@@KaeporaRaynor I have had long talks with some of the top people in botany, genetics, and agronomy on this subject - the kind of people who get published in _Cell_ and in _Evolution_ . I said the same thing. They laughed and explained that within those fields that is precisely NOT what the term means. They use the term to describe direct manipulation of the genome rather than breeding. You want to quibble? Go talk to the people who spend their lives swimming in that. They know more than you or I, and I tend to trust their professional judgement.

Honest review. Seems like the products are "good enough". The issue is that they have to be palatable to a wide range of tasters. The fact that the eggs were decent is a good sign. And as always, it tastes better if you are hungry!
@audiotyresup

If it's what is available, you can be picky and go forage wild fruits, berries, roots, fungi, leaves, moss, etc. until you get enough to survive on, including making up for all the energy spent foraging. But thankfully there's now so many of these survival food brands you can go for what your pallet likes best for your survival stock. But I'd say, if you have all these cans, boxes, and bags of stuff you have to cook, not what I'd call survival food. An MRE takes up much less space, and may have more calories by volume thane these survival foods. Only thing I seen that could beat the MRE in calories to volume was this large block of a dense nutrition mix sectioned into cubes, each cube about half the size of your fist and supposed to be, if I recall correctly, 1 days ration, or maybe half day per cube. Contemplated getting one to see if that would even taste good for an extreme rations bar.

MRE. Deadliest weapon in the American arsenal. Has killed more than any weapon since the K-Ration. I can only hope we abandoned a few million halal versions in Afghanistan. In defense of American rations all I can say is that my Dad grew up poor in the Depression, joined the Army at 17 and served during the end of WWII. He told me he actually gained significant height, muscle mass and weight on Army food and liked C-Rations. He'd never had enough to eat before. Grandma only knew how to cook tripe and other internal organs, known as offal and sweetbreads, as that is all that was available when she was growing up in Ireland, along with the occasional potato, cabbage, onion and carrot. He judged on a low standard. He was silent on K-Rations.

Except for instant ramen. That seasoning packet is crazy! But this is a good point. Any prep should include a lot of salt and pepper, and a good amount of spices. They tend to keep a long time, and with a little seasoning and spice you can make crap food taste appetizing. Having salt on hand should be a no brainer for anybody who does any prepping at all. It's necessary for life, and it makes food taste good! Plus you can use it for preserving foraged and/or game foods.

It looks like this line up was designed for a very specific type of "survival" in mind. Big cans of freeze dried food are good for stashing and long term living off the grid. As Paul mentioned, you need a lot of equipment to prepare this food, so it seems the best use will be as an emergency food bank somewhere in a cabin away from civilization. You can probably "survive" a couple of month if you prepared enough food like that.

On a lot of these "survival" meals and MRE's, the reason they are so bland, is the fact there are a lot of folk out there that have certain food allergies. These meals cut out a lot of seasonings, as well as nut derivatives, as these are the most common allergens. Plus this is suppose to be "survival" food, does it taste like crap? Yes, but you can survive on it. As far as the coffee goes, it has added protein and vitamins for the off chance that is all you have left, you can still get a bit of nutrients to keep you going.

MREs are designed to be as tasty as possible (and often are delicious depending on which one you get). They are not really a survival food and not a comparison to the foods Paul reviewed in this video because there's so many menu choices.
