Hey Dr. Greger! I have a medical question. I’m a transgender man who is going to be starting HRT in about a week. I’ve been doing my research on what to expect and how to prepare, but I keep seeing that one of the side effects of testosterone hormone therapy can be increased lipid and cholesterol storage, and because of that a risk of possible cardiovascular events. I don’t eat any cholesterol and I stay away from oils and high fat foods. My question is, “If you eat a low fat WFPB diet would male hormone replacement therapy still have this possible side-effect of raising cholesterol and lipid levels?” I can’t find any literature on on the effect of diet on hormone therapy as a trans person, let alone the effect of a WFPB diet on transgender people! Most of the information I can find is about how trans men need to eat plenty of meats to increase protein levels and should stay away from fatty and fried foods to avoid the risk of heart disease. Thank you! 😊

As you pointed out, there is not enough research to transition in full knowledge of what will happen. So we live in a world where our hormonal balance is constantly attacked and you plan on forcing violent changes to your health ... This is as stupid as beginning to smoke. I don't know how old you are, but every stupid thing you do to your health being young, you pay it - not immediately - but 100% later. At the end of the growth (25~30 yo) you already begin to decay, and the fantastic ability of the body to regenerate, decreases. So maybe use your curiosity about health to take care about your health, not destroying it.

@@v-sig2389 to see a comment like this from someone I respected so much is highly disappointing. I was asking about possible lipid/cholesterol storage, not the overall health effect. I know there are risks. My doctor has no background in diet and does not know if there is a link between this side effect and diet, but the studies that have been done about transgender people transitioning with hormones to that of the opposite sex have shown that hormone therapy in many cases reduces risk of cancers like breast, ovary and cervical in the case of transgendered men. To say that a therapy that is medically necessary (and has been proven to reduce the risk of severe mental health disease among gender non-conforming people) is akin to smoking, which is a lifestyle choice by the way, is just untrue based off of the bulk of the literature that has been done since HRT first came into the medical spotlight around the 1960s. To say that transitioning will ‘destroy my health’ is also equally untrue based off of the medical literature that is out there. I’m sorry I even asked but I guess the saying, “Never meet your heroes” exists for a reason.

Hey Dr. Greger......in case you aren't aware....the Quorn products in the USA are NOT all Vegan, but many or most of them use EGG WHITES as a bonding ingredient.........FYI....so, Vegan peeps.....don't run out to the store and buy these products unless of course you see the VEGAN label on it....which they do put on it for the products that don't use egg whites.....

These are meat substitutes, not meats. Meat is muscle or organ that comes from livestock. Nuts also contain ‘meat’. Plants other than nuts are NOT “meat”.

@@Ben-oi6kz I'm not offended by the word "meat" - I love quality meat. But making something from plants and then implying that it is meat, does not gel. Anyway, you obviously have not read the recent Oxford (very prestigious) study findings in which they concluded that you were more likely to get a stroke if you were a vegan or vegetarian than if you were a meat eater! Do some homework and you'll see...
@big5astra
@big5astra 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ben-oi6kz Not "significantly higher", but higher none the less - even according to Dr Greger in a previous video. So you saying that "heart disease that would have been preventable if she had just eaten plants", is not correct. Just saying...

@@big5astra Your complaint is odd since animals make meat by consuming plants. By your logic we can't call meat meat since it came from plant matter.
@big5astra
@big5astra 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ben-oi6kz Sigh, Ben, an interesting study you've linked, thanks. But it is still and anecdotal study and as the authors say (at the bottom if you've read that far) "However, we are unable to infer if there is an absolute level of plant food or animal food intake that is associated with health outcomes" And of course some of the conclusions they draw could not be replicated by an Australian study (ref #6) Frankly, if you want to eat vegan/vegetarian, I really don't care, knock yourself out and good luck to you and your body's nutritional requirements. The point of my first comment was to point out the ridiculous nature of the title of the video. If you're vegan/vegetarian and don't want to have the dreaded MEAT cross your lips, why would you even entertain the possibility of equating some mish-mash concoction of plant-based items to meat. It just does not make sense. Just call it "plant mish-mash". Plants are not meats, period, that's why we have 2 distinct names for them. That was the intention of my initial comment, to point this out And, lol, Ben, I do know the difference between a stroke and other forms of CVD!
