@@autumn399Yes, you can chose what genre of nursing you want to work. Of course, some floors or specialities will be more difficult to get into without experience than others, but in todays climate if you live near a lot of medical systems, you’ll most likely get what you want.

As a retired L&D nurse I was one of those 9 friends who would show up out of the woodwork for the crash C-section. Always amazed me how it came together for a successful outcome. And yes, crying dads are the best!

I work as an RN/IBCLC (breastfeeding) and highly recommend it, for those who have the calling! High acuity is not for me. I recommend working mom/baby first for a solid foundation.😀 Love you Nurse Liz!!!

I would encourage new Nurses not to saddle themselves into full time employment. I think Nursing is really demanding and you can always pick up extra shifts, but it's hard to get rid of shifts. 0.75 FTE is plenty! Take time to get into it.

If you can't handle that financially, I agree because with the DANGEROUS ratios, and you need time between shifts not just to unwind, but to HOPEFULLY learn.

I had cholestesis both pregnancies and my L&D nurses were my super heroes!! They made my deliveries soooo nice and really kept me on the goal at hand which is getting this baby out healthy and happy. Both my babes were born without a hitch and were healthy. Now I’m going into nursing school and am debating between ICU and L&D. But I can say without a doubt L&D nurses are amazing!

Props to you for not needing to be in the spotlight. I appreciate you and all those in the silent services such as Cath lab, where heroism is "in the basement" and not seen by any one...but God. It keeps you humble, virtuous and you are not getting immediately rewarded by any one. I think this is good. It remains TOTAL focus on the patient who often out of it and can't see the good you're doing, the life you are saving from their doctor's errors and near misses, etc. So, thank you!

I loved Dr Midwife the most - the most authentic, human feeling, sensing humbling testimonies because it wasn't about how it makes "him" feel good. It seemed altruistic as humanly possible.

I worked in the OB ICU at a teaching hospital. My patients had sickle cell,bowel obstructions, collapsed lungs, gunshots, stabs, untreated AIDS, falling kidneys, liver problems,etc. Also, I had to help women who were having late term miscarriages or inductions because of extreme birth defects. I had to circulate during the c-sections. A stat c-section had a 10 minute window (From the time the c-section was called until the baby was out.). But, the reward came when a healthy baby was born. It was too much for me. I went back to SICU(I did much, much better with trauma.”

I’ve tried a lot of things but always go back to home health. I mostly work in the office as a care coordinator, but make visits at times too. Private duty pediatrics was extremely rewarding when I was younger and before I had to drop my son off at daycare to give one on one care to someone else’s child. Seeing the kids get stronger and come off all their meds and equipment was the best way ever to lose a job ❤

One of my brothers is a surgeon, and the other, an oncologist. I also have an aunt who worked in dermatology, and my cousin is a nurse (currently endoscopy but she's done a bunch of roles). Happy to reach out to see if anyone knows anyone who would be down to contribute to a part 2, or 3, or... This was extremely helpful, and also probably a great way for those already in the medical field have a better understanding of the different fields!

Had no idea flight nurses were absolute gods. I met one right after delivering my baby at 25 weeks. I had my 5 month OB appointment on a Tuesday and he assured me I was most definitely fine and not in labor, despite the significant amount of blood in my urine sample. The next day I came home from school, my dad took me to the ER where my OBGYN worked. The flight nurse came in and told me what was going to happen and that my baby girl was in the best of hands. She had to be life flighted to bigger hospital where they had a NICU. Thank God I’m from Houston. It was just crazy. Going on 6 years and I’m terrified to get pregnant again.

I am an informatics nurse and I highly recommend it. However, you need a good grasp on technology. Informatics are who should be bringing up new tech that will make the jobs of healthcare easier. Keep up the work. The non-healthcare worker needs to understand why they should be angry about the current state of healthcare.

I started in informatics while working ER and trained ER staff while working clinically for 13 years. It is good to understand technology although you can learn it, be trained on it if that's what you want to get into.

I loved hearing all aspects of each person's experiences! I'm a new grad who enjoyed telemetry the most during my rotations, mostly because - apart from a few codes - the stress level wasnt as high, tbh. I dont think I have the personallity for ICU/OR/ER/OB so I have a lot of respect for nurses who work on those floors. I have job interviews next week so any advice for telemetry/forensic nursing?? ^_^

Did anyone else work for a hospital that attempted to float them to other units during covid. I was told we talked to our lawyers, and you have immunity. I quit after that voice mail

ER is figuring out if the patient has something life threatening or not and if they're safe/well enough to go home or not. If they're safe enough to go home then refer to outpatient. That's obviously a really basic explanation.

You should have started working psych as an RN to get a feel for it. Plus it’ll give you pertinent experience once you do graduate and look for jobs, maybe even connections.
