I really enjoyed my conversation with Mary Ruddick. She’s a practicing nutritionist and understands what works in “real life” versus what works in theory. We talked about what we’re seeing in our practices and what has been working for our patients. In this clip we discuss iodine and why it became so misunderstood.

What about when you've had the thyroid removed? Is it okay to take iodine?
@joannlove3414

Interesting question, I hope they answer it for you. I remember when in 1983 when I first practiced that people who had their thyroid gland removed were put on NP thyroid and otherwise people with hypothyroidism were on synthetic thyroid replacement. I took synthetic thyroid for 6 moths for Hashimoto's and then I switched to NP thyroid and fully recovered my energy, and have taken it for the last 35 years. NP thyroid hormone is desiccated porcine i.e. pig thyroid and almost bio identical to our human thyroid. Hope you can find a practitioner who will help you make the switch to see if you like it better.

Dr. David Brownstein says in his book that even though thyroid tissue concentrates more iodine than any other tissue in the body the majority of iodine in the human body is not in the thyroid because the thyroid is so small. so yes he would say that your entire body still needs iodine. I believe also in his book he states that every cell in the human body has receptors for iodine. If you haven't read it read his book on Iodine

Talk about "side effects" of iodine. Lol I took a really good nascent iodine in 10th grade. I also took a "focus supplement" and it was the first day of track practice after winter break. I took the full dose of three drops of iodine and I didn't drink enough water that day (a long with the other supplement). I was throwing up after practice. It was nuts. But... That was the first time ever taking that type of iodine. I was sore for a week or so. When I started taking it again, I would put a mouth full of water in my mouth and put one drop of the same iodine in my mouth. After a month or so, things got a lot better.

@tarpara
@tarpara 5 ай бұрын
1. 200-300mcg of Selenium preferably through good quality food like grass-finished meats, but supplement is okay too. 2. You need to have sufficient sodium levels 140 above (US) so you must be getting enough good quality UNREFINED salt (Celtic sea salt or Redmonds). Half tsp twice or thrice a day in water in addition to what you add to food is good. You can have 3-5g of sodium for optimal health (which about 8-10g of salt). If you’re on blood pressure medication your sodium levels will likely be low, and you should adjust your diet such that to get off of those meds (Neo40 / N1O1 can fix this alongside nitrate containing foods) 3. Get you thyroid panel checked including your thyroid antibodies in case you have undiagnosed hashimoto’s

Be sure to buy Lugol’s it contains both iodine and iodide which is essential. I eat 2 Brazil nuts everyday which I soak for 24 hours before eating. All nuts contain a phytic acid which prevents nutrients from being absorbed. Once they are soaked the phytic acid is removed. I ordered 15% Lugol’s from Amazon and I take 6 drops everyday. Iodine is water soluble so your body will use what it needs then you’ll urinate the rest. You cannot overuse it.

I would start with kelp extract or dulse flakes before switching over to an iodine supplement. My body was super toxic in heavy metals and radiation and fungus and parasites and radiation and just one drop of an iodine supplement a few years ago put me in a heavy heavy detox. Later I started with Spirulina (a knife’s tip) every day or every other day and then over weeks more and more. Now I am able to supplement with iodine and even with 2,5 mg I could feel a bit of detox still 😅 Take it super slow and maybe, if you want to just use the supplement, use it only on your skin.

Judy "dirty carnivore" with conventionally raised meats has a messed up lipid profile. grain fed beef has omega 6:3 ratio of 20:1 lol. This causes athersclerosis. Grass fed beef ratio 5:1 and does not. Omega 6 is toxic in high amounts like a lot of carnivores are eating. unfortunately the truth hurts and the reality is, grass fed beef is healthy and grain fed beef is not. We are supposed to eat animals who were fed natural diets. That being said chickens and pigs have omega 6:3 ratio 20:1 or worse. Even pasture raised pigs and chickens have approximately 10:1 so they will mess with 6:3 ratio regardless. Maybe our ancestors didnt eat a pile of pork belly or chicken wings? But yeah healthy omega ratio is around 4:1 to 1:4 and dirty carnivore/ including pork and chicken will leave someone with a ratio of 10-20:1. This ratio causes inflammation, athersclerosis, raises apob. Turns out bacon and eggs do cause heart disease. Not cause the saturated fat or cholesterol, but the omega 6

Beef is such a low source of PUFAs that grain-v.-grassfed is not a major issue. Simply supplementing with cold-water fish is adequate to rebalance omega 3. OTOH chicken and pork are major sources of omega 6 and should be limited unless from a pastured form.

A person would have to eat non polluted wild fish to bring that ratio to a 5:1. If enough fish is eaten it should be a reasonable strategy though Im very skeptical of omega 6 at all in body due to it easily oxidizing in the body.
