OK let's balance things out here, lectins can have beneficial effects but they can harm you as well. I have noticeably reduced my symptoms of GERD by pressure cooking my beans and rice ( a daily treat for me) I did not cut out my healthy whole foods just prepared them in a way that further reduces the lectin content and it really helps. My mom's side of the family and all of us kids have food sensitivity around certain lectins mostly gluten or tomatoes. Not all people have the digestive enzymes to break down all types of lectins and too many of them in your gut can and will create nasty issues.

Yeah Dr. Gregor's talk was a little confusing. His first point was that you need to soak and cook beans to remove the lectins, but then went on to suggest they might be healthy - presumably in amounts much less than in raw beans, though.

I was the kid who was always car sick, be it from donuts after church, or pizza at shakey’s with my five siblings. Then I was hospitalized at five and fed intravenously because I couldn’t hold anything down. I’ve been vegan for over 30 years. But to this day, I can’t tolerate beans unless they’re sprouted. (I.e. soaked 24 hrs then given a few more days to grow tails.). My favorite are sprouted lintels. The same goes for seeds including flax. They have to be soaked or I experience autoimmune symptoms. Soaked and boiled beans hurt my stomach and unsoaked seeds cause arthritis in my right index finger (i know, weird). I have to sprout grains as well. Regular oat meals is out of the question. My daughter also vegan has all the exact same issues. I wonder if sprouting makes them alkaline. I’d love to know.

After sprouting the seeds/beans do you cook them/ eat them raw, or both? Sprouting is amazing - basically imitating the rain, which helps the seed to become a whole plant.

That's interesting - so even if you soak them for 24 hours or sprout them longer and then cook them, they cause problems? I routinely soak beans for 24 hours (longer than that - if I'm not ready to cook 'em, I rinse them, ring out a dish towel, strain the beans, dump them in a bowl on top of the dish towel, then pick up the dish towel full of beans, and put that in the strainer to sprout them with some air and some water around them. I also like to cook 'em a long time, till they're very soft. Glad you figured out what you can eat.

For lectins and anti-nutrients in general, I think prevention is the best thing and the easiest/simplest thing for most, less dietary restrictions. I take stuff that is great for a lot of things really, but combating leaky gut and gut inflammation a large part of it, and anything great for a healthy gut microbiome. I eat as clean as I can but toxins are unavoidable, I love intermittent fasting for a lot of reasons including that, Mega Hydrate and raw high-altitude shilajit I think are great for that in the morning. I think it helps to give digestion a break, let your body cannibalize the weak cells, then when you eat replace them with healthier cells instead of always being in rebuild mode and digesting. Every morning a tablespoon of C8 MCT oil, half tablespoon of matcha green tea, mucuna pruriens extract, Hyperion Herbs he shou wu, Ridgecrest Herbals Adrenal Fatigue Fighter(great formula and value), Mega Hydrate, and shilajit(and lately kratom lol). Wait half an hour, then Ancestral Supplements' bone marrow, liver/brain, and beef organs, teaspoon of ghee, half tablespoon of lecithin, beet juice powder, Jing Herbs Great Adaptor and Rehmannia 6, and Valle Sol Organix Mushroom Magic. And because intermittent fasting is so good for raising brain protein BDNF, Kishr blueberry hibiscus coffee fruit tea. I know that sounds complicated and expensive, but doesn't take a lot of time in the morning, much quicker and easier than eating/preparing breakfast actually. 'Lunch' is much simpler and cheaper, just MCT oil, ghee, lecithin, fermented skate liver oil, and collagen. Probably around $12 up to then, but I think it's so worth it, by the end of the day close to $30 between both food and supplements including CBD oil which is spendy but amazing stuff. I used to spend half that just on smoking and drinking lol, as much if you include money spent on energy drinks, candy bars, and gas station pizza. And I've spent a third that a day on kratom for awhile. Kratom addiction is a big part of the reason for a lot of the herbal stuff, I'll cycle a lot of that on and off but most likely will stick with all or most of them maybe with reduced maintenance doses. During an 8 hour window for actual meals, one main meal and two smaller half meals. Being almost 33 and 140 lbs probably 12-14% body fat, I'd like to gain us much lean mass as I can too, this diet should really help that a lot was favoring kratom over food too much before, dropped 15 lbs or so. It's giving me the energy for both a morning and mid afternoon - late evening job too, was doing just the one before, the morning one pays for it and I'll get a raise and free insurance with dental and vision soon. If it helps give me energy for that and then some, I'll be pretty damn happy because so many people say they'd do anything for that, but not really lol. It definitely takes some research, time/money, and self-discipline, not for everyone. But if anything it'll greatly improve my enjoyment in life, is already. My diet is nut and grain free too, dairy free except ghee. Sprouted quinoa bread with Really Raw honey(never heated or strained, most 'raw' honey ism if it says unfiltered it's strained and must be heated then) and Go Raw sprouted granola/seeds. Hemp protein, things like that if I'm gonna get serious about diet I'm getting serious lol. It's the only way I like it and stick with it, I don't even want things like donuts then after awhile.

Ron H well, I think what our ancestors ate for most of humanity does influence what we should or shouldn't be eating, but I don't necessarily mean people should only do things how they did. Just realize that in general, modern life is getting too far removed from it. Our ancestors didn't have blue-light blocking glasses but they had no need for them, we do. Wearing them after sunset helps simulate the effect of natural sunset even if you use your PC, which is good for circadian rhythm.

Oat milk (24oz) 2 scoops of mass gainer protein powder. 1 organic banana, 1 cup organic frozen strawberries, 1 cup frozen blueberries, half a cup frozen mango organic, 1 scoop of hemp protein powder, 1 scoop of plant powder, 1 scoop of Spirulina powder, 5grams of creatine powder, half a tea spoon of lions main organic powder which is “hand picked to make the best possible extract” only from the mushroom body (no mycelium), half a tea spoon of organic Cordyceps powder (from the same company as the lions mane so same quality), and I think a table spoon of MCT oil but now I don’t measure it anymore just squirt some in. Then I add a cup of ice to chill everything out keeps it cold the whole day. Then for dinner I eat whatever I feel like.

It’s some kind of chemical reaction to the Protein in the beans that causes gas according to some research I did years ago ... however, I believe there is more to it than that... like the fiber or other nutrients or components that might be clearing out toxins, possibly bad bacteria or parasites, that may contribute to gas... this is my theory, for lack of a better way of putting it... I did find a claim, years ago, that the death of parasites can cause gas... but, I tried to research that again recently and can’t find anything about that specifically now... I don’t have any real answer, just a few blips of info I have come across over the years... have you found any answers since you posted this?

It's all about your microbiome and the fiber in beans. According to Dr. Thomas Campbell: "Fiber is food for bacteria in your gut, particularly your large intestine. In a very simplistic way, when you first change your diet, you may not have the optimal bacterial community adapted to your new diet. And the bacteria you do have to ferment fiber may be producing gas in amounts that is new to your gastrointestinal system and may cause bloating, discomfort, and gassiness. This does usually get better as your bacterial community changes. In my experience, this may take a few weeks, though this is highly variable. We certainly have much to learn about this process." In this study www.researchgate.net/publication/229207033_Effect_of_microwave_and_conventional_cooking_on_insoluble_dietary_fibre_components_of_vegetables , they found that pressure cooking caused reductions in NDF (22.6-38.8%), ADF (18.1-33.6%), cellulose (24.4-43.8%) and hemicellulose (31.3-47.4%). So pressure cooking reduces the amount of fiber you get from beans and thus reduces gas and bloating. Reducing fiber is NOT something you want to do so you should just boil your beans and deal with the gas by slowly increasing the amount of fiber you consume.

I think being soaked and cooked thoroughly is important. Pressure cooking expedites that. You might also have to get used to eating them, but in your case it sounds like you're fine as long as they're pressure cooked. Not sure why, but soaking and cooking seem to generally be agreed on as important.

Reverend Eslam "Refried" beans don't really have to be fried. I just soak for a few hours, boil them until tender with some dried chilis ( a smoky chipotle), some toasted cumin, and a carrot. Sautė the onions in a teeny bit of oil and add towards the later part of cooking. Black beans are more nutritious than pinto though, so I use a combination of the two. I wouldn't eat beans with lard or lots of oil though. If you buy canned "refried" beans, get the fat-free vegetarian kind.

Thanks for the tips, Senora, but I normally procure my burritos from Taco Bell, where the beans are very mushy and was curious as to whether such beans retained any nutrition, considering how overcooked they are. Unfortunately, someone has stolen my stove so I can only use a microwave oven to boil beans, which is very taxing on the oven (I plan to eventually get a pressure cooker when I can afford one and use it on my induction cooker).

@amdenis
@amdenis 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, Dr. Greger too often makes sweeping generalizations and misquotes others, while ignoring entire groups of people who get sick if they follow his advice. You need to take the person/patient/symptomatology/condition and related context into account. As someone with Lupus, I get horrible flare-ups if I eat much lectins or phytates, which is something that has been known for years related to lectins, phytates and autoimmune conditions of many types. In fact, I am just recovering from one from about 10 days ago, when I ate a 12 hour soaked and then normally cooked bean salad and chili. The people I went with happened to be big fans of Dr. Greger; but like many, neither they nor obviously the restaurant (The Chocolate Tree organic restaurant in Sedona, AZ), were fully aware pf the dangers, nor that you do not have to get gas from beans (or risk inflammatory reactions, which many get from certain lectins and phytates). However, you do have to discount a lot of what Dr. Greger says on the subject. I do not have that problem if I eat 24 hour soaked and pressure cooked beans, as Dr. Gundry recommends. However, many will just get gas snd gas pains from eating beans the way Dr. Greger recommends. Interesting though that they do not have those problems with beans if cooked and soaked the way Dr. Gundry and others recommend. There are many different types of lectins and phytates, and like MSG, you should not just lump them all together like Dr. Greger sometimes does.
@AwareLife
@AwareLife 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting. There are many lectins of many different types, some of them quite deadly. Ricin is one. Like fats it seems we need to get more specific than just use a general label. The lectins in wheat especially are problematical to many, including me, although pasta is fine, because it removes most of them. But whole grain bread, even normal bread, and other wheat based goodies gives me inflammation and other problems when I eat more than a little. And I love baking bread. :( Wheat lectins are not removed well from basic bread. It's mainly in the husk and fibre. The WGA in it is quite a problem for the human gut often and gluten is a lectin that causes many problems. We need more specifics with this. We are not naturally grain eaters in bulk anyway. But good video because it shows it's more complex than just ban all lectins. You couldn't really anyway. But we may need to be discriminating against some bad ones it seems. Beans properly prepared are very valuable, from research. Vegetables, vegetables, vegetables, always the best!

I fries my black soy beans (ie, black beans that has green kernels inside the husk found only in Chinese grocery stores) with a bit of water to cover them with celtic sea salt in a fry pan until they kind of crack a bit and they makes an addictive, crunchy snack (ie, if you don't have any fake teeth, because they're harder to crunch into than a typical almond nut but worth the crunch). I eat them all the time during movie time, and my dogs love them as a snack as well. A good movie can't go without them. I don't feel anything bad, nor does my dogs. They're far more healthier than salted peanuts IMO. It gives you big, easy-flowing poops and very detoxifying. OK, sorry, too much info ;) But may be that's why researchers found them helpful for colon cancer prevention. I don't care what they do, lectins or not; I'm just addicted to them, especially with a good movie to go with; and they makes me and my dogs healthy and happy. Beats pop corns a million times over.

As far as I know, raw peanuts and cashew nuts are not digestible. Here in India both are normally eaten roasted or fried, however, in the western part of India peanuts are sometimes cooked like beans. Boiled peanuts in the shell are also sold has a snack. And in Goa where cashews grow some people cook them when fresh though the majority are dry roasted or fried. Of course one should eat these nuts only lightly dry roasted or boiled, to guard against AGEs. I have all my other nuts raw, and very lightly roasted cashews are easily available ('steam roasted' although that sounds oxymoronic) but peanuts vary, sometimes (deliciously!) rather well roasted. I'm thinking to start having peanuts boiled instead of roasted. Great to read this about lectins. I recall your information on phytates too. I bought your book 'How not to die' when it came out, 2016 I think and have shared its title etc. on whatsaap and facebook. Great to see your videos, thank you and my high regards, and good wishes.

It is amazing how many people conclude that avoiding plant foods is advisable. You need to look at the big picture. The advintages of plant foods that contain lectins far outweigh the dangers, when part of a largely whole food plant based diet.

I'm less worried about lectins than I am about oxalates, especially now after having my first kidney stone. I don't know for sure that the oxalates in my vegan diet caused it, but I've been cutting back on almonds, spinach and soy none the less. Also not at all happy that buckwheat groats seem to have the highest oxalate content of any grain!

Cooking foods reduces oxalates. I'm wondering if the oxalates in certain foods keep us from absorbing too much calcium. It's come out that the body stows calcium besides bones if it gets too much.
@-johnny-deep-
@-johnny-deep- 2 жыл бұрын
@@lindapitchford4941 Yes, it is well known that calcium binds with oxalate in the gut, which is why getting enough calcium in your diet will decrease the kidney stone risk from oxalate. And if calcium is bound to oxalate in this way, it can't be absorbed by the body.

My gosh, where do we begin...the horrors...All that land had to be cleared, animals run off, natural plants cut down, fuel burned in the process of grading; graded land has higher runoff typically with agricultural pesticides and fertilizers, no wild animals left, the produce requires yet more ICE equipment to harvest, pack, and ship it, and most people buy food on credit supporting the central bank system.
