I’m a game developer. I have watched modern AAA Titles launch with DLSS on by default. I like DLSS when it’s used to squeeze more performance out of games that already run well but that’s not what’s happening. Instead, Unreal 5 pushes developers to use one click “solutions” that reduces the amount of work required, even at the cost of massive performance hits and DLSS with frame gen is the one click “solution” to solving the performance hits. This creates a worse experience for gamers and I’m not on board. Editing my comment to clarify my opinion. Not all developers misuse these new technologies. When used properly, games look great and run well. But most AAA studios focus on maximizing profit margins. It’s very easy to get rid of the people whose jobs it is to optimize, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars, and instead turn on nanite, Lumen, and DLSS. This means gamers get a worse experience.
@abecx13 күн бұрын
I highly disagree, I as well am a developer for over 20 years. What unreal engines and dlss features do is free up time to for dev to focus on mechanics and not performance. People have NEVER bought a video game for the graphics, its not 1995 anymore. People want invigorating gameplay with unique fun. There is a reason every single Valve game is successful and its not because of graphics. Nintendo pumps out amazing games with the worst graphics. Zelda was cell shaded and sold millions of copies. Name a single game that people purchased because the performance of it was so smooth and the framerates were so high. You're speaking from a developer perspective and not from a consumer perspective. The average consumer wants god of war level immersion, not tomb raider on max settings to be smooth.
@GameDevyn13 күн бұрын
@ totally agree to disagree heh. I’ve bought many games for graphics. Especially half life 2. I realize I’m not the norm but assuming everyone buys things for the same reason isn’t right. Never is an absolute word that I think is extreme, I agree it’s not necessarily common. Folks gushed about the graphics of Witcher 3 and later Cyberpunk. Same with red dead redemption and grand theft auto. I think tools are great, and I see DLSS as a tool. I think it’s being misused but that doesn’t mean I find it useless. Regardless, I appreciate your perspective!
@Syntaxoutofmind13 күн бұрын
Yeah, I was annoyed by the stance, "It's here to stay". So, you seriously want to tell me, I will never play a game with nice graphics, even on low with reasonable fps in native resolution ever again? Anyone who experiments with DLSS and Frame Gen a bit will clearly see all the artifacts, flickering, tearing and blurriness of the games. How is this acceptable? People already have forgotten how games looked before all the upscaling and multiplying frames.
@sycronxiv13 күн бұрын
@@Syntaxoutofmind I agree with the head comment tbh. Many players forget just how much computing power was needed to render older games, especially with techniques like edge smoothing. SSAA in particular was incredibly demanding, and while it produced great visuals, it came at a high performance cost. DLAA is a good step forward because it leverages AI to deliver high-quality results without the heavy resource drain of traditional methods like SSAA. As for the use of DLSS and Frame Generation, they can be fantastic for boosting performance, especially in well-optimized games. But the auto-implementation in engines like UE5; automatic optimizations don't always consider the best balance between visual quality and performance, and they can lead to inconsistent results. Developers should find a balance between those methods, and not make it the new norm. It should be additional only, not a mandatory thing.

Guys, I'm begging you. when testing the new gpus, compare the latency accordingly. If the game is running at 24 fps and your turn on frame gen and it hits 200fps, you need to compare the latency with the game running at 200fps with lower settings without frame gen. If you compare a 50ms 24fps with a 38ms 200fps, even though 200 fps should have been 5ms, nvidia will get away with it again. We need to introduce another indicator other than fps, because if there's only one, they are going to sacrifice everything to improve it. You have the power to be one of the bastions of gaming, so please be it.
@TamasKiss-yk4st14 күн бұрын
Good point, i also concerned about that, because to able to gen those fake frames it means the real frame actually was rendered, just not displayed on the screen, because the GPU just starting to generate those fake frames between the 2 real frames, alias a significant delay will appear what is similar to input lag.
@dpb2214 күн бұрын
Nvidia is going to get away with it anyway. Their gaming division is a rounding error compared to the AI sales, so if everyone hates what is going on and they don't sell, they just leave the space and count their money. But they will sell because everyone buys Nvidia cards. And why? Because their software is better. The same software everyone is bitching about - "its generating fake frames!"
@jorismak14 күн бұрын
If you care about the (potential) performance of a card, framegen should not be included. If you talk about the gaming experience, framegen is something to include, but yes, including latency is a very good thing then (but also the number of output frames, because that's what framegen is for, reach those crazy high framerates modern monitors can do, but with AAA games).

While I like having DLSS, even if most people have it on, I dislike having it on for benchmarks. The point of the benchmark is to compare the relative compute power of multiple devices, and for that you want as few variables between them as possible, that way you don't have to account for a bunch of different use cases, and your benchmarks can more easily stay relevant as new software features come out.
@quarantinefox14 күн бұрын
That's only a valuable benchmark if people are using the GPU that way. If they're using, or at least open to using upscaling and frame gen, users need indicators of that performance. As for the quote of 80% gamers turning on DLSS, it's probably true, but the problem is DLSS and Frame Generation are technically two different things, but Nvidia Marketing puts them under the same name. Most likely there is 80% of the gamers that use DLSS (myself included), but amount of gamers that use Frame Generation is wayyyy less than that, to begin with, it was only available to 40 series GPU's, so I would say anywhere up to 15% (at best) of people maybe used it. Personally I would most of the time use DLSS because of good anti-aliasing and sharp image (or DLAA when available), but I would not use Frame Generation because of the latency, artifacts and sometimes even losing that DLSS sharpness.

10:10 I think it's more likely to use DLSS with a 4090 than a 2060. Let me explain. Someone with a 2060 card likely games at 1080p, and DLSS starts to look pretty bad at 1080p, and he likely won't need it anyway. Someone with a 4090 though? They likely game at 4K and need the extra frames, and you won't notice DLSS much at 4K anyway, so why not? Extra performance for minimal loss in image quality. Someone with a 4090 gaming at 1440p definitely won't need DLSS though.

yup, glad someone actually sees who DLSS was "aimed" for. its not for the low end users, hell low end users yes will game at 1080p but they would gain more from changing in game settings than using DLSS (which can still be CPU bottlenecked) which for a lot of low end systems is more than likely the case where DLSS just wouldnt actually net them any gains. DLSS was there trash attempt at making 4K playable without having the need to constantly one up each generation by huge margins. do people seriously forget what Nvidia said when turing launched in regards to Pascal? flat out admits nvidia wont ever make a generation leap like they did from 900 series to 10xx series and thats held true even with 50xx series vs 40xx series

DLSS frame gen is a frame smoother. It takes two real performance frames and inserts educated guess frames in between them. The performance frames can be slow and choppy or faster with less chop, but the inserted frames from the software are not going to improve the performance (performance meaning movement from pixel A to pixel B). FPS is not a guage or marker for performance and latency. This is not to say it won't look better, it will but that's not the point. A slow moving game is still going to look slow regardless of the smoothness.

16:30 ish - You're misunderstanding what "fake frame" means. Reusing an old, previously rendered frame is not a fake frame. In fact, that is a clever way to improve performance without any fake frames. A fake frame is any frame that is extrapolated off of, but not directly rendered by, actual, physical game data. I think the way that async repro handles the problem of smoothness is about as perfect as a solution can be because there is minimal work done to fill in the edges of the screen as you turn that is rapidly rectified by a new frame being rendered. The argument "all frames are fake frames" is a bad faith argument that doesn't understand the point being made by the people calling AI-generated frames fake. By having the majority of your framerate AI-generated, you are now only using the game data as a reference for how things should look, not producing an image that actually looks as the game data dictates it should. If AI were perfect, it wouldn't matter, but we all know it's not. Nvidia using it as an exclusive selling point of the 50 series is also highly problematic considering programs like Lossless Scaling exist that provide similar benefits that are available on all GPU's and in all games (as far as I'm aware, at least.) Sure, Nvidia's solution is probably a bit better than Lossless Scaling. That said, if you prefer AI-generated high framerates over native rendering, you won't care about what little difference there is between the two, I promise you. If GPU's are not being compared 1:1 with frame generation tech, the comparison is useless and needs to have alarms blared on it and attention brought to the alternatives. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, developers are no longer optimizing games properly and are instead relying on frame generation and upscaling to deliver overall worse-looking games than we used to have at worse performance. This is what the "fake frame" argument is about.
@sscillitani13 күн бұрын

My issue with the Frame gen and RTX 50** performance claims is that generally, higher FPS leads to higher motion fluidity and lower latency. This is the goal of higher FPS but instead this MFG stuff creates higher motion fluidity and higher latency. It is no longer increasing two things that traditionally makes more frames better. Now more frames may not be better in all cases. Frames now do not win games, as nVidia has said, because using MFG in competitive games will not be better.

All these are very rough numbers, but pretty close given some napkin math and several sources for data. What I'm implying here is that Intel should have just made their CPUs bigger, and a little bit more efficient, each generation. Then they could have stayed on 14nm another decade, at least. Really though, eventually we are going to reach the point that they can't get bigger. Then, these types of "fake frames" will be the only way forward. Isn't the argument of needing a justification for the "software update" only valid for those who already have a 40 series card ? In which case I don't understand why most would even consider to upgrade ? If you're at any other generation prior to 40 you're just paying the same as you would for an upgrade to the 40 series but are getting something better.

40:49 the audio quality of sticking a speakerphone up to a microphone is really surprising to me 😮

They're using proper studio mic's... How do you thing electric guitars are recorded lol. They just smack a mic in front of an amp (aka giant speaker)

as an architect, imo, these are fake frames. these numbers only represent gaming, not 3d modeling, not rendering, not real world performance.
@BoobLaser42013 күн бұрын
DLSS runs on tensor cores, so if your software (3D modeling, rendering) can use those tensor cores, you get extra performance out of them.

Hey Linus, to your note on pinball machines as an enthusiast some of the most fun cabinets you can find are The Pirates of the Caribbean by Stern and the Star Wars Trilogy Edition cabinet by Sega. I’ve owned both along with some others and these are by far my most well loved machines. Keep an eye out for them in your local area as shipping costs can be quite absurd

Wow I find the low views on the RGB Mini LED TV really interesting. Linus was like "Low views, guess we'll do a funny VLOG where it falls over or smth. If that's what it takes for ppl to learn about cool tech" - I literally didn't watch the video because it was like "Woooww my TV is trash compared to this" with an over the top thumbnail. If the title was "This TV is using RGB mini LED Backlight" I would have immediately watched it, because Hell Yeah that's fking cool! Really interesting to see the dissonance in what I (and probably a bunch of the technical audience) would click on vs what the vast majority of the more casual audience (that is responsible for the majority of the views) would click on

53:42 an absolutely niave and terrible take. They have failed to perform even rhe most basic preparation for this. ( The winds are named, they happen annually) The Palisades reservoir was empty prior to this, fire fighting budgets were cut, and basic Forest management has been deemed harmful to the environment.

The Synology 1522+ can be upgraded with a 10Gb/s card. With all drive bays occupied you can expect steady transfer speed around 550MB/s, sometimes slightly faster. Of course you'd need 10Gb support on any device interfacing with it to make sense.

For the Pinball decision I would recommend that you set up Visual Pinball and try a bunch of tables to see which ones you like. You can get it working in VR with VPX and it's a lot of fun! Second, you should know that pinballs break down **A LOT**. It's a big machine full of wires that wiggle and break as people knock the machine about. You have a lot of talented staff who can likely fix the kind of problems you'll see, but you should factor in their time into your decision. Pinballs are awesome, but someone will be fixing it constantly. As for specific tables, the Star Trek TNG table is my absolute fave. It looks great, has lots of multiball modes, and great voice acting from the original cast. It's also very clear with what to do to get points, with clearly defined missions lighting up the ramps you need, where as a lot of other tables you're not really sure what you should shoot at.
