune to fouling up plugs. And never start the car and stop it without running at least one minute. It kills the plugs. I bet the plug on one cylinder is crap. Try to swap them between the sylinders and see.

Could be bad fuel if the car wasn't running regularly before, can gum up the carbs. Clean the whole fuel system, tank included, clean carbs. New gaskets obviously. My old 380SL had a similar issue, caused because the petrol today isn't stable after some months. There is "Fuel Stabilizer" additive too stop this, available for older cars I think .... Of course doesn't help the compression part. Good luck.. Love the channel.

Do a compression test! It sounds to me like a badly burnt exhaust valve on cylinder 3 causing too low a compression for the cylinder to fire.

It's a 2 man job to do a compression test, one cranking with the throttle open while the other reads the gauge. A cylinder will not hold pressure as piston rings have gaps and a valve could be open!

The gauge should hold peak pressure till you reset it with a button on the side. Which is how I knew mine was broken..

Probably a bit obvious but try switching HT leads from a working cylinder to cylinder 3 just to see. It the problem follows the lead (so to speak) its going to be a nice easy fix. Bit worrying on the pressure - hopefully its your gauge but I think that's not massively likely. Good luck,

Re weak/inconsistent sparks: take a look at the impulse units in the distributor. The insulation on the wires goes brittle and the wires themselves can corrode and fracture within leading to a weak spark.

Tip for not burning your fingers when testing the headers for heat, when tracing a misfire, lick them, you’ll feel the sizzle if it’s hot but won’t get burned......

When it was first delivered and wouldn’t start it was spinning over very fast on the starter. That would indicate low compression somewhere. You may have a sticking valve or some such. It would be unusual to have a problem within the cylinder itself that would manifest itself in only one of eight!
