I bought my System-8 about a year and a half ago, and it was primarily for the plug outs, because it does them exquisitely well. However... since then I also discover the internal system 8 engine and it is phenomenal! There are multiple oscillator modes including a version of FM, formants, etc., and the filter modes are crazy too. This is a serious noise machine. Also the knob and slider layout is fantastic. As someone who grew up with a DX7 (and I still have it!) I am DONE with synths that require menu diving.

I bought a Sys-8 a couple of years ago primarily for the plug outs too! Now that Roland came out with the Juno 60 plug out, my hopes have been fulfilled. I had a J60 decades ago, but sold and regretted it from about a week later. When the JU-06a was released, in late summer of ‘19, I hoped Roland would release the ACB model of the 60 as a plug out since. Wasn’t interested in buying the Boutique since it was only 4 voices. At a small synth expo I attended shortly after the JU-06a was released, Roland was there showing off that unit as well as the J-Xm, and a couple other goodies. I asked a Roland rep if they’ll do a plug out of the J60. He said it’s likely but couldn’t really confirm. So I had hoped since then, and here we are. I now have the J8, J60 and P3 on board, and am a happy camper.

I have analogue hardware in the Pro 3, Subsequent 37 and Matriarch, and then have a bunch of software, including the full Roland cloud stuff and lifetime keys. So I think I have all the stuff you’re mentioning on there? I’m still struggling to see why I would just do all this in software. Other than the hardware interaction that it. Maybe that’s the point? My rule for hardware is that it has to do stuff the software cannot.... It’s not because I’m an analog purist....
@brobocop82933 жыл бұрын
i could see your logic here . but there are a few factors. A. the FPA chips native to the system 8 just handle the software code more efficiently. its really snappy and just works like it should. B. The sequencer on the system 8 is fantastic. C. Real time control with knobs and sliders, it just feels like an analog synth as far as the experience goes. D.. every thing else is preference. but for me i cant stand VST's for a ton of different reasons. like one example is every time i want to reformat my computer i have to reinstall tons of different VST's ... and if i try and load up older songs to work on and i didnt install that ONE vst i forgot about the song wont load and i have to track it down and install it and just uuhg. nah. hardware is always there for you with a lick of the power switch.

ACB is (to my knowledge) based on circuit simulation modelling programs. For example SPICE, an open source circuit modelling program was introduced in 1975 (Wikipedia). Arturia and other companies have different marketing terms for this, but that is what these three initial supposed technologies are, marketing terms. There is nothing wrong with marketing and I think Roland is making some nice stuff, but I feel they and other legacy synth companies may struggle in the future. As one person, or small development team can put out a comparable VST at a much lower price (TAL J-8, I'm looking at you, or Arturia if you want something more mainstream (and slightly more expensive). Legacy synths possibly will become less desirable too over time. No doubt younger musicians and producers will get misty eyed over old VSTs and there will likely be a market for reissues of today's Plugins ten to twenty years from now.

system 8 and system 1 are true roland successors of vintage roland synth product line, the whole structures looking pretty similar with jupiter and some mini synth(system 1), it plus more osc and filter, effects, lfo types, arp or seq mod knob, but the truth not, while you playing with it you can found the internal routing could very complex(ok most users never give enough notice to internal of every synth, it could has huge difference even the synth type was same, and system 8 and system 1, sounding completely different), osc color mod, also working with other like pitch, lfo, to make a complex sound you have never heard before, to make a future sound, the instruction is, try to use 2 osc, then mod it with flter, pitch mod or lfo(omg sub can be the mod), then choose sync mode(sometimes the ring), then tweak the cross mod to hear, the distinct of it sounds, then when playing, tweaking lfo, cross mod, and sequencer knob, however it also has flaws, the build like a plastic toy at that price range, the keybed could be piano like, and do some optimization, the vst plugin could be more efficient, I have many original presets but I don't have that synth actually, hardware only, price, difficult in sound design, and without amount of 3rd party presets, though it very powerful and ahead, but still can't be popular in modern production market, the massive x, in similar situation, after the powerful synth released many years ago, you can't found it in any popular works, what happened with the world musician?

Did I miss the part as to why you sold the JP-8000?

I only need one keyboard synth and the System-8 is a great replacement for it (for my needs)

it just doesnt make sense to me to buy into the roland world in 2022 because youll just end up sounding like a 1990 italian pop musician or even worse, trance. the roland sound is very commercial. the records i was buyinh back then were much more nuanced / nyc house / deep chicago. i know a lot of that sound was based on roland drum machines etc but the synth stuff theyve done mainly appeals to cheap sounding pop dance. its just not credible in 2022.
