Here I go again trying to mix things up. This one is thanks to David Greenberg, owner of WiseStreet.com (wisestreet.com/) who graciously donated his teams time, energy and resources to create this animation. Please let me know what you think. I’m trying to think of ways to get away from the straight study-quote-study-quote tedium of most of my videos. Yes it’s a great way to present the primary scientific literature for those who already know the basics, but I also want to try to appeal to those new to the concept of healthier eating. This was going to be the final video of this experimental 11-part series, but an animated summary of How Not to Die (nutritionfacts.org/book/) was just created, so I’ll be putting that up to wrap out a dozen. Check out the other 10 if you want a good overview in hopes you’ll get hooked on the science!
1. The Story of NutritionFacts.org (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-s...)
2. Why You Should Care About Nutrition (nutritionfacts.org/video/why-y...)
3. Taking Personal Responsibility for Your Health (nutritionfacts.org/video/takin...)

9. How Not to Die from Kidney Disease (nutritionfacts.org/video/how-n...)
10. How Not to Die from High Blood Pressure (nutritionfacts.org/video/how-n...)

Doctor Greger, thank you for everything you do. My family never promoted veggies to me, if they did, they doused the salad in ranch. I grew up obese. Every day when I would lay down in bed, my fat surrounding my neck and on my neck would just suffocate me. The worst part was, I was so addicted to processed meats and sugary foods that I thought that I could never give it up, even though it was killing me. At age fourteen, my cholesterol was at a whopping level of 200. I felt so groggy and so unhealthy but "Protein made you lean and carbohydrates made you fat." Don't even get me started on extreme calorie restriction for weight loss. Been there, done that, became malnourished and even more sick. I listened to the diet industry and just got even more sick and more depressed, because all I wanted was a banana but the industry had told me that sugar made me fat. Eight months ago I went on a fully plant based diet with no animal proteins and my cholesterol has never been lower in my life. I've never been able to maintain a healthy weight in my life. I wake up every morning full of energy and happy. Thank you for spreading such a positive and influential message. I will never be able to repay you for the good you have done in my life. Keep up the good work! I can't wait to see what point you'll reach in the next couple of years, and how well known you'll be! Cheers!

The optimal human diet is keto 80% fat, 15% protein, 5% carbs. Stop believing the lies of this world. Do you also believe the lies of evolution? Have you seen Kent Hovind debate the anti-science evolutionist professors and make fools of them? On google research keto, and listen to all the MD's/Ph.D's tell you the truth. Dr. Greger is not that narrow in focus. You can lose weight eating chocolates. So long as it is only a few chocolates a day and nothing else. You can even lose weight eating nothing. Yeah, I know, insane, ins't it? [sarcasm]. His focus is on scientific consensus on how to be as healthy as possible regarding nutrition... and on losing weight healthfully and then keeping it off because you have in the meantime changed your life around a healthy diet.

Hello Dr Gregor, I am studying to be a student dietitian in Australia and in the Australian guidelines to healthy eating (which is evidenced based) there are 5 core food groups one being lean meats, legumes, nuts, tofu etc and another group dairy. My question is that excluding these food groups completely a good idea? Wouldn't moderation of these food groups be ok like 3 serves of 65g of lean meat or the recommended serves of dairy? As iron,zinc, protein are possible to get in a plant based diet but make it much harder to achieve as there needs to be a lot of variety, especially for low socio-economic families. Certain people that are homebound will find it very difficult to meet their vitamin D requirements and B12 is impossible to get from a complete plant diet. I have always been taught to promote a balance diet, everything in moderation and not try to exclude certain food groups even discretionary food items, as this could distort someone's relationship with food. I know this video is 3 weeks old but any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

DrGreger if you want to help the community please do a video on organic pesticides and the positives and negatives, so many of your audience are unaware, you could discuss things like Rotenone and Parkinson's and whatever other knowledge you have. Organic pesticides may not have been tested as much as man made ones, they may actually be harder on the animals they kill as they were not specifically designed to kill animals. All mass produced organic foods would most likely have had organic pesticides used on them. You could really help your community, giving them the information to make informed choices.

Please please please do a video on keto (vegan) diets! Does research truly support the claim that a keto diet prevents or starves cancer cells, reduces appetite, and what exactly happens to any excess fat calories we eat if our bodies aren't able to convert them to stored energy? I've been a hclf plant-based vegan for three years now and I really like the claims that the keto community makes but I'm still not 100% sold. Additionally, I've been eating low carb high fat plant-based for a month now and I haven't lost any fat / weight. I haven't done any cardio exercise in awhile, but I do walk about 14-18 miles a week. I feel like I'm on a defeatist path. I eat only until I feel full and the excess weight still won't come off. In the past, I always had to drastically reduce my calories (~900 daily) to effect weight loss. I was hoping that those days were over but it seems I'll have to go that route again, which is ED triggering for me. I'm 5'3" and I've been stuck at 109 lbs. since August. Ugh

JulofDenial I did see a vid a while back by am MD talking about using keto to starve cancer. I just did a quick look for the vid and couldn't find it. I do believe a proper keto diet is effective in preventing cancer - based on what I hear from medical researchers. Please watch this great vid: Dr Mike Eades - 'Paleopathology and the Origins of the Paleo Diet' Keto and Paleo are both good but keto is best. Yes it is amazing how keto reduces appetite! When starting keto you will need to buy a precise extra glucose/ketone meter and learn how to use it. On keto you can eat all you want and still lose weight. What is ED triggering? If you are 5'3'' and 109 maybe adding a little muscle mass would be good? Your weight isn't important, focus on muscle to fat ratio. Really none of this matters, DO YOU KNOW JESUS CHRIST?

clint076 Thanks for replying to my questions! 1) The video I had watched about plant-based low-carb diets healing cancer was called the Gerson Treatment method. That prompted me to reexamine keto from a vegan perspective rather than a meat/dairy/processed food perspective, which I did in the past (ate keto omnivorous). I believe keto does starve cancer cells and especially when it's a whole foods diet, the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals give keto that one two punch. 2) When I mentioned ED triggering, I meant that if I have to start counting calories on a keto diet in order to lose fat, it will trigger an Eating Disorder relapse and I'll go into anorexia mode once again (bulimia as well). Optimum health is very important to me, not because of appearance, but because I pray often for a life free of burden to others so that I can be the strength, the caregiver. I understand that there is grace, humility and virtue in both positions, but I'd still prefer to be a caregiver rather than dependent on another. The state of society and the epidemic of negligent treatment of those who are dependent on others would make anyone wince at the thought of being in their shoes. 3) I have also heard and read that keto is not a longer-term lifestyle, that people should only practice it for a few months at a time or else they could jeopardize their health. Is this true, and how long have you been on a keto lifestyle? 4) Have no fear, I'm unshakable in my belief and faith in Jesus Christ. I've battled many agnostics, atheists, antagonists, including the most hated of believers according to Jesus, the lukewarm Christian. lol 5) Lastly, thank you for the recommended video. I'm going to watch it now and will come back to comment if it warrants.

Julofdenial I was almost going to mention Gerson Therapy in my previous comment. In my home I have Charlotte Gerson's book "Healing The Gerson Way." Before keto I was doing Gerson. I did Gerson for a year. I juiced daily, did many coffee enemas, and took a few recommend supplements. I am healthy and trying to stay that way. Are you familiar with the work of Weston Price? Sorry to hear about the ED. Keto is a lifestyle for the long term! Have you read my many comments posted on this vid? Many people have been living in ketosis for years - I started 5/14/15. Keto is an anti-aging diet. Ketones as your fuel source generate less metabolic waste which results in fewer free radicals, plus you have the option of eating less because you don't get major hunger pains, plus keto people have lower blood inflammation markers than vegans :) A wise person knows to look at the direction where institutions are trying to lead then do the opposite. In case you don't know we live in opposite world. I am very happy to you have given your life to the Lord! It sounds as if you could be the real deal. Let me know what you think of the vid I sent you. Also maybe take a look at the activity from my channel, I have liked/favorite a lot of good things. What city and state are you in? Jesus bless you

Ketogenic diets are extremely unhealthy. They cause your body's methylglyoxal levels to rise to dangerously high levels for example. Just look at Weston Price for example who died of a heart attack relatively young.

Three body cycles which I have practiced for a while on every diet with great results. From 4 AM to 12 Noon is the Elimination cycle, no food should be taken in at this time that would disrupt this function, except for fruit because fruit is a pre-digested food. (Liquids/Smoothies/Light fruit) From 12 Noon to 8 PM is the Appropriation cycle, eating and digestion of food, well combined food is a plus. (Meals/Solids) From 8 PM to 4 AM is the Assimilation cycle, nutrient extraction. (Light teas ect..)

Dr. Gregor, can grains in my diet be entirely replaced with white potatoes? Its just more convenient for me that way, and the nutritional target tracker I used tells me I am still getting 100% of my daily targets with just potatoes.

***** He specifically said "bad" with regards to a plain baked potato. Sweet potatoes would not be included. I didn't realize there would be confusion over that.

Sorry that's not true- the study using potatoes was largely based on how americans consume potatoes most commonly- deep fried or slathered in sour cream, cheese and bacon!

I would argue that ham can be an "excellent" source of protein. It just depends on your definition of excellence and your expactations of it. If excellent simply means healthy, then it isn't. If it means it supplies proteins and tastes the yummiest, then it definitely is ;)

Michael! This kind of video-pills are great way to spread the message, in my opinion! Also because, I believe, there are *so* many ways to *make people realize* with very simple examples/explanations, how vegan whole food diet is *so much better* all-around than non-whole products and/or products derived from animals, just like you did in this video! And adding laughable attempts of wicked industries to justify their sickening products!

Fats are different, for instance Omega-3, there are three kinds of it. The two healthy ones, which we mainly get through fish are called DHA & EPA. The one that we can't synthesize, ALA, is the one that we get from plants, mainly flaxseed. When you hear some vegetarian shouting out loud "But this is suuuuper packed with omega-3", it's usually in the form of ALA and not useful for you. The same goes with saturated fats, which is talked about in this short clip, the saturated fat in dairy is healthy for you, and will lower your bad cholesterol (cholesterol also comes in good and bad forms). Bacon fat? Not so good. Take care, use your brains and don't listen to guys like the one in the video, but to youtube comments instead. #CharlatansEverywhere

Hi there, I am a volunteer with Dr. Greger. Contrary to popular belief, our bodies actually take ALA and elongates it into EPA and DHA, which our body can then use as normal. I encourage you to watch Dr. Greger's video on KZbin or NutritionFacts.org called "BOLD Indeed: Beef Lowers Cholesterol?" This shows how studies can easily be manipulated to show that saturated fat can decrease cholesterol, which in fact does not decrease cholesterol levels.

So what's wrong with saturated fat?
@nutritionfactssupportteam4525
@nutritionfactssupportteam4525 7 жыл бұрын
Saturated fat has been shown overwhelmingly to increase risk of heart disease and other chronic diseases. Many studies are poorly or misleadingly designed to show that saturated fat does not increase blood cholesterol or have detrimental effects on health, but Dr. Greger points out some of these flawed studies in several videos on his website and on youtube. One of the videos is entitled "The Saturated Fat Studies: Buttering Up the Public" and "The Saturated Fat Studies: Set Up to Fail". Additionally, this video talks about the ideal recommendation for saturated fat intake: Trans Fat, Saturated Fat, and Cholesterol: Tolerable Upper Intake of Zero. I hope this helps!

I'm a japanese and we eat fish, eggs and pork twice a week but we live longer than most the world population..i would think eating balance diet and whole grains is key for longevity...my grand parents and relatives never had a heart problems, diabetes nor high blood pressure as far i can remember... I don't intent to triggered my vegan friends but i just don't agree with the idea that eating strictly Whole plant based diet without any kind animal protien/product will make live longer...

how the heck can people manage a keto diet? been vegan my whole life and tried a vegan keto diet for two days and i just gave up after 36 hours i needed energy
@vincec3590

It takes at least 3 days for the body to just start to adapt to a ketogenic diet and you may feel weak and crappy during this transition. AND that's for a younger health person. For diabetics, obese or older people it could take a few weeks. ALSO it takes 2 to 8 weeks for the body to adapt to produce enough energy to exercise at the same output levels as before you started the keto diet. AND that's only if you actually do the diet properly - something most people don't do. However if you do the keto diet properly you will continue adapting for the next 1 to 2 years getting more mental and physical energy than you ever had before.

I hate to tell you, sunshine, but low energy comes with any diet transition. I had the hardest time getting energy from a plant-based diet when I stopped eating meat but finally found my "right" formula after much trial and error. That's why some people feel miserable on a plant-based diet for a few days or even a few months, but it doesn't mean they should give up.

there's no reason why I would do the keto diet anyway - 1-2 years on that shit seems dangerous, restricting any macro or micronutrient is IMO

I wouldn't advise for a Vegan Keto diet (at least until there's enough evidence proving it can be sustainable), as you might never get into deep ketosis and reap the full benefits of Keto (at this point you will either have a large caloric deficit and/or be plainly doing a "low-carb" regimen that will most likely make you feel tired because you are actually ingesting too much carbs from plants). In fact, I wouldn't advise for a vegan diet at all; as long as you eat plant-based and stay away from highly processed crap-food, you're pretty safe though. Eat Smart and be wary of fads.
