The interior looks as comfortable as a church pew in an earthquake. Those tiny windows will make it feel like being in a pillbox, and I don't really get the logic behind the lack of rear window. It might make the body a bit lighter and more rigid, but you need to add loads of tech to see out of the rear, so that cancels any weight loss. That rear grill thing looks like something you'll get in a small Lego model. As for the advert reflecting the norms of modern society - modern society has a diverse range of norms depending on location, age, class, etc. I think the 'norms' reflected here is a very narrow London arty middle-class clique. Not the sort of people who are particularly interested in buying or driving cars, let alone a Jaguar. Even if Jaguar want to find a different type of customer (which isn't a bad idea, as the caddish middle age bounder is dying out), you need to find those who want to buy cars and can afford them.

The wheelbase is disproportionately long, as though someone put a coupe body on a bus chassis. This is accentuated by the straight swage lines which give the car a flattened appearance. There is no attempt to curve the bodywork over the rear arches, something which has traditionally given Jaguars a muscular appearance. The squared cut off front gives the car an unfinished look and lacks any kind of identity. I'm not going to even bother to address the appalling interior. The element I always loved most about Jaguars of old was the originality and forward thinking. Those cars are instantly recognizable as a Jag and nothing else. This ethos disappeared in the new millennium. The cars were pretty, but faceless. Perhaps, the problem with this new concept is not that they are redefining their core values, but that they have lost sight of where they are. As a design concept, this is very interesting, but could anyone see themselves driving it on the road? When the XK120 appeared, everybody wanted to drive it. Same with the E-Type and (as much as everyone picks on it) the XJS became very popular in its lifetime. With this, I just can't see who would drive it. It is bombastic in a time when opulence is not really admired. Copy Nothing is cool, but what about Grace, Space, and Pace? Forward thinking and originality can co-exist without shouting about how wealthy you are.

In my view, the Jaguars of old were sensuous and exotic works of art in a literal sense... they could have been at home in an art or technology institute museum. The test? Anyone- man, woman, or child, could sense that an XKE was an inspired work of the ages. These hideous new cars are worse than vomit from a design standpoint.

Being cynical, I assumed that the ad was intended to stir controversy as it got people discussing the brand again. 10 years ago the ad would've been viewed as avant-garde, whilst now it's a tired trope, which is what many people have been reacting to. Cynicism aside, it had the intended effect. As they say in certain circles, there is no such thing as bad publicity. As for the design itself, it's arguably more divisive than the ad, which has been universally derided. Being a prototype, obviously it won't reach production as is, but it's certainly not a new idea. Chrysler in the 90s released a strikingly similar shaped and proportioned car with the Crossfire. Hints of the original E Type are there, along with other designs from other brands, because it's truly difficult to come up with a clean sheet design that doesn't borrow. That said, whilst they've failed to adhere to some of the buzz phrases in the ad, it all seems like they're rebranding in order to reposition themselves for a future they believe is imminent. That of the car as a mere appliance rather than a symbol. They're looking to appeal to a generation that doesn't associate a car with freedom and certainly doesn't look at brands as aspirational. I'm looking at the prototype and seeing a washing machine or air conditioner with a subscription based model for use. They're deliberately alienating their current and former customer base so they can pivot towards a new customer who will look at it like their mobile phone. I doubt it will work, since jaguar has nearly always been an aspirational brand and discarding that is a huge misstep. We'll see over the next few years how they do, but I don't hold much hope
@sagetheowlfatfeathery20838 күн бұрын
This was their Gerald Ratner moment. Calling your existing and a good proportion of potential future customers a bunch of racist bigots was not, in my opinion, a great move. Looking at where the US (one of their biggest markets) is heading politically and culturally over the next few years just emphasises the point. Jaguar, the Bud Light of car manufacturing.

Jaguar had to do something that's for sure. Many people are unhappy to see the old Jaguar go... but the reality is that they weren't buying new Jags. It is a bold car with presence imo... and as we know, the actual production car will be in this general style, but probably significantly different. It even occurred to me that maybe Jaguar would have a follow up campaign where this new aggressive car blows away the oddball teletubbies in a ballsy " We were just kidding" moment. I think if the unveiling was preceded by a better campaign, more people would have been open to liking this car... it is after all a powerful car with presence. I'm sure that a proper leaper and growler will be offered as option, that's what I would put on the car. A 1,000 hp car deserves a growler in front! If Jaguar is successful, I would bet they would bring back these badges in some future year. Hopefully too they offer a cool two door GT. I am certainly rooting for them. It does all make me appreciate my beautiful XK 5.0, as it's now a part of Jag history.
@RyneLanders8 күн бұрын
I've had 3 XKRs, one 4.2l and 2 with the 5L SC and love them. This new car is very, very different from the typical car designs and while it's not classically beautiful in the way the flowing XK lines are, it's got a stunning presence that's very brutal. I think the XKR looks better, but I think the materials and purity of design in this are really striking and I like that they're doing something that won't be a copy, won't be derivative of other things. This car is the car of the future promised in movies like iRobot, Minority Report, etc. and concept designs from the 90s. In fact it looks like a car from Cyberpunk 2077 (look up a car called the Herrera GTS and this Jaguar would fit in perfectly in the setting beside it). So, I'm excited a brand is bringing us something so retro-futuristic and different, and I'm excited it's Jaguar, though it could have easily been any other brand. I like the design overall, but I'm not smitten with it like I was with my Ferrari and XKRs. I think the tech for the pop out stuff is cool but needlessly complex (the word "extra" comes to mind) and I'm sad that Jaguar won't release more driver's cars like the XKR and F-Type.

@@RyneLanders Very much agree with you. It's funny as the lead up campaign was hardly pointing to a powerful, stunning and brutal car. When I first saw the rebranding video I thought, "Well, Bond villains won't be driving Jags anymore" ..... but a Bond villain could definitely drive this, although in blue or black not the pink.... lol. Imo, the teletubbies would not drive this car. Love my XK 5.0 ...but had passed on the R version. At over 100 more hp, I just thought the car would be out to kill me (was replacing as my sports car an MGB with like, don't laugh, 90 hp.) @lukemallory7832 look at the sales numbers. The XE, like the Cadillac ATS/CTS/CT4 line competed against the BMW 3 series / 5 series and the Mercedes CLA/A/C classes, and both of these brands' cars failed to get a fraction of the traction those did. They failed as mass-market entry-level luxury cars, and the amount of money invested in them has dragged the brand down. In the US, the XF sold between 1/7 and 1/10 the number of sales of its competitor the BMW 5 series, which tells you something. As for the flood of cheap cars on the market, that's what happens when you have an entry-level luxury product that the buyers have to stretch to afford the note on, but can't afford the maintenance on. You see the same thing in BMW with all the clapped out 1, 2, and 3 series cars; Mercedes with the CLA, A, and C class cars, etc. Going back up market with fewer sales at higher margins means they have more money per car to develop with, ensuring better fit and finish, and fewer models to manage means fewer issues in the product line. Their upper end cars like the XJL, XKR, F-Type, etc. have trended to do very well with few issues.
@Whatshisname3468 күн бұрын
It is a design study not an actual car: the idea of all of this is to gauge interest and see what works and what doesn’t. Obviously the designers have a certain amount of leeway but at the end of the design process it has to go in front of a board to be approved. I personally appreciate it. They’ve pushed some boundaries, kept some classic lines. The proportions are a bit odd but I think that’s to prepare buyers for the long bonnet on the new 4 door GT. I just really wish them well. There are some great engineers at JLR and they deserve to succeed in a world of carbon copy German nonsense.
