@@NutzAboutBolts Agreed. Toyota torque specs are 15ft-lbs and the 13ft-lbs is the required reduction for the use of anti-seize on the threads.

OOO!! Can you maybe add an overlay to the video with this correction? I missed this pinned post and had all the specs written down. But then I got confused, not sure (few weeks later) where I'd gotten those specs from. I even searched for "torque" in the comments while working on the job, but then of course missed this post because it doesn't say torque. Maybe even that alone would help......?

I think all his torque specs he mistakingly was giving the Nm spec - 20Nm is 15 ftLb *and for the coils 10Nm is 7 ftLb

Great video. Let me just say to the people watching this that are looking to do this for the first time, it is really not that hard to do. I thought when I watched this video it was going to be a Major pain, but with the help of this video it really took me no time at all and in the end I realized it wasn't really that hard to do. It is definitely a lot more work than it should be but not really that difficult. Some of you made comments that you wouldn't buy this car because of this and that is definitely ridiculous. This is not that big of a deal to not buy this car over. It's a great car to own and definitely worth it. Thanks again for the great video it really helped out

Not buying this car because spark plug replacement takes a lot of work is a ridiculous comment. However, doing all this work to replace spark plugs/coils also ridiculous... It wouldn't have been this difficult if engineers had designed it properly.

Followed this video to replace my plugs and coils in my 2013 Prius today. It has almost 224,000 miles on the factory original parts. I thought I had everything needed.... sockets, extension, ratchet, torque wrench. Had it apart down to removing the spark plugs, found I had a 5/8" rather than 9'/16" spark plug socket. Back to AutoZone.... then when I went to torque them, found I needed a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter. Back to Home Depot. However once all the right tools, the job was very straightforward. Moral of the story - don't just check that you have all the right parts, tools and pastes... double check that your sockets work with your extension, ratchet and torque wrench. Could have saved myself a few hours.... not the fault of the video, it is excellent. I should have paid more attention to the recommended tools, and as said, checked compatibility.

I looked under hood and realized that whole washer assembly covered the coils, access without removal was impossible. I googled "2010 prius coil replacement/installation", no results I googled "2010 prius spark plug installation" and found your PERFECT VIDEO. Exactly what I needed. Thanks a million.

Having been a decent wrench for most of my adult life I have to congratulate you as there are few mechanic like yourself that will use anti seize on the spark plug threads also using a torque wrench on the spark plugs, it is no wonder these people that don't use anti seize on the threads or dielectric grease on the igniters or coils wind up breaking the frozen spark plugs of in the head. You explain everything very well and show step by step, I salute you for the professional you are... Thank You

I did this plug change the other day and it wasn't as hard as it looks. I actually took my laptop outside and just did the work following along the video. One thing I did was to take the extra time to clean everything since this opportunity doesn't come along very often. Something that would have been helpful to know (for us non-mechanics) is to have a plug socket that has the rubber grip washer inside of it to pull the plugs out and to safely replace the new plugs. Your part number for the plug socket is not the type with the rubber insert. So here comes the negative comments....I used a little bit of chewing gum to grip the plugs. It worked great. Thank you for the excellent videos!! You are saving people a ton of money!! My next project is the transmission fluid ($300 at dealer) and the invertor and radiator coolant changes. I'll do all three at the same time since removing that under-cover seems to be the hardest part. Thanks again !!!!

Just finished the job by following this video! My engine no longer shakes at startup. Smooth rolling now. I used 13ft torque for the new plugs as listed (I know they say 20 in the video). Also, take off the brake fluid cover or it will get popped off as you remove some of the washer assembly. The hardest part for me was removing the electrical connection of the washer assembly. Eventually it came off, but I couldn't see what I pressed to do it. Thanks for the video!

Amazing tutorial. This is my first maintenance item, after doing an oil change. My first time ever working on a car. I have a CT200h and I used a torque wrench, torqued to 20ft lbs, and even used the anti seize grease. My only annoyance is the windshield wiper cowl clearance. It’s possible to be done on the CT without removing it, but it was hard getting the extension socket out. After trying to barely push up the cowl, it would not come out. I then decided to use a flat head to retrieve my socket (didn’t want to risk breaking cowl), which worked well. I also noticed at first startup it kind of started hard. I hope I didn’t mess anything up. No CEL yet, which is good. Redlined/ accelerated fast on the interstate and it seems to accelerate well. Thank you for this easy, nice tutorial.

Video mentions 20 lb ft. of torque (at 17:03 mark). That is way too high for this engine, especially with anti-seize applied (not recommended by plug manufacturer). The factory service manual only states 15 lb ft. of torque, and that is with DRY clean threads (no anti-seize applied). If one insists on applying anti-seize (not recommended or necessary), you should reduce the torque setting by 25% to 11 or 12 lb ft. as the anti-seize acts as a lubricant, giving a faulty torque reading. Not being critical, the rest of the video is excellent and very helpful. The description only calls out 13 lb ft. which is probably safe, especially when using anti-seize. Just wanted to call attention to the verbal mention of 20 lb ft. Way too high for this engine, with lubricated plug threads. Thanks for the excellent video!

Hi everyone Just did this myself and the video was really helpful. A few things to remember: 1) It is easy to overtighten certain screws and break them. I did this for the one that holds the ignition coild and it turned an easy job into a problem for me. 2) Make sure to apply the anti-seize grease. It is very important. I forgot it and had engine misfiring. 3) Lastly double check all the connectors (make sure they clicked back nicely) and their wires before closing everything up Have fun.

Plugs can be changed without removing the covers. All you need is a #14 3/8 Deep socket with rubber insert to hold onto the plug. 2 x 3/8 x 3 inch extension bars and ratchet. Socket can be inserted with single extension and than add the other extension and remove the plug.

All good! I did my plugs this morning at 119k miles in 4.25 years on my 2010. The only change I'd make to how it was done in the video is what he did with the four clips on the windshield wiper wiring. The first one is much easier to remove if you've already taken the four bolts out of the mechanism. That makes it simple to get to the underside of the clip. The other three white clips are just taped to the wire. Cut the tape, leave the clips in place, use new tape when you put it back together. I could probably do the whole job in 45 minutes the next time I change the plugs. I spent $36 on OEM plugs which means I saved $160, if the other comment is correct about the dealer charging $200.

Nice video. It prepared me well, to do a job that was engineered to be way too difficult. The only things I would add are: 1) I would use an EXTREMELY small amount of anti-seize on the plugs. Some documentation says to use NONE. Look into it. 2) I found specs that said 18 - 24 ft. lbs for the torque. 3) Some people say not to disconnect the cables from the coil packs. I say that this gentlemen did it correctly. I tried to leave them plugged in, but I was not comfortable stretching the wires to avoid un-plugging them. Just MAKE SURE you do NOT pull on the cables! 4) I left my wiper motor cables connected to the motor and only released the two cable tiedowns on the passenger side. I then pulled the wiper motor assembly loose and set it on the mechanicals near the front of the engine compartment. It might be a good idea to lay something down first.

1) some manufacturer already add their own anti seize on their spark plugs thread already, such as NGK. You will need a little if they haven't added on there for you, so that you can prevent seizing of the spark plugs when you remove it when its at 120k miles. 2) on the repair manual, it stated 15 ft. lbs, you can check on PriusChat as well, they have a whole thread about it.

Thank you!!!! My local dealer price $200.. parts and labor. Original OEM plugs Denso CS204R11(90919-01253) Toyota changed (revised) to Denso SC16HR11 (90919-01275) a hotter plug. And most spark plug companies say not to use any anti- seize on the threads. Torque 13 ft-lb Tips watch the video at speed setting 2. And I used a cordless drill to remove all the nuts and bolts ( a lot quicker). On the windshield wiper motor/actuator, I marked the 4 holes where the long 10mm screws came out of. I only undid the 2 left clips 4:15 on the wires and than placed the whole plugged in unit on top of the engine. The whole job including cleaning fire wall area took less than a hour.

I highly recommend a dab of anti-seize. The plugs in my 2010 were nerve racking to remove. It felt like they were going to strip. I would back them out a bit and then forward a bit to relieve some of the tightness. I think plug companies recommend against it because they don't want people stripping out the cylinder with a torque wrench. I opted for seat of the pants torque-guessing. Less is more.

im an uber driver and i drive a prius , you can change the spark plugs without removing the covers and wiper motor etc, it gives you just enough space to remove the coils you need 2 short extensions to do the job , its abit of a struggle but the all job takes 30 minutes , no grease is needed and is not recommended either.

this video is great - no doubt, just a bit lengthy, some twisting and turning can be shortened. @NutzAboutBolts

over time, spark plugs electrode tips get worn down by the engine, so the spark plugs gap widen which causes the engine to run poorly, which can cause misfire. So you want to change it around 120k for Iridium spark plugs.
