How does a modern Ferrari F430 compare to my classic Ferrari 308? Which should you buy? How differently do they drive? How expensive are they to run? The F430 was a seminal car for Ferrari coming for the first time with a brand new V8 engine! but will the more modern car give me the raw emotions of the older classic car?

With the F430 you'll have a greater chance of arriving at your destination, it will also be comfier, faster, and quicker, and most certainly cause less headache and money drain, but, nah, I personally would go with my heart and pick the 308 any day. Especially after having spent a lot of time and cash to make it shine again. It's a heart thing - the 308 looks iconic and just fabulous, whereas the F430 is a bit of a meh in my eyes, one of my least favorite ones in terms of style. Edit after finishing the video: I'm pleased, we think the same :)

Keep the 308, these mid-modern cars will all fall into obscurity thanks to EVs, and fair enough too. That 308 is beautiful and truly mechanical. Think of a near future when you're driving your everyday Muskmobile or equivalent; what car would you like in the garage as an antidote? And remember, speed is now academic; that 430 is dust beneath the dull chariot wheels of a model 3. Choose character. My ten cents. Love your work mate!

It doesn’t sound like the 430 is in the running. Can I suggest time to take another look at the 348? Sure, the 355 engine is better, but it certainly has that old school feel. Steering is better, manual gearbox and you can really push it without going too fast (once a weakness, is now a benefit).

Always preferred the 488 to the 458, looks-wise. I think a more interesting successor to the 308 would be the much maligned 348, which apparently has very communicative steering. I know they have an ill-handling reputation but I think the later ones were improved in that respect. Another interesting choice would be a Mondial cabriolet: the world's only open top mid-engined four seater, ever. I would be interested in finding out if removing the roof really compromises it, given the fixed roof Mondials and GT4s benefit from a longer wheelbase compared to the two-seater 308 and are considered the better-handling cars.

Speaking of paddle shifters. If it's the reaching for the shifter you're (we're) missing, it think it should be possible to mount an electronic shifter, i.e one made for PC gaming, but of the high end type, and make it communicate like the paddles do. Of course it has to be done in a fully reversible way. Wouldn't necessarily try it for the first time on a Ferrari, though...

The 430 is very reasonably priced but parts are very expensive! Unless you are Scott@Ratarossa, but Jack is very handy too. I was considering the 430 but couldn’t stomach the servicing cost. Looked at the 360 as my brother has a Stradale, but the timing belt job alone is close to $3-5K. That’s if nothing major breaks. I bought a 4C instead which is cheap as chips to service! It’s not a 430 by any stretch of the imagination but still fun and looks fantastic.

Jack, I really hope you keep Influenzo. It's the car that made the channel. And she is a beauty. Pretty sure you'd miss her if you let her go, after all you've been through with her. But from what you've said, a modern Ferrari won't be your thing. You like the feel of classic cars too much. You need a car with soul. As others have said, a 348 would be a great shout. Not crazy expensive and probably an opportunity for a series of repair videos that would hook more people into the channel and keep it growing. I don't think the 430 would provide that.

As you can see from my thumbnail, I have owned an F430 for many years, and it's a keeper. So I'm biased but offer can a few points. The steering is tyre sensitive and was always better on the original Michelins; for me Bridgestones grip more but lose some feeling. Second, the F430 had a significant update in mid-2008; in particular the F1 shift is noticeably better in the later cars than on your 2005(?) example. I personally didn't like the manual set-up and found the shift, pedal efforts and responses weren't as well harmonised as in the 360 and earlier tipos. Perhaps Ferrari didn't expect many takers; you are after all junking all the effort they put into honing the relationship of the shift with the engine, E-Diff and suspension, and 90% sold were indeed F1. Most 430s, and almost all from 2008, have ceramic brakes. The discs should last the life of the car with pad replacement every 20,000+ miles plus so they are not at all scary, and they also generate almost no brake dust. Last, your car like mine has the standard exhaust, but it sounds different. If you go for a Spider I promise there is no significant penalty in handling or performance and you will find out just how good these cars really sound! I also had a carb 308 for 12 years and loved it, but it was quite unreliable in comparison and of course prone to rust, which the F430 isn't. It also had numerous electrical issues and A/C that needed a re-gas every 9 months. On XWXs it was fun to 4-wheel drift and it did sound good. But carb 308s, all now at least 43 years old, now feel very 'classic' so you have to be ready for that.

I am in agreement about the older Ferrari motor having been a “living, breathing” thing compared to its successor. I am old so my reference is the 250 compared to the 275. The 250 motor was an event, sounding as though every internal component had been tuned by ear: a fascinating fugue of taps, clicks, whirs, burbles that ended the instant it was turned off. By comparison the 275 motor seemed muted and expressed itself through exhaust notes.

You want ultimate steering feel? Manual gearbox? Way more sophisticated chassis and handling than a 308? Trying to avoid the reliability issues of the 355 with it valve guide/exhaust header issues, and maintenance of the power steering and adjustable dampers? Try a 348. Very analog and a hoot to drive. Not a ton of power, but adequate. If you don't like the side strakes, just replace the lower door panels with ones from a 355. Biggest drawback is dropping the engine every 5 years to do the timing belt etc., but that's actually something you can do yourself.

Didn't like the prolonged warm-up-before-drive-off when cold but enjoyed driving it on the highways and byways. However, I was so worried about it getting dinged/scratched by negligent people (or haters) that I only had about 28,000 miles on it when I sold it. Our hearts may nostalgically long for yesterday's cars but a new Honda Accord would run rings around my 308. These questions are beyond my budget in all possible ways. But I, myself, would rather own a restored and still DIY-fixable, very mechanical old car with stunning, borderline toy car lines rather than a very advanced and comfortable, but more anonymous car that could end up as an even worse money pit in the long run. Because to me, a sports car would always be a Sunday afternoon experience, exploring narrow, domestic roads with low speed limits and steep fines. So for me, a small, affordable sixties roadster is more relevant than a Maranello thoroughbred. But best of luck in finding YOUR dream car.

The 308 is so gorgeous. The 430, like almost all newer cars, looks blobby and lardy in comparison even though I'm sure in most objective ways it's a better car. Plus newer cars will be more difficult to spanner yourself which for me are your best videos.

You have excellent taste, Jack, so you could go at this a different way round. Emotions are still involved. If you quasi-daily drive that car, its replacement should be the Ferrari you enjoy getting in and out of the most.

Love the 308 but if you want older and a bit different how about a 4 seater Dino.?

I have a 308GTS. If I sold it and bought a 430, every time I opened the garage I think I’d be heartbroken. The 308 is slow but so special in a way I’m not sure any modern car could deliver. And the there’s the looks….. the 430 isn’t even in the same league.

Of course the 308 is an absolute beauty design wise. I’ve driven one several times. The problem is, they are horrendously claustrophobic. It’s so cramped inside that it’s off putting. It’s a car you have to man handle. It requires a lot of muscle to move around and tiring. Great sound though, but too gutless by today’s standards. I now own a F430 Spider, 08, Rosso Corsa. It’s an absolute dream! I couldn’t be happier with it. I love everything about it, sorry, no complaints. Personally, it’s no contest.

Good luck with your search ! I think the 308 is a prettier car and still has enough performance to have fun with. The modern Ferraris are like super sports motorbikes - you can't really enjoy driving them unless you are way over the speed limit. Who seriously needs 200mph ? I would hunt down a 355 or even a 328 ... or just enjoy your 308 and maybe get another car with a different character. I look forward to the next video !

You might aim for James's Scuderia. Shame a 288GTO is way too expensive as it would be a nice step up from the 308.

I'm dreaming about air cooled Porsches. Ferraris are a bit ostentatious. I wouldn't want to get that much atttention. Great cars though. But out of those two, definitely the classic one.

@Jack, any chance you could do a test of the Giocattolo? Did any of those cars make it to the UK? Probably not that affordable if one is up for sale, but wouldn't an Alfasud Sprint with a mid-mounted Holden HSV V8 be the ultimate Influenso replacement?

The 430 would be easier to live with…just get a manual…only downside is you’d have to bin the Thomas Magnum shirts (and moustache)…I’d get a 997 Turbo or GT…

As mechanic who specializes in Europe cars (I live in Connecticut) the 308 is the best choice. The design is not only stunning from every angle, but it will be stunning 100 years from now. It’s a (comparatively) easy car to work on, and it will be easier to keep running than an overly complex newer Ferrari. It won’t set any land speed records, but it’s an extremely enjoyable car to drive. The handling is amazing, and the sound is addictive. Let’s not forget that Ferrari no longer makes it’s incredible gated manual transmission, which is a sacrilege. Part of the enjoyment of owning a Ferrari is running it through the gears and hearing that metallic “snick snick” sound as you move the beautiful lever. The newer Ferrari obviously is very fast, but they’ve lost the magic. To be honest, the 328 is a much better car than the 308: it looks almost the same, but under the skin there were vast improvements. The 328 is known as the “Toyota” of Ferrari’s because it’s actually very well made and has proven to be very reliable with proper maintenance.

Last year I was at Brands and the car park was full of Ferraris. None of the moderns got any attention from passers by. A 308 on the other hand gathered a crowd. How can you replace it with a modern? Have both perhaps, but replace it?
