Some of the coolest and nicest people I’ve met as a patient has been male nurses! I will always remember the time I had to drink a lot of fluids and my nurse at the time gave me two drinks, one with ice and one without, because he wasn’t sure which I’d prefer. He was great guy! Another time, I was really nervous for a surgery and the supposed “mean guy” was actually a sweetheart and helped me calm down. People are so quick to judge unfortunately.

Yes. Nursing is extremely toxic. I stick to night shift to avoid the majority of the drama. When I did work day shift I saw a lot of nurses bullying other nurses who they considered weak. I have a no nonsense personality so nobody messed with me much but just being around it had a negative effect on me. Been a nurse 15 years and even as a traveler I have offered to train new nurses to keep them from being bullied by their preceptors. I watched this one nurse scream at her orientee because she called a patient honey. This was her very first nursing job and she went to lunch and didn't come back after being humiliated that way. I reported the incident to the DON and told her to put the young woman with me. This hostility has got to be rooted out if nursing is to survive. Otherwise, healthcare is doomed.

I was once bullied by a day shift veteran nurse during change of shift, but I was still hustling to leave everything in order before I left. She came at me and I flipped out on her to the point that I flipped my middle finger 🖕 at her in the middle of the floor with a dozen or more witnesses. I then said, feel free to fire me now! Everyone froze and it went silent 🤫. I finished my duties, gave report. clocked out, went home, and waited for the call 📞 but no call, so I thought "should I just not return tonight?" But I didn't want to give that bitch the best of me and so I returned to work expecting to be called into the DON's office. I get off the elevator everyone looked at me I clocked in and picked up my assignment. Never heard another word, ever! The struggle is real....2024!

As a patient I've witnessed the bullying of new nurses, older nurses, nurses from other countries or with thick accents, white nurses being racist to nurses of other races, etc. Any time I see it I show my entire behind to defend them. Especially when I know the bullied nurses are wonderful to me and actually care! My mom and I both call in the supervisor, management, human resources to make SURE it stops that day! I'm not having it! These nurses have helped save my life so I'll defend the injustice with all I have!❤

The cattiness is UNREAL and at the end of the day people don't see the bigger picture is deeper than us, instead of fighting each other we need to band together and address the deep rooted issues of unsafe staffing ratios, unfair pay etc... I stood up to the bullying from my trainer. She went to mgmt & accused me of patient abuse. I was suspended & quit when called in to discuss 2wks later. Then they cry how they can't find people to work in the industry. Only a sadist would enter this field! I have no sympathy for the nurse shortage. I honestly hope the overworked, overstressed scenario goes on for these 'mean girls'.

Nursing is so toxic!! Some nurses are passive aggressive, back stabbing, manipulative and hostile. I have been an RN for over 20 years and when I first started nursing over 20 years ago the saying "nurses eat their young" is unfortunately true. I was a baby nurse and the older nurses bullied, harassed, back stabbed me and the managers ignored the bullies behavior. I prayed and had faith in God that things would change and it did. One of the bullies moved to different parts of the hospital and the other bully quit. Although, I don't work at that hospital anymore and when I changed hospitals the bullies and toxicity in nursing is as strong as ever!!! I wish the bullies would use that same energy to promote safer staffing ratio, pay increase, give us lunch breaks and lighten the workload that is expected from nurse managers.

I've been an LPN for a year in LTC, graduating in December and preparing to go into the hospital as an RN, and the level of toxicity is unreal! I'm always nice and pleasant.....the way these seasoned nurses have "attempted" to treat me is crazy! @@AccordingToTawanda I truly agree! No workplace that gives you anxiety, additional stress, depression, bullying etc, you must leave for your own personal health and mental health! No job is worth having a stroke or worse. Trust me I’ve dealt with nurses, charge nurses, nurse manager, all the way up! They all have this defensive mentality and cover for one another. I have a nurse in my family. My best friends daughter is a nurse, my youngest was in college for nursing, she was doing her CNA at a convalescent nursing home until covid hit. Since then she was following many nursing accounts to learn from. Instead most of them, were advising not to choose this path. So she’s not trying to decide what to do. Most recently sadly my Uncle had two strokes, he can’t walk, then since his diabetes has been hard to control, it shot up to 1100 and he was rushed by ambulance to the emergency. This truly took a toll on him. His normal baseline was like you & I. Now it’s very different, very confused. It’s so sad 😢.. especially not knowing wether he will be that same funny uncle at family bbq’s and holidays. While in the hospital, mind you he was hospitalized at VCMC main campus and fell over there.. then a few weeks later at this smaller campus. I had to tell the ICU nurse to please put the FALL RISK BANDS on him! She seemed agitated! I honestly don’t understand why? If you can’t do your job right because you’re so unhappy don’t be mad at me! Then he’s transferred to med surge. Not even 24 hours and has a fall. How?? Why?? When?? We received no phone call! They tried to hide it!! I’m LIVID! The only reason I knew is because upon trying to visit, they always call back.. this time they made me wait for 20 minutes, I found odd because they always said sure. No one was there visiting. I went to the room and found a SITTER Is what she referred to herself as. I was confused. Told her I would be here all day she could leave! She told me she couldn’t and was called in because he fell!! She said they didn’t allow me in because they were photographing his bruises. All over his body! He was black and blue everywhere!! Also after they said he fell on his butt???! No one was there! Yet he had a bump or knot on his head and so many black and purple bruises! Then the Dr told us, that she didn’t see his chart she was not the night Dr! They only ones who knew about the incident were asleep???! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! So no incident reported!! No phone call to any family members, yet all the nurses said the dr called! Yet the dr said NO! She waited to tell us about 1 pm at bedside!! Then I had a nurse telling me off about his blood sugar being so high, that I was a great caregiver, then the case manager yelling at him! HES BASICALLY INCOMPETENT! 😢 THE NURSE IN MY FACE!! Talking about my daughter who was never there to visit!! Blamed my uncle for falling??! How is this OK?! I’m so disgusted and angry! She’s lucky I didn’t KNOCK HER A$$ OUT!! But I had to be able to stand guard and advocate for my TIO! We are Hispanic and a very close family! I am in complete shock of what I went through! Unreal!! I appreciate you and your video!

Thank you for the video. I went to school with nurses. I decided to go for social services. Let me tell you something, the nursing profession is still 70% women and 30% men. I worked eight years in the hospital and had to come out for that particular reason. It is very terrible, especially for techs. We are treated like dogs!! It is terrible. Me personally, have gotten into it with several nurses. I told one, you got me completely messed up.. I got so bad that, my head would start hurting when it was time for me to go to work. I stopped talking to people that I worked with. If they asked me a question, automatically, I would go completely off!!!! I had to leave.. One thing I never did was join in anything, if anything, I told them that the energy you bring in my direction will be reciprocated!! I meant every word of it… Sad part is that Iam a very nice person, but when you are in a hostile environment on a regular basis, it does something to you…

You are so right. I am retired but survival strategy was changing jobs a lot. I stayed at some hospitals for 5 years and when things got too toxic I left. The first thing is giving good and safe care to patients. And if someone is trying to sabotage you, than you need to leave. There are cliques, bullying and everything that shouldn't be in this profession. There are even for profit only companies that make things worse. There is so much responsibility and work that make it almost humanly impossible to do. What still stuns me the most is that in a place filled sickness and suffering there is this mean girl high school attitude.

Thank you for making that video. I never thought nursing was going to be this toxic when I first entered the profession either. I was bullied numerous times. Bullying is a very serious problem in nursing that needs to be addressed. The bullying was done mostly by my bosses. It got so bad that I would dread going to work everyday. I suffered horrible anxiety. My chest would get tight, I would have heart palpitations and hot flashes. I also became depressed too. One my bosses called me incompetent and would humiliate me in front of other staff members. She was a true narcissistic person. It was always about having control. I struggle with self confidence because of what was done to me. I was made to feel like i was less than, like I was a nobody. Nursing is very toxic. It is time for us to start making some changes. Otherwise we are going to lose alot of good nurses.

Document accurate, document everything, yes. It’s saved me from false accusations so many times I can’t even count. Bullying, jealousy, competition, cliches, discrimination of all kind, all are rampant and destructive to your spirit and your career. There’s a lot of fear out there, we’ve worked so hard for our lisences and the fear of losing them is a tool used to manipulate and abuse us by each other and admin is the motivating factor I think.

The toxic coworker situation needs to be dealt with more seriously. Some of these people are so toxic that no one wants to work a shift with them. That means less safe ratios, earlier nurse burnout, and low unit morale that causes a revolving door of new nurses who learn to hate their coworkers and leave. This is definitely costing hospitals money, so you'd think they'd do something more about the problem.

I used to be a Respiratory Therapist and it was by far the most disgusting experience I’ve ever had. As a student, someone accused me of killing a patient I was never assigned to. RTs would sit for hours and hours in the Dept doing nothing. Then would be made when a nurse called. So many ppl died due to laziness. I was actually shown more love from nurses than my own people. Nurses had my back more than the RTs. I think it was bc I was always there and they didn’t need to call me. It made their job easier. It made my job easier. But the RTs HATED it

My sister is/was a nurse. She passed in 2010 at age 56. She could tell you some horror stories. I miss her every day. When she got bossy we’d call her Nurse Ratchet. She would get so mad. I have been a nurse for 6 years now. It is so sad this is going on (still) and seems to steam down from management putting new nurses with Preceptors that do not have the gift or ability to teach!!! I believe, oftentimes new grad nurses are paired with "seasoned" nurses that forget what it is like to be a new nurse. They have this idea that you should know nurse lingo and know things that you just have not been exposed to know yet. My experience went something like this... I was going to be on nights but my unit does a rotation of new grad nurses doing 3 weeks on day and 3 weeks on nights for their orientation. My day shift preceptor had been a nurse for about 17 years (Strike #1) and was a very heavy accented filipina who I had a hard time understanding (strike #2)!!! She told me one time to hydrate the patient and an hour later asked if I had started to NS fluids!!! For me, hydrating someone means making sure they are drinking. She got really upset with me. Let me rewind with my background so that we have an understanding of my competency. I had been a Holistic Health Practitioner for about 15 years before becoming a nurse. I had a successful business but felt a calling to Nursing. I also was a tutor for many years. So I came into nursing as an established professional in my own right. With that said, this nurse was a great nurse but extremely quick with her work and lacked the ability to "slow down" to actually precept. She acted as though I as already a nurse for many years and was just being oriented to the unit. Then the whispers between her and her squad began. Saying things such as nights will be better for you because it is slower. I have yet to meet a brand new nurse with no hospital experience catch on that quick. Usually if you were a CNA before your became a nurse and were savvy with how things worked, you most likely would have "one up" on a brand new "new grad". So then I go to nights 3 weeks later. I was paired with almost a new grad nurse herself. Filipina again. Her bedside manners were questionable and patients complained about her. I later found out that she and the preceptor that I had on day shift had a negative conversation about me (I do things slowly... I absolutely did to ensure I practiced safe nursing and that I did not make a mistake. Also, I did not chart as fast as they wanted me to because I did not copy the previous nurses assessment, I wanted to accurately do it the right way!!! So these were problems. Not taking shortcuts!!!) and she attempted, in one weeks time, to tell management negative things. Thankfully, she had the same conversation with 2 other nurses that were on night shift who happened to be black nurses and did not agree with what they were attempting to do to me!!! They THANKFULLY intervened and one of them offered to take over as my preceptor. Which turned out amazing for me because #1 she had been a nurse for about 3-4 years, #2 she had experience and passion for teaching (hence patience and did not mind me asking questions. She also did not try to make me seem ignorant). There were nurses let go after their 3 month probation period because of bullying and being paired with the wrong nurse preceptor. The bigger problem was that the (filipina) Assistant Nurse Manager was a bully herself and was close friends with these nurses and CNA's. Whatever they told her was "golden". She would call you into her office or corner you in a room on the unit to scold you, without asking for your side of the story. It is very sad. There are stories for days about what I have been through on the unit I started on and also witnessed other nurses go through. Sad to say, a lot of the bullying and picking on is from the filipina nurses. And much of what I have seen steams from prejudices, stereotypes, and racism. So sad.

As a male nursing student, I was apprehensive going into nursing. I spent the last 5 years as an EMT, most of it volunteer, and my experience with nurses has been quite varied. I can see the bullying atmosphere, and it's not at all hidden. I spoke to every male nurse I could find before making my decision to go to nursing school. The few I did find, warned me of the relentless and disruptive interoffice politics. I was cautioned on how being a male, you aren't always surrounded by ladies who really want things fair and just. And if people have a "card" to play, expect them to play it. I have been told that because I was a male, in many cases, I would be given the larger patients that required more physical care, or if they were more likely to become physically combative I would be the default nurse. Some of this parallels what I experienced in EMS. So with apprehension I move forward. But videos like these give me pause as to whether or not I am making a good decision.

@@CrazyBunniePanda Hi, Thanks for asking. It's been pretty challenging academically, but I am keeping up thankfully. When I started I flipped flopped back and forth if it was the right decision. Now I am doing some small clinical rotations and I am sure I made the right decision to stick with it. The patients were the deciding factor for me. I see how their can be problems with the interoffice politics, but I just steer clear of any drama. I am glad I didn't walk away from a really great opportunity and a chance to help others and improve my own life. Still a ways to go to finish. But I'm motivated each day to get up and go. Cheers!

The older nurses were likely bullied as young nurses themselves and endured abuse. The ones that survive it either become a hard bully or are compassionate. Sounds like if you work in medicine/nursing, especially the lowly jobs like CNA, you have to put on your “armor” and look out for yourself. Also, when people show you who they are believe them. It’s not always a bad thing if they show you. It’s the ones you can’t see coming that are the most harmful. Hopefully there will be an ally or someone who treats you well along the way.

I hear you sis. I am outside of the profession, but my dad has been in hospitals and facilities for the past few months. Hospitals are the absolute worst. Even the energy surrounding some of these nursing stations is "off". I am working at a SNF & at first these girls were nice and greeting during orientation but as soon as I hit the floor by myself they act like I do not exist, mean as fuck.. today- this girl came in for NOC shift I am suppose to give her my report , she didn’t even wanna hear me talk…. The feeling of some RN’s “in it for the money” is real!! I have nurses on orientation asking multiple questions about what percentage increase I received when I moved in the clinical ladder, what the hourly pay increase is for call shift vs OT, what is the bonus/incentive for being certified in your speciality. True story. And their base pay is $130-140k. Then, in-between tasks when there is a few minutes, they scroll on their phone instead of checking in on whether they can do anything more for the patient. These nurses are NOT in it for the love of nursing. Or the RNs who grab every call shift or OT shift they can, then show up so exhausted they don’t do a good job and are cranky towards co-workers and mean to patients when they ask for something (and complain about patients who “ask for things”) I’m a bedside RN of 15 years and notice that during the last 5 years and it is just getting worse. *some* nurses are the ones creating the reputation of “being in it for the money”

Hey Tawanda, thank you for your video. Nursing may be the most trusted profession in healthcare, however it is one of the most toxic professions as well! In my opinion a lot of the problems in nursing are because of nursing and the healthcare industry as a whole. I'm a CNA and have been in the industry for over a decade. I've seen my fair share of incompetence, unfair nursing ratios, cliques, etc. In my opinion in order to fix the issues with nursing, you have to start at the source, nursing!

It does start in nursing school where most of the instructors are bullies. Unhappy people bully others, it’s as simple as that. Most RN’s are not happy people. Why should they be? It is often a hard and depressing job. People would be astounded to know the number of nurses on antidepressants. The easiest fix for both bullying and compensation issues would be to bring more males into nursing. Nothing is really going to change until that happens. Yet, many men do not want to go into nursing because it is a female dominated profession and thus, is often toxic. It’s a vicious, perpetual cycle. Nursing “management” is usually a joke. They give little to no support to the people under them. Their lives are one long email and committee meeting and coming up with nonsense to justify their positions.

Im in school for the nursing program in college…..my mother came home angry and stressed out all the time, yelling at the top her lungs….. I can understand were some of her bad parenting stemmed from. Nurses need daily 10 minute meetings, nurse gather positive warm up/ follow up, we’re hard working nurses can but appreciated and applauded….. were concerns on the productivity can be better be addressed, and Counseling support. Hiring managers need to address ;bullying is completely unexceptable and with not be tolerated and should be met with immediate firing. Better security that will tolerate physical abuse from patient or co workers on and level….. because I’m not the one to be bullied and I will not tolerate… I don’t mind going back to pole if I have too, I will not not tolerate the toxic things thats going on in the nursing feild

You brought up excellent points. And ALL of these facts have been true in nursing for forever albeit to varying degrees according to wear you work. It happens to nurses across the board regardless of whether you are a seasoned nurse or a new nurse. The politics and toxic nursing culture at jobs is a very real thing and it leads to the mass exodus of nurses from the profession. There was a time when nurses would stay at their positions for a long time and now they are not. Nurse pay across the board is going down but the demand by employers for all nurses to have a minimum of a BSN is becoming mandatory. Nurse pay across states being different has always been a thing and it makes sense. For example Florida nurses will make a lot less than a New York, Philadelphia or California nurse because the price of living is different across the country. There is no way you can pay two nurses equally if they are from different regions and have completely different costs of living. So I see no problem there. Nurse pay across the nation though needs to increase drastically with the cost of inflation regardless of where you live and it isn't and that is wrong. Nurses need higher wages period. At the end of the day nurses all over this country need higher and more competitive nurse pay or nurses will leave nursing for more lucrative professions like IT. Less people will be applying to nursing schools because of the bullying and toxic culture on jobs which then lead to massive burn out and patients are affected as well and their care will be compromised. And this is why many nurses are going the agency route so their assignments are short and they move on. Or they go to home care where they are more like independent contractors. So what is the solution and is there a solution? Yes there is a solution to bullying, cliques and toxic culture on the job. The same way there is zero tolerance for sexual harassment, racial, gender and sexual orientation discrimination on the job these protections must apply to bullying and harassment on all levels on a job. Nurses and all employees must have education during orientation on what bullying looks like and that it won't be tolerated on the job. Just like your boss, supervisor or co worker can't force you to perform sexual favors to keep your job that protection must apply to bullying and harassment as well. It must be made clear to everyone on the job that harassment or bullying of another employee will lead to immediate termination. And the forms of bullying and harassment must be discussed during the orientation and the onboarding process. And every employee must sign off that they understand what bullying and harassment are s and that they will be terminated if it happens. There must also be a way for employees to report bullying, harassment without any blow back and their concerns must be taken seriously. There is zero tolerance for all types of discrimination but not for bullying and harassment unless you fall into a protected group and can can show you were targeted because of your race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion or age. Then why is any type of bullying allowed for any reason? Also when an employee leaves they have to have an outgoing form to fill out as to why they left. An outgoing forms filled out by a employee is a tool management can use to address issues on the jobs. Management must put these safety measures against bullying in place to increase retention of their nurses. Or they will always be understaffed and hiring new employees if they don't address the root cause of why nurses are leaving. Understaffing leads to ridiculous patient nurse ratios making it impossible for nurses to do a good job and provide excellent patient care.

I respect the hell out of senior nurses, what they have seen, and what they have to share. For the most part, I think I have been fortunate in my experiences but I definitely see what's wrong here. It's mostly burnout, lack of respect, and the $hitiest "trickle down effect" I have ever seen. Some senior nurses have shared "they worry about who will take care of them when they are elderly." Well...share the love, pass down your tips and tricks, and don't bully! We'll be there for you!!! When you get a job, don’t work on a unit where all the nurses are older and within 5-7 years of retirement. They will have seniority. They are thinking about retirement so do the least amount of work. If they are in a union, they complain (knowing they won’t get fired) so the management just gives all the hard work to the newer, younger employees. Go to a place where there is a mix. If you can “float” first, do that because that allows you to see the REAL DEAL and kick the tires.

So true! The culture in any work environment needs to be so that you don’t overlook. Every job has pros and cons. I have thoroughly enjoyed my nursing career. I went through some awful times. People never believe me when I tell them how bad it is behind the scenes. I know what you mean about the cliques, outcasting and bullying from other nurses and having yourself belittled by the charge nurse. I ended up having a huge breakdown. I'd vomit before I went to work and had my confidence shattered. I was medically retired in the end.😢

I was bullied in nursing school by clinical instructors. Not just me but several other classmates. We cried in the parking lot after we got done at night. I left because I was getting panic attacks when getting ready for clinicals in the morning. I have never ever experienced that kind of dread before or since. It was insane.

@AccordingToTawanda Thanks for the sympathy. This was in late 2016. It probably has gotten more crazy since. I remember being assigned to one floor of the hospital with several other nursing students and there were 4 nurses. We had 2 nursing computers that we could roll around and one of them had a messed up mouse and keyboard. So all of us had to share this one computer. Some of us were 1-2 hours into our clinical rotation and didn’t have certain information to do tasks because because other people were using the computer all the time. Then we worked with the instructors to pass meds and one time after I passed meds it took us 35 minutes to get a patient to the bathroom, change the bed materials, and get everything set for them to go to bed. The instructor counted that 35 minutes as part of the time it took to pass the meds and she said, “It took you 45 minutes to pass meds tonight. Things are not looking good for you.” I felt sick to my stomach because it felt like the whole experience was a made to fail, like how can you succeed in an environment like that?

@AccordingToTawanda I got a degree in biology. Haven't entered any field yet. Been having some health issues for awhile and cant work currently. Thanks for your responses. Still dealing with the effects of what I went through, it really harms the self-esteem. It's kind of nuts how before going to nursing school I worked retail at Target and had better system of support than with nursing school.

I graduated nursing school in Korea in February this year and am about to start working as a nurse in Korea. After I work for about 2-3 years, I will take the NCLEX and go to the U.S. Of course, I don't know the details of what's going on in the U.S. But I have heard time and time again that working conditions and the general public's view towards nurses is way better than those in Korea. In Korea, the nurse-to-patient ratio is soooo bad. In a ward, one nurse has to take care of about 10-12 patients, sometimes even more. And what should be the doctor's job is often pushed onto nurses because there aren't nearly enough doctors and so nurses have to fill in the gap and do the doctor's work while still getting paid a nurse's wage. And recently, the president vetoed the nursing law(don't know how it would translate into English, it's a separate set of laws for nursing to improve nurses' working conditions and clearly state what job we are and aren't supposed to do and so on) because it "causes excessive conflict between health care professionals." Every single healthcare providers besides nurses(doctors and nurse assistans, mainly) have been vehemently opposing the nursing law because they think nurses are "trying to take over their job." Come on, we just want to do what nurses should do! We don't have the time and energy to take over other professionals' jobs, nor do we even want to😭

I was told I’m my own union by some. . Yes. I confront them with facts. They don’t want to give me my vacation?? I present them with ‘PTO is a hiring perk’ as I’ve sat in on interviews and now ‘you want to withhold my vacation that I’ve earned???’ Oh hell no. When they wanted me to do more than required productivity whiled salaried ( I’m in home health STL) I tell them “ I DID NOT GO TO SCHOOL TO BE A VOLUNTEER!” That really gets their attention. I don’t respond when they come at me to do more. I let the sup talk until she says after a long pause…. Ok and hangs up. Been at same place for 36 plus years , home health dept 28 years. They know now I pull my own weight. I don’t buy into their Bs, stay in my lane. I stay under the radar, off the grid. They still find me to pull someone else’s wagon. Nope. I’ve done my assignment for today. Going home. Fire me if you can. It’s the same fight over and over. So n so can’t do this or that. I tell them I’ll go out and teach them, they won’t have that excuse next time. Oh lard! Thank you for your wonderful vid. You are on it! I’m subscribed.

I am so upset on the way to work I have developed a huge sadness....I have had younger nurses bullying me because I'm new on the floor...not a new nurse......and they Treat me bad and seem to only care about personal glory and attention...

Its terrible that we aren't taking better care of our nurses because they take care of everyone else and without them we would all be in trouble. Something needs to be done about the vicious culture in nursing

I've been working in Assisted Living for 10+ years, & you are so correct across the board. I want to stay in healthcare because I believe it's my calling - especially Memory Care- but I feel so beat down from jumping to facility to facility with the same issues. Bullying, cliques, toxic petty mgmt... Maybe forming unions and workers cooperatives is the answer. All I know is this world will always need nurses & CNAs.

This is true. Especially when you are new to the unit. Some seasoned nurses are bully. There is racism and rudeness. Instead of helping or teaching new nurses they will blame you to the mistakes. You are new to the unit. You still learning how the work flows but some expects you to know everything.
