Mean BMI was lowest in vegans (23.6 kg/m2) and incrementally higher in lacto-ovo vegetarians (25.7 kg/m2), pesco-vegetarians (26.3 kg/m2), semi-vegetarians (27.3 kg/m2), and nonvegetarians (28.8 kg/m2). Prevalence of type 2 diabetes increased from 2.9% in vegans to 7.6% in nonvegetarians; the prevalence was intermediate in participants consuming lacto-ovo (3.2%), pesco (4.8%), or semi-vegetarian (6.1%) diets. After adjustment for age, sex, ethnicity, education, income, physical activity, television watching, sleep habits, alcohol use, and BMI, vegans (OR 0.51 [95% CI 0.40-0.66]), lacto-ovo vegetarians (0.54 [0.49-0.60]), pesco-vegetarians (0.70 [0.61-0.80]), and semi-vegetarians (0.76 [0.65-0.90]) had a lower risk of type 2 diabetes than nonvegetarians. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2671114/ Actually when you look at it, the adventist health studies, the China study, the Oxford epic study, endless epidemiology the thinnest healthiest longest living populations actually eat lower fat higher carb diets. That's not popular to say because these populations eat little to no animal products. Besides counting calories or time restricted eating or excessive exercise, people doing intuitive eating ; the number one factor is body fat % is the CALORIC DENSITY Again that's not popular to say because animal products fall into the calorie dense and fatening category... Fruit and vegetable low calorie density generally. Next is your staple rice, corn potato, tofu, Beans, oatmeal, quinoa, etc. In the calorie dense and fatening category is oil, sugar, animal products, nuts,.. The number one way to lose weight is lower your caloric density. These populations where everyone is thin this is why.. (yes you can also eat heavy and be thin but that is not the norm) "Autopsies performed on casualties of the Korean War revealed coronary artery involvement in 77.3% of the hearts studied, and data after the Vietnam War noted the presence of atherosclerosis in 45% of casualties with severe disease in 5%, suggesting a decline in the prevalence of coronary atherosclerosis in young men." www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/073510979390050B#:~:text=Autopsies%20performed%20on%20casualties%20of,coronary%20atherosclerosis%20in%20young%20men. Even during Korea or Nam half or more of our young men had early or advances heart disease, serious plaques build up in their arteries.. My suggestion to you soldier is take this seriously.. most of the people watching this video have early or advances heart disease.. avoid oil and if you choose to eat aminal products limit that to less than 10% or 5% of calories... Acknowledge the truth to yourself.. the thinnest healthiest longest living populations eat little to no animal products.. oil and animal products is raising LDL over 70 causing plaques build up. (Yes genetics, smoking, activity level, etc also play a role) You don't want to get IMPOTENCE or make your heart disease you already have worse.. etc.. Diet is so critical for health.. spend serious effort improving your diet.. Let go of beliefs about diet and follow the weight of the evidence about what's best..

Old guy here (59) former infantry. Some of what you state is true some of what you deride is not true. Past a certain age one cannot train away fat etc and compensate for a bad diet. You are blessed to be able to do so into your 40s. I cannot. Some amazing people can. Genes or not, individuals are different. Some of us are biologically predisposed to storing energy. I swear I gain fat looking at skinny buggers eating. As for the 70s etc, yes we were fed a pack of lies based on bad research. For 50 years we've been told to go low fat... red meat bad... whole eggs bad... butter bad... All of this is the opposite of the truth. Meat is the most nutritionally dense food you can eat and that is why carnivore eating is becoming all the rage. Sugar, however, is bad and should be reduced. Despite not being able to train intensely I've been able to drop about 40 lbs by tightening up my diet - no sugar, limited starches, plenty of fat and meat.

Have you tried strength training? I would say I'm blessed by being a very active kid who played multiple sports, lifted weights, and lived outdoors. That gave me the great habits I still implement. But I've had a jacked up back for 17 years, among all the other old man grunt injuries. So am I still blessed, or do I just work hard? Yall can throw out your age all you want but I've trained many people. For every 50 YO who has excuses, I can point out a 65 YO who is jacked.

I've been carnivore for two years now. Nothing but red meat, eggs, pork, water and salt. I'm in the best shape of my life at age 50. I can train as hard as I want but if I eat ANY carbs I put on body fat. Zero carbs is the way for me. I've rucked 22 miles in a day through the mountains many times without gobbling down useless carbohydrates and sugar the whole time. In fact, I don't eat anything the whole time and have steady energy all day. Nobody needs to rely on junk food to make it through a long hike.

When I was in the Navy I worked at the Coronado anphib base, i saw what the Seal instructions eat. One of them would take a tray, no plates, and just fill that tray with no less than every single thing from the salald bar, and i mean everything, tuna, bacon bits, croutons, big scoop of every vegetable. To date the bigest salad I've ever seen a human eat.

Old guy here, 61, former Army Sgt., combat arms but POG for sure. I'd been a backpacker for years before joining the Army so living outdoors, wearing boots and carrying a pack were nothing to me. Physique I think is partly genetics, I ate and drank like a pig for decades, never gained a pound. Got out of the Army an extremely fit 26 year old at 130 pounds. Skinny as a rail but no fat. I made it to almost 45 and it's like the warranty expired, lots of things went wrong. I'm still active, like to backpack and camp, long distance bike rides but I struggle to keep the weight down. Getting old sucks! Training with weight is dead on in my opinion but since I destroyed my rotator cuff I have to be careful with that arm. Love your stuff!

People need to understand that ya got to eat like you're fueling a machine. Roman warriors - especially gladiators - ate a lot of barley. Good grains, steamed veggies, and complex carbs. I knew SEALs who would "carb up" immediately before a mission. Shitloads of pasta! When I went on really REALLY long hikes & bike rides, I'd pack a ton of granola bars. And I never got fat from exercising.

Roman gladiators were slaves, and generally fairly young. They didn't live to grow old in the gladiatorial trade. So, they ate everything they could that was cheap and that was grains in the main, because without factory farming and animal breeds adapted for factory farming meat is expensive, and fat is very expensive indeed.

Well yeah, if your maintenance/BMR is 2500-2700 calories and you burn an excess of 1200-1500 calories, you're gonna stay lean on a 4000 calorie diet no matter the macro breakdown. All dieting is redundant if you don't at least rudimentarily track your caloric intake.

You've missed the trend. It's all about carnivore diet these days. Just beef and a lot of saturated fat. Obviously you can get away with a bunch of carbs because of your active lifestyle. As long as you dont have a chronic surplus and start getting fat, you dont develop metabolic syndrome and all sorts of obvious illnesses caused by insuline. Being lean doesnt necessarily mean no chronic inflammation, visceral fat, higher risk of stroke due to cholesterol patches in blood-vessels, higher risk of Alzheimer down the road etc. I'm trying to eat more protein and good fat in the evening. Carbs only during the day. No big deal. No keto diet except some intermittent fasting when I dont move much. Olive oil instead of refined seed oils. Sunflower seeds instead of fried junk food. Buckwheat instead of bread full of gluten and glyphosate they use to dry the wheat before harvest. Small changes can go a long way

I recently re-read "American Psycho", a book where the protagonist is supposedly a health-Nazi in the late 80's. He details his breakfast routine at one point and talks about eating a bran muffin with margarine and washing it down with orange juice and soy milk. I'm old enough to remember when people (who were fat and, oddly, could never lose weight...) thought that was a healthy diet! Now people eat steak and eggs and wash it down with whisky for fitness.

Just remember all advice is not good advice just because it comes from someone you respect. Here are some things to thing about when it comes to sugar. Increases Risk of Obesity: Consuming too much sugar, especially in sugary drinks, can contribute to weight gain due to its high calorie content without providing any satiety (fullness). Raises Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: High sugar intake can lead to insulin resistance, a condition where cells stop responding to insulin properly, increasing blood sugar levels and the risk of diabetes. Can Cause Tooth Decay: Sugar feeds bacteria in your mouth, which can erode dental enamel and lead to cavities. May Increase Heart Disease Risk: Studies suggest that high sugar diets can raise blood pressure and blood triglycerides, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Linked to Acne: Diets high in refined sugars can increase androgen secretion, oil production, and inflammation, potentially causing or worsening acne. Increases Cellular Aging: Excessive sugar intake can increase the rate of telomere shortening, thus accelerating the aging process. Can Lead to Fatty Liver: A diet high in fructose, a type of sugar, can overload the liver, forcing it to convert fructose into fat. This can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. May Cause Cognitive Decline: High sugar consumption has been linked to inflammation, oxidative stress, and poor insulin regulation, which could potentially impair brain function and worsen conditions like Alzheimer's disease. Can Lead to Addiction-like Symptoms: Sugar can trigger the release of dopamine, the "feel-good" chemical in the brain, similar to addictive drugs, which may lead to cravings and loss of control over consumption. Contributes to Nutritional Deficiencies: Eating too many sugary foods can crowd out more nutritious foods in your diet, potentially leading to deficiencies in essential nutrients. Triggers Inflammatory Responses: Sugar stimulates the production of free fatty acids in the liver. When the body digests these fats, the resulting compounds can trigger inflammatory processes.

Man, I've been stuffing my face with upwards of 3000+ calories per day since December of last year, it was the only way I was able to support having 2 a days (weightroom and swimming/climbing on top of work) for 5-6 days a week, ballooned up from ~200lbs to ~215lbs while my waist gained only ~1 inch on circumference (I use the navy BMI calculator), not all of it was lean muscle but I'm sure a good majority of it was muscle That being said, it wasn't sustainable and when I started having almost weeks of poor performance in the weight room I instead opted to "track calories", I still eat what I want but I just eat slightly less and have been in upwards of a 500 calorie deficit Lets me dial back the training to 2-3 weightroom sessions per week, filling up the rest with whatever other activities I enjoy

This whole nutrition/dieting thing is at its base actually quite simple: Normally I work in Metric so I´ll see if I can make a mix of Metric and Imperial work. A 220 lbs. man - 110 kg - is a big guy of around 5.9 - 6.3 feet - 180 - 190 cm. - with a big frame and given he´s not fat he´ll be clocking in around 17-20 % bodyfat for a non professionally cut bodybuilder but big strong lean dude ( think Jack Reacher...) When straining your musculature you need app. 1 gram of protein pr. pound bodyweight - so the guy in our example will need some 220g of protein on a daily basis to rebuild himself after hard work. ( Notice I´m not saying the gym - your body could care less if youré lugging barbells or buckets of sand and stone about - it´s all resistance). 1g of protein = 4 calories / 1g of carbohydrate = 4 calories / 1g of fat = 9 calories! This is important! Fat contains MORE than double the amount of calories than that of both protein and carbohyrdrates. If working out three times a week and going about your normal daily life ( sitting at your desk, on your couch, in your car, on the porch, in front of your pc - both at home and at work is all you do you need no more than maintenance calories for what essentially is a sedentary lifestyle with a distribution of 40-40-20 % of protein, carbs. and healty fats ( oils, nuts etc.) ,- ie. 220x4=880 cal. of protein, 880 cal. of carbs and 110g of of fats at 990 calories (40-40-20) giving you a total of 2.750 calories of daily intake in healty distribution. If you are more active that this ( running up and down hills and mountainsides with your AR15/Ak74 in hand you need more calories than this if you don´t want to lose weight! This is why people lower the caloric intake when trying to lose weight without losing muscle mass. Keep the protein at it´s max at 220g a day - you don´t need more to rebuild yourself,- and then carb up for sustained energy when out and about ( you won´t gain weight cause you need the energy for your activity) or carb and fat down for weight loss,- ie. less than 220g of carbs and less than 110 grams of fats a day,- and you´ll automatically lose fat,- even when out and running about,- even though your stuffing yourself with carbs. Wrap your head around it and you´ll dial in your nutrition regardless of age and physical condition,- you can always work on yourself to better yourself,- and there is always room for improvement.

Food for thought... male vs. female dietary needs when training to be an athlete/soldier. Over the years training soldiers, I saw most recruits entering the service suffering from lack of muscle mass attributed to chronic malnutrition. For the men, this means regular feeding, lots of protien to build muscle mass, and teaching the men what an actual balanced diet looks like. For the women, same, plus...these women were suffering from brittle bones caused by long-term difficiencies of milk/calcium. This resulted in quite a few broken hips. (I know, we all laughed at first. Then we realized that it was real. And common) So when training frontload a nutritious meal first... then eat all the junk you want. Workout, and repeat per meal. For the ladies, add as much calcium and protein as you can. And be certain to limit high impact or heavy weight training until you have spent months reversing any difficiencies. Hope that helps. Sucks to lose a good soldier to such a painful injury or even simple inability because they simply never developed the frame or musclature needed to do the job. Best of luck, Phil

Metabolism "slows down" (degrades) due to the overconsumption of polyunsaturated fats (PUFA's) primarily from seed oils. Exercise can also preserve one's metabolic health. Carbs are a tool. Dieting is not a waste of time, especially if you are living more sedentary; you just have to understand how the relationship between the body & macros work. High fat low carb = lose weight. High carb low fat = lose weight. High carb high fat = gain weight (insulin is also called the "fat storage hormone" for a reason. Throw enough exercise on top of high fat / high carb you'll be fine. Many of us will realize soon that being (more) sedentary might actually be necessary to preserve energy when the lights go out. In other words, don't exercise too much when you don't have to, and make sure there is a caloric return to it all otherwise it could be a complete a waste & decrease your lifespan. Many people will also realize that their carnivore diets will be near impossible to maintain as animal agriculture is attacked from every angle. They will also realize that carbs are going to be necessary for increasing body fat (for survival), maintaining electrolytes (without access to exogenous ones purchased at the store) & simple energy as sourcing fat will be difficult.

i dont say that I am right or something, but according to my experience I was stupid enough to brainwash my self to get into vegan diet. so after 3 ish months of being vegan I lost mostly my muscle instead of fat, I was not able to walk upstairs, i felt fatigue all the time in my body, also when I was about to stand up i used to feel dizziness and blur motion vission. and believe me thaylt time I ate "super" vegan foods , supplements and shit...i was angry and full of stress... after that I decided to eat only meat for one month like blue stakes all the time. so I managed to heal my body and guts. also I lost some fat. however it's still not optimal if you live an active life. I felt out off gas when I did sports. now I eat mostly steaks with eggs mixing avocado, some salads and healthy carbs like sweet potatoes in between. healthy carbs ain't bad for energy. and when I want sugar i eat peanut butter with yougurt or honey. i found this diet is the most optimal for me. i do some multi vitamins as well. what else I can say, it was a trully amazing jorney figuring out what's works the best for me.

You could be wrong here are some things to consider about sugar.

I'm 53 and I eat lots of protein and fats but once a day. I can eat over three or four hour time block but not even two regular meals a day without indigestion. I still move weight but slowly. Slow movement means you can actually lift something without jerking it to get momentum. So, much less tearing of connective tissue and muscles and I get to eat until I'm sated. But I'm not telling anyone my pronouns yet.

Eat meat and fat. It's about nutrition, not calories. Your brain is over 60% fat and your nerves are sheathed in cholesterol. Also, testosterone is made from cholesterol. You have to eat to burn fat, not eat to get fat.

If you want to know what puts on fat weight, ask a pig farmer and he'll tell you: lots of carbohydrates. Pigs are very like humans metabolically and in terms of tastes; everything we like pigs like, excepting chilli hot flavours; pigs can also stomach much more bitter things than humans but are otherwise very similar. Carbohydrates put fat weight onto pigs and humans; protein doesn't and nor does fat.

Well the science is there saying high sugar high meat high salt intake diets shorten life spans so that's not really a fad that's come back into fashion or something. The top 10 causes of death can be mitigated by limiting processed foods in a persons diet and eating healthier. You might be in shape and eating a lot of junk now but life span is still going to be shortened and chances of getting cancer are higher. Each to their own of course, live your best life, I just wanted to point out there is a fair amount of research on whole foods vs high processed foods now.

Is it GOOD research or 'junk' research? There seems to be a lot of debate in the science community (Im not a scientist, nor a science nerd; just trying to make informed decisions) on this as of late. the nuance is beyond the scope of the average person.

@@inconnu4961 Yeah you raise a really good point, food science is really hit and miss, huge amounts of money and entire industries are on the line so there is all kinds of shenanigans with who funds the studies and how they run them. A lot of studies are done to intentionally muddy the waters and make it hard to see what to do, and its only going to get worse now its exposed that a lot of new papers have been retracted because they were written by AI Still there is enough significant testing on high sugar, salt and meat to show that lower amounts lowers all cause mortality (top causes of death) so everything in moderation and try to eat whole foods what ever you decide those to be, plants, grains, no grains, meat, no meat, whatever. Just try to get it unprocessed in its natural form and you will be doing a lot to avoid the major health problems I am just a random dude on the internet though who's opinion is based on studies I have read, not telling anyone what to do

@@hansblitz7770nobody actually eats 3,000 calories of donuts that shits not even a good argument anymore. 3000 calories of two donuts for breakfast, lean meat veggies for lunch burger and fries for dinner for example will work just fine if you’re hydrating and exercising preferably with resistance training. You don’t have to go carnivore or keto, carbs are the body’s preferred fuel source. Stop it.

You can eat carbs, or have because of price, but you are supposed to eat meat and animal fats and that's it. How much you can get away with depends on a lot of things. The trying and not working does't hold up. Some people are way quicker, but it doesn't take a day or two. It took me 3-4 years, 1000 days+, to get used to it. Never felt better. Do I want carbs? No. I eat. shrimp, scallops, whale, cod, reindeer and make my own bernaise. Wnat to know why, check out Bart Kay, right here on youtube.

Consume nothing but beer and Twinkies for an extended amount of time and tell me diet doesn't matter. You can be as active as you want, but if the food you consume doesn't have the proper nutrients then you're going to have problems when your muscles are starved of protein and your mitochondria are starved of cholesterol and insulin runs rampant through your blood. There's a reason peoples' health improves when they fix their diets. Do you think people get diabetes because they eat proper nutritious food? Nope, but they can reverse it with a proper diet. Read up on how your endocrine system works and you'll understand.

My metabolism took a shit on me when I was 10 years old. I'm a grumpy old guy and I agree with you on most of this. I have a voracious appetite when I'm doing a lot of physical activity. It's a complete 180, when I am sitting on my ass. I think exercise is good for building up your breathing capacity and making the heart do less work. A fat f'k like me needs to do cardio first, then try and put some muscle on. The whole idea that fats, carbs and sugar killing you is BS. Lack of physical activity is the killer IMHO. I'm cutting back on the food I'm eating because I am spending most of my doing school assignments. The stomach does shrink on its own. Calorie restriction is good for sedentary people, and not so good for people who are extremely active. I've done both in the past. Calorie restriction and being extremely don't really go well together as far as I am concerned. You'll be worn the F' out tired from it. I'm not saying eat like a pig, but make sure you're putting enough fuel into your body when being extremely active.
