My general rule of thumb for any skill I want to learn is to start with decent enough equipment that I'd feel bad for throwing away if I rage quit, and train with that until I'm good enough to recognize where it's deficient. Then I look at upgrading.

I still use cheaper arrows because I've noticed certain types of fletchings work better with different bows. Whodathunk that $80 would bring so much happiness? (hookers don't count)

My take for Traditional Archery.....the lower-end arrows work just fine. Without sights human error will have a much larger impact on accuracy than arrow quality.

For us yep ,won’t make a big difference . Shooters like Byron Ferguson ,at his level ,he buys 144 custom shafts to pick the best To suit his needs . We would shoot all 144 , Mr Ferguson might shoot 20 of them . I don’t shoot at aspirin to entertain people ,so I think I get his careful choices of which arrows he keeps in his quiver .

Thks for shirt out . Its a good shirt choice . Since arrows used in pole archery are chosen to fit purpose and the archer . Shooting at wood "birds" mounted on a metal pole means risk of breaking arrows is pretty high . So choices are made, compromises Accepted . Then arrows are let loose with smiles . Cheers nu .

I am totally with you! When I have started archery, I bought 24 Easton ACG arrows. These shafts are fine, but they didn’t teach me to shoot better! 😉 Nowadays I use good quality arrows from a local company and I don’t care about the extreme precision. My long term goal is to throw every arrow to the target with style, no matter which arrow or which bow. This goal needs lots of practice, but it’s fun! 😁🏹

The cheapies are just fine for that. My hunting arrows and practice arrows are Gold Tips (~$135-150 per dozen), but my backyard "messing around" arrows are Pandarus (~$30 per dozen) or similarly affordable arrows from amazon or ebay. Nothing wrong with that at all. 👍

I know too many people with huge egos that are not the best archers yet insist on buying the best equipment . A $150 complete arrow was lost by one of these people at our range recently when they didn’t change their 18m indoor sight setting on their compound before shooting 60 m outdoor. Doesn’t even shoot that well but obviously has the $1800 to spend on a dozen....... Status symbols are important to some people. I laughed.

What arrows is he using that are $150 each? Carbon Express Nano Pro xtreme with tungsten points are roughly $58 each fully built and Easton X10 with tungsten are $63. Those are arguably the top 2 most expensive builds. I'm curious about an arrow that's 2 to 2.5 times the price.

Been shooting a few years now and can confirm this advice. Best decision I made was to get basic equipment to start with, including a batch of 24 cheap, aluminium arrows which I used to practice and learn the basics of arrow maintenance. Lost nearly half of them due to breakages over the first year and a half but got to a point where the arrows had all been repaired and repaired and my groupings were getting decent but not great so I stumped up the money for a dozen x10s. First round I knew I'd made the right choice because the difference in groupings were noticeable and have used them since to keep improving on those groupings. I did have an issue where the target in my club had degraded, the arrow didn't stick and hung down and someone else, shooting the same target, hit my shaft and snapped one. At £12 an arrow I felt that! Have upgraded every aspect of my equipment since I started except my tab and arm guard and my groupings are the best they've ever been, but only after getting to a point where I wanted to see if an upgrade would improve my groupings or if I needed to work on my technique. Technique, consistency, concentration and self awareness are more important than the equipment in my opinion. Shot the bows of many other members in the club and can hit pretty well with any arrow or bow, after a few practice shots which came only after years of honing the technique.

I just ordered my first bow. It's a beginner wooden recurve on the same level as SF Optimo Plus or Samick Sage. It's affordable but still I am 15 yo and I am spending the last of my savings on archery stuff. Wich means that I decided to go with the cheap cheap versions of arrows, quiver, target and glove. So basically I ordered 6 arrows who are $2 each. And I don't feel sorry. I'm into archery for the fun of the hobby. When I regain most of my money and if I get better with time and practice, I would probably buy $10 arrows if I want. Later maybe I can even reach $50. For now, since I am shooting in the backyard at about 10 to 20 meters distance as a beginner, I am perfectly fine with what I have. Plus the fact that I do not intend to compete or go all way to a professional archer. I want just to shoot as a hobby. Your videos help me a lot. I am grateful that I found your channel. I shoot traditional, no sights, I doubt I would ever see a difference so long as they are both tuned to my bow. I just want carbon shafts that are durable (there are some that are not durable believe it or not), and accept screw in inserts and push in nocks. I will then weigh the shaft, figure out what weight I want it to be when completed (I want to shoot 8-10 gpp), choose a head weight, then start cutting a bare shaft down until it's tuned, then cut the other shafts down to match and fletch them. I recommend keeping that tuning bare shaft you used as a bare shaft so you can always come back and use it to adjust your nock point, especially important if you use a flemish twist string which have a tendency to slowly stretch moving your nock point a bit, despite twisting it back up to the proper brace height. I have found some crazy good deals on ebay for shafts during off seasons where not enough people are bidding.

I'm a fan of the Skylon carbon target arrows. Perform very well for the price and there's enough range to suit everyone's need. I bought the Radius .166" inner diameter arrows for myself & my daughter as upgrades to our original arrows that had come with our recurve kits. I've recently purchased some more Skylon's but the Paragons this time as they are .125" arrow for shooting longer distances as I'm now moving out to 50M pretty regularly. One of the top shooters in our club prefers his Paragon's over Easton ACE's.

Tried skylon frontier? And very good video. Consistency is way overlooked at our club they shy the cheapest carbon arrows since as they say if they buy say 12 arrows maybe 2-4 out of them fly a little different from the others. All midrange ish and up in my eyes. Good carbon arrows will last long and the difference from say 2-4 dollars to 5-6 dollars a arrow you can actually feel the difference skylon is good cheap and work well.

One thing else about cheap vs expensive arrow is; The cheaper arrow will have more wobble in a spinner. Although, there is the mid-range arrows $15-25.00 arrows that muddy up the waters concerning straightness. Many claim .001/.015 straightness (especially after being cut.) & .5 -1gr+/ difference in arrow weight.

I start with a low price bamboo arrow that have a very low quality. I shoot all over the place. After seeing your videos, starting to redo the vanes which make a huge impact on the accuracy. Last 2 days I tried carbon arrow. Now I regret why I spend on those bamboo arrow in the first place... Should been direct to carbon arrow... Shoot very accurate. But atleast its a learning curve. I KNOW I don't need competition grade arrows for any of my shooting. Just as well, since there is no way I can afford $70 to $100 (or more, thanks to inflation,) for one arrow. $5 an arrow is bad enough ... especially since some of my bows need a higher or lower spine than another bow, some shoot better with a heavy arrow, others a lighter arrow ... For hunting, using a compound bow or a recurve/longbow/horsebow, I want a total arrow weight of at least 10 grains per pound of draw weight. Hence I need several sets of arrows for each bow, tho I try to get by with just one or two. For my traditional bows, I try to get by with one set of wood arrows to shoot from all of them. I think I need a set of 300 or 250 spine arrows for my over 65 pound draw compound bow. The arrows I have don't shoot well at over 64 pound draw. The only "competition" shooting I do is against myself. Try to get better every time I shoot. I don't need better than .005" to .003" straightness, which is standard for call it $50 to $60 a dozen "recreational"/"practice"/hunting arrows.

have you tried vanes through a compound bow, saw a vid recently debunking the common belief that you can't shoot vanes through a trad bow. it showed that not only did vanes work fine but were much quieter than feathers.

Bet the unfletched X10 on a tuned setup, arrow matched etc would still be more accurate than those carbon arrows at 70m :-) Still a fair comment on arrows though. Personally, I use Easton ACE's and I match the point weights, weigh the shafts etc and every arrow is matched and all weight the same, the equipment is good, it's then all down to me and I can't blame anything else :-)

Arrows, the main consumable of archery. Still a re-usable item, you get many many shots out of one-hopefully. Consider a bullet- single use. Consider a compound bow high capex, low opex. Where as a rifle, high capex, high opex.

I once bought a dozen X-10’s and I had to return them back for the price of 2 dozens of Easton carbon ones 930’s. I knew what my skill level is at and I have no desire to go into X-10’s any time soon. I would rather buy cheaper downgrade below X-10’s for more practice and less competition. What about heavier bows? I'm buying my first heavier bow - 60-65lbs and I'm worried about the weight of the arrow. Everywhere online I find people recommending 10gpp or at least 8gpp to not damage the bow. There are no pre-made arrows that weight that much and crafting them yourself is expensive. Especially the fletching jig.

Don't forget that the weight also includes the insert and point. The shaft might not have sufficient gpp alone, but the bulk of the weight is in the point.

@@NUSensei still, the heaviest premade arrow I could find was 413 grains in total, with the tip, fletching, insert and nock. I asked the support and they confirmed they do not sell heavier arrows. This doesn't even reach 7gpp for a 60# bow.

If you have carbon arrows, would you still use ferr-l-tite coolflex over Insert Iron glue to glue the inserts in? The manufacturer seems to be recommending the Insert Iron, but I know you've said coolflex works. Pros and cons?

coolflex is awesome. makes it easy to do length adjustments during tuning. also, I've never lost an insert with coolflex, I have with Easton's hot melt but then I found out that Easton's stuff was primarily used for aluminium shafts and not that great for carbons.

I have shot 1250 with skylons. But it's easier to shoot 1250 with my x10s. Forgiveness. Problem is, you won't see that forgiveness until you're shooting the higher scores as any forgiveness in the better shafts are masked by the greater effects of the variation (error) in your form. Better to shoot cheaper shafts until you're at the draw weight you're going to compete at, absolutely determine the best arrow spine for that draw weight, draw length and chosen arrow length, refine your form until you're shooting big scores and then treat yourself to x10s but until then spend your money on coaching.

Just depends what level you're at. A beginner is going to mess up, miss the target, lose arrows, break arrows so there is no point getting the best possible arrows to learn with. You don't buy a ferrari to learn how to drive. You probably get a toyota yaris or something lol

What about switching from aluminum to carbon arrow? Does it beneficial in terms of accuracy?

carbons are lighter and therefor you can get faster speeds down range. Also do not have to worry about them getting bent. If you've ever tried to straighten an aluminium arrow, you'll know how frustrating it can be. forgot to mention, in regards to accuracy. no, a perfectly tuned aluminium arrow will fly just as true as a perfectly tuned carbon. but, aluminium has a tendency to bend over time with all the shots. maybe someone else pulled the arrows out at an angle and accidentally bent it ever so slightly. carbons do not care, they're either in good condition or broken (cracked carbon arrows should never be shot - always check the carbon shafts by bending them, especially if you hit something hard like a rock)

I like the Skylon Radius. 24T Carbon, .166 inner diameter, .005 straightness & 32" long. You can buy them for $100 AUD fully fletched from the factory with AAE plastiflech vanes, pins & nocks. Just need to glue the points in, once cut to length.
