I agree, I do that too. But lately I've been wondering whether that's a good idea because of the whole "don't eat sugars and fats together" issue. Diabetes, candida etc etc
@100kby359 жыл бұрын
+The Vegan Swan why can't you have carbs and fats together?
@ovonisamja80249 жыл бұрын
+Melbourne Vegan You can, and it's unavoidable if you eat candies and cakes etc, but you probably shouldn't. The quick answer I got when I asked the same question when inquiring about fruit smoothies was if you're about to consume sugars you shouldn't consume fat for a while. The fat forms as a layer around the blood cells and makes it hard for sugar to enter the cell. Than the insulin is pumped into the blood to take away all the excess sugar floating around resulting in drop of energy (which you never actually absorbed). That shaky feeling when your sugar is low that you probably know. Now if you're interested in the context of the above, you can read on. If not, just skip this and don't waste your time. The reason I was inquiring about fats and sugars is that I was putting almonds and avocado into my fruit smoothies and got the shakes after about 15 minutes or so. And no matter if I drank the stuff quickly or slowly, I was feeling week. After the advice to take out the fat I than stopped mixing in the avocado and almonds, the shakes were gone, and I felt the energy I was taking in from the sugars, and it lasted longer. I'm consuming about 800 ml of fruit smoothie every day, and it keeps me going for around 3 to 4 hours, depending on my day. I just have to be careful not to drink it fast like a drink, or else I'm doomed to spend the day on toilet, which totally sucks! I usually drink it in about an hour or 2, and I try to keep it as cold as I can all the time for obvious reasons. That being said, I'm not doing any hard work during the day, and I'm sitting most of the time due to the nature of my work. But I am doing some serious and heavy sports every evening for bout 3h and although I have a regular meal every day, I have been going on competitions where everyone is hungry so I don't think that all this matters much. Our bodies can obviously take much more stress than we think. I was advised to check my triglyceride levels (which I still haven't done) if I consume that much fruit. Triglycerides are fat from fruit which for some reason shouldn't be too high. Hope I answered your question in some detail. I'm not an expert on this subject, I'm just a regular, everyday normal guy, and I'm speaking from my own experience which doesn't necessarily transfer well to other people. So you should listen to your own body and see what works best for you. Cheers.

Dr. Greger, I am hoping you might "reissue" this video under the heading "dental issues in vegans" or something similar because the dental related info towards the end of the video is very important for those on plant based diets and people might see green smoothie title and miss out on this good dental related info. I come across many vegans who still don't know to wait to brush. Just because they don't have sensitivity YET doesn't mean they aren't in process of losing enamel. By the time you start having sensitivity a good deal of enamel is gone. So we should do everything possible to avoid this. I also did go back to your site and watched your earlier dental related videos. I am suffering greatly due to enamel loss despite waiting to brush and this only started after I went vegan....I am not a fruitarain but do eat fruit every day. I am trying everything I can to save my teeth so any further suggestions or info you might pass along would be greatly appreciated.

I did a pure green smoothie diet for 2 months. The real downside that NO ONE tells you is... flatulence. You get very uncomfortable, even painful, bloated feelings very regularly, which is only relieved by passing wind. A very fruity wind, but that's it. Stools become rare, extremely solid, hard to pass and are very dark green. The reasoning I can only think of is that the leafy based stools become a blockage as the fruit breaks down extremely quickly in comparison and ferments in your bowls, putting pressure on your intestines - hence the uncomfortable or painful feelings. I lasted 2 months before really just wanting to eat food normally. It was an interesting experiment on myself, but not one I will be repeating in a hurry.

Thanks for this video. Very timely advice about the dental issues. I have been rudely attacked by a vegan KZbinr for my assertation that dentists advise to wait after you consume acidic foods to brush your teeth. I have read tons of research and found that dentists advise rinsing and waiting to brush, anywhere from 20 min to 1 hour. You have some nice research graphs etc. I hope the person I mentioned comes and watches your video because they insist my dental problems are an anomaly among vegans and are because I am "lazy" and this person insisst that I need to brush my teeth immediately after eating/drinking. I have given them plenty of evidence and now have your video and research graphs back up my own research. I don't know why, but a lot of vegans on KZbind, especially those on basically all fruit diets are in denial about the dental consequences and what you to do to try to mitigate them. They seem to be so caught up in pushing their dogma that they are afraid to admit to any potential downside to high fruit diets. I an not even close to being a fruitarian but after a year of vegan diet I am having a lot of sensitivity due to enamel loss. I even had cavities for the first time this year and I am really worried about my dental health. I am using a glass straw, rinsing immediately, chewing sugarless gum, waiting to brush, using a very soft brush, using a waterpic on very low, oil pulling, and taking oral probiotics which claim to repopulate the mouth with good bacteria. All this and still the serious issues. Naturally good teeth run in my family and I have always gone to the dentist at least 2-3 times a year for cleanings and checkups so I am very upset by the recent problems. I am in my 40s and never thought I would have this kind of dental pain. I have even purchased a prescription strength sensitivity reducing toothpaste.

I try to make a green juice every day with romaine, red chard, green Swiss chard, endive, bell pepper, ginger, 1 Granny Smith apple, 1-2 tbsps. bone broth powder, and 1 tbsp. flax oil. It usually ends up being between 10-16 oz. depending on how much of all the lettuces I add. Just enough sweetness from the apple to offset all the green leafy veggies, and the flax oil to aid in the absorption of everything else. I am really liking this routine.

I put baby carrots, baby spinach, and some oats into my fruit smoothies. I think adding them to it adds more nutrition and actually makes them heavier and more filling. And yes, I definitely agree that people eat things, in general, too quickly. Your smoothie should be sipped, relatively, slowly. Say five to ten minutes, at the very least. Twenty to thirty would be ideal, but maybe not practical for some.
@Joseph1NJ8 жыл бұрын
In general, Americans eat and drink too fast. Which adds to our obesity epidemic. I've always hated the 30 minute lunch; it just isn't enough time. All food, meals, snacks and even beverages with the exception of a quick glass of water for thirst, should be enjoyed over time. Preferably in a relaxed state, and with freind's and family should you choose. Just eating slower has many health benefits.

+Spiritual Insanity do yourself and the planet a favor and order a glass straw. They come in wide diameter which is great for smoothies so fruit pieces and powders don't clog up the straw. It sounds like they would break easily, but they don't and they come with a LIFETIME warranty against breakage. I have used mine 3 times a day for over 6 months so think how many plastic straws I saved from the landfill!! Over time it will pay for itself. Much better than sucking on toxic plastic too. Yes I am transitioning away from all my plastic storage containers to glass. I had an ex boyfriend who would actually microwave all his food in the plastic containers (NOT microwave safe ones)....the containers would get bubbly and he would eat the food. I was just horrified. No telling what chemicals he was eating. I don't think anyone ever has shown glass to leach chemicals into food so why use plastic?

+Boyd McCollum yup, probably the rate of consumption. I have been drinking around 800ml of fruit smoothies every day for the past 6 months which mostly consists of bananas and dates and I haven't gained, nor lost my mass. The problem is probably that those people are taking those smoothies as a drink, which it's not! It's food, and you have to approach it as such. They were probably eating stuff along with their smoothies.

I experienced the same thing when I was starting out. But than I asked around for other peoples opinion, and finally found what worked best for me. So I found out that if I consume it as a drink, and drink it fast, I get hungry in about an hour, even less at times. And it's a real intensive hunger sensation. But when I take my time, and sip it for a longer period, like 30min to 1h, that 800ml lasts me for 3, sometimes even about 5 hours. The only problem is keeping it cold, and I add frozen fruits which cool it down and lasts just enough. Recently I've started adding proteins because of my intensive trainings. The only difference with and without proteins I can feel is that I'm not hungry that fast. Don't know if it improves my performance.

I'll for sure try this and drink it slow, I'm just concerned if some one has high blood sugar or diabetes this may not be good and your better off eating whole than in a smoothies.

I never understood why patient's cholesterol increases after starting plant based diets or drinking smoothies. Is the body compensating for the lack or less meat intake? 😰😰😰

1) Great info regarding smoothies. Also- a great breakfast with green smoothies with flaxseeds and a cup of hot green tea or coffee- the smoothie, slowly consumed, will fill you up AND the tea/coffee is also warming and filling, as well as providing antioxidants. 2) I did not know people ate the afterbirth. That's Hannibal level right there.

Now in your green tea videos and your amla videos, you talk about the almost-too-good-to-be-true effects of green tea and amla on your teeth. So much so that they help protect your teeth from the sugar feeding the bacteria and rotting your teeth (green tea killing the bacteria and amla inhibiting their growth). If my smoothie has green tea and amla in it, would you suspect there be any negative effects on teeth from the smoothie?

Anthony Llabres Dr Greger suggested flax seed to increase the palatablity. It kinda smoothes everything out. But I'd flash steam those greens with ginger slices and serve them topped with nutritional yeast for flavor and a bit of sesame seed for crunch and bioavailability of oil soluble nutrients.🌱

I drink my morning smoothie with lots of water and a very small straw. Works great!
