I have two friends that are morbidly obese. Both have had baritric surgery, lost a lot of weight initially, then gained it all back. The one area their doctors have largely ignored IMO, is the emotional factor. Whether its drugs, alcohol, smoking, food, or an action like gambling, watching porn, etc., these people are simply self medicating, and few in healthcare even try to address that aspect of the disease.
@OswaldDigestiveClinic3 жыл бұрын
YES, 100%. Obesity in many cases IS a symptom of emotional struggles. Thanks for leaving this comment.
@Joseph1NJ3 жыл бұрын
@@OswaldDigestiveClinic that's the part few get, that obesity is not the disease, rather a symptom, very much like diabetes is usually a symptom of a metabolic disorder. Therefore not unlike many shortcomings in medicine, we treat the symptoms, not the cause.

A comment going along with what you said about obese activists who are trying to normalize it: Having a 300 lb woman on the cover of Sports Illustrated in a bikini does not help Americans get healthier. It used to be considered chic and sophisticated to smoke cigarettes and it took a long time to counter that perception. Now we're doing the same thing with being obese as something to glory in. The morbidly obese people who are trying to glamorize their lifestyles will, unfortunately, have the same poor outcomes that cigarette smokers have.

Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing protected bike lanes and trails. Ride to work, school or for fun. Bicycles make life better. Speak up for bike lanes and trails in your community.
@66810963 жыл бұрын
Walking or running is better. Bicycling is not a natural motion. Serious bike injuries are common from head trauma to death. If you're too far away to walk the entire distance then get off public transportation at an earlier stop.
@dragoncat58363 жыл бұрын
@6681096 1. Not everywhere has public transportation, or has it in the places/times you need it. 2. Most public transportation options still use fossil fuels. 3. Public transportation costs money. Bicycling costs can be under $75/year. I've cycle commuted for almost two decades now and that's my average spend for tubes, brake pads and other maintenance items. That's less than the cost of a bus pass in many cities. Use common sense to avoid accidents, wear a helmet, use lights, and obey traffic controls. Injuries are a lot less likely in places that have bike lanes and traffic at lower speeds, so route planning also matters. What it really comes down to though, is that people should do whatever type of exercise they're most likely to stick with and most enjoy. Bicycle scaremongering is not helpful.
@sparkythomas63543 жыл бұрын
Hey now, let's not go proposing common sense/low cost solutions to a problem! That won't get you anywhere in 2021, where every problem needs to be tainted with politics and solutions carry trillion dollar price tags. In Singapore - a country with a low-cost mixed model universal health care system - overweight children are prescribed more recess and physical activity. It's not always as simple as calories in/calories out, but that equation will fix most people.

I wish people would stop using shame regarding weight and lifestyle. It may work for some dudes like me, but I see the toll it takes on others, especially women. Overweight people carry "their sins" on their body, and even if they eat healthfully and exercise, a rando on the street is always going to judge them for their appearance even as they are losing the weight. It's complex and doesn't happen overnight, and at every turn, people are trying to get you to "eat normal." My coworkers all make fun of my broccoli and hummus breakfast (I tend to eat simply) while they push the more "normal" bagels, donuts, and McDonald's with a mocha frappe into their mouths. Food is such a weird peer pressure activity that no wonder so many people have issues with it.

Good series. I couldn't help but chuckle at "we're here, we're sphere, get used to it". I guess in the cases of benign obesity it may have to do in part with where much of the fat is located in the body such as fat just being mainly under the skin as opposed to surrounding the organs for example.

BMI doesn't work for people on the extremes. If you're truly under 12% body fat then you're undoubtedly extremely muscular and muscles weigh a lot. About 5% of the population is so muscular that the BMI doesn't work and conversely about 5%, have so little muscle that the BMI doesn't work.

I decided to go plant based on 2017, and on 2020 I got a gastric band, I exercise 1-1h30min a week (I know is not much) but I am still with a BMI of 40. At this point I am very demotivated, I feel restricted without seeing the results I want. My GP said everything looks ok but at the same time recommends me to lose weight. I’m really trying! I must be doing something wrong yet still don’t know what it is.

I was in quite (QUITE...)similar situation untill recently, what did the trick to me is 16/8 Intermittent Fasting. I managed to get my BMI down to 23(!!) in, roughly, a year of doing more-less just that and plant-based food; basically eat whatever you want during 8 fixed hours every day, and the remaining 16 is sleep+roughly 8 hours of tea/coffee(no sugar or cream added!)/cocoa and such zero(ish) calorie stuff. You might be overeating during these 8 hours of food - in the first days - and then if all goes right you will just drop calorie consumption to where it should be. PS The hard part (the crysis = when most people get frustrated and quit) is first week or two, then you should get used to it; I certainly did and now I am living my life normally eating like that everyday; I also managed to get my mom to switch to 16/8 :) PPS Don't expect quick results or a miracle - just be a character and live through the initial week(s) of frustration; also DON't stop once you get your BMI below 30 or 25 (or wherever you want it); I've read that lots of people typically do that "hooray, I did it!" and then slowly return to their earlier eating habits and BMI goes back up. The point is to permanently change the lifestyle, and I can't repeat this enough: the most critical, the most important is to keep on doing it through the first week or two, that will likely be the crysis and "Maybe I should quit....or just one cheat day..." and all that. Anyway, good luck with whatever you choose to do!

Be careful with what you are consuming. Being plant based does not mean that you are avoiding processed foods full of sugar, oil, and salt. Be committed to a WHOLE FOOD plant based lifestyle. Try to eliminate anything that comes in a bag or box found in the inner aisles of supermarkets. The best and healthiest foods are in the produce section, dried bean section, and frozen fruit and vegetable aisle. Good luck and stay strong.
