Are you still gaming at 1080P in 2025? I came across some surprising results that made me seriously question why more gamers haven’t adopted higher resolutions like 1440P. It might be time to rethink your setup! With advancements in upscaling technologies like Nvidia DLSS, AMD FSR, and even Intel XeSS, gaming at 1440P is now more accessible than ever-even on older GPUs like the RTX 2080. In this video, I break down recent benchmarks, gameplay comparisons, and industry trends that show why 1440P is becoming the sweet spot for PC gaming. I look at the evolution of gaming monitors, pricing trends, and the impact of new technologies on performance and image quality. We’ll also touch on how advancements in hardware and game development have made higher resolutions far more accessible-even on budget or older GPUs. Whether you're looking for sharper visuals, smoother performance, or better value from your gaming monitor, this video covers everything you need to know!

Exactly, this is exactly the reason I downgraded from 27 inch 1440p 75 hz to a 24 inch 1080p 180 hz and it's a game changer. I get the clarity of vision and all, but I bought my 2080 super last year for around 200 USD (i live in Chile) and this monitor downgrade automatically put like 5 years more on this GPU, If I could upgrade to say a 3080 ti and a 144hz 4k monitor sure I would (an a CPU that doesn't bottleneck) but for that price I can actually build 2 PCs and give one to my friend to have someone to play with 🤣🤣🤣

Stop these L takes 🤣, you can literally run a 3060 on 1440P dude stop hardstucking on a tiny monitor size with FHD, it's becoming ancient at this point. 1440P 144hz monitors are becoming affordable and close to the FHD ones and with a negligible performance hit compared to the lack of detail on 1080P. In the 50 series even a 5060 at $250 will run everything on 1440P with 0 problems except for VRAM, 5070 at $550 would be perfect. If you wanna stay in your comfort zone then stay but don't pull others with you because a month ago I was on 1080P believing gullible things like this but when I upgraded to 4k recently I regret everything and now I want to re-play all the games I love because of the amount of details and sharpness I've been missing out on. There's literally no logic in staying on 1080P except if you just flat don't give a shit about improving your experience.

1080p isn't going anywhere. Its not actually more accessible to game at 1440p for most FPS gamers especially those with constrained budgets. The absolute majority of people have hardware 2 or more generations old and that's indisputable. You can play at 1440p with a 2080 Ti but its a vastly inferior experience, even with upscaling. You're better off upscaling from 720p to 1080p. 1080p will still be the leading monitor resolution for the next 5-10 years.

It depends on what your scaling rate is set to. Say for example you are using performance DLSS settings to 1440p. So 50% usually. At 50% scaling, you're going from 1280×720 to 1440p. I feel like this is a first world problem way of looking at things. I live in SEA and there are a lot of people who game in SEA. Right now, 1440p monitors regardless of refresh rate consistently cost over $180 American, and the really good ones go for nearly $350. In a place where the minimum wage is about $200-$250, that is way above the price range of most people gaming here. Some good 1080p 100-165 hz monitors meanwhile go for $100-$130 which are much easier to stomach. I think that's why 1080p is still up there.

Exactly, I got a 1080p monitor 6 years ago and it's still going super strong. At the distance I'm sitting from the screen it fills nearly my entire view. Sure a 1440p might be that little bit more filling and wide and perhaps more detailed. But why do away with something I'm personally already really happy with and then have to search for better hardware to push FPS? The added gain in gaming experience is just not that big, especially if you like to replay older titles like me.

@@borgirlol I see the difference in 144 and 165. You live in your perspective. You're assuming that you understand how other people see gaming monitors. You cant see it but other can. Yes, I most certainly can see that difference. I played on a 1080 144hz overclockable to 165. It would often default back to 144 and I would have to enable 165 again. Because of this.. i had 20 blind tests where I would play and then realized it isn't what it usually is.. go back and check and sure enough I was always right. When it was already 165.. I knew. And really.. it isn't even about having great eyes. High speed motion shows up(to me) as a cascading frames stacked on top of each other. I am not even claiming that I was ever good enough at fps games to benefit from more than 144 but I could easily tell that the distance between the cascaded images was less when the high hz was enabled. 144 to 165 is 15%. People overclock CPUs and GPUs for 5 % performance. The difference is quite large actually. Probably harder to tell between 240 and 360 but I bet I could do it.

I have theories why 1080p displays are still popular: 1. 1080p displays are DIRT CHEAP on Amazon, like $99 for a 1080 tv. A new tv for $99, anyone 40+ would have thought that to be impossible at one point in their younger life. 2. There are now a lot of older gamers, 1/5 pc gamers are Gen X and we are starting to get old. While I predominately game on my 4k large screen tv, my monitor that I use at my home desk and sometimes game on was a 28" Asus 4k monitor. It was starting to get harder to read articles etc for me and turning down the resolution makes images & word pixelated. Turning up the font size in the browser breaks some websites. I just got a new Asus 32" 1080 170hz monitor and it's like I have new eyes. Text is MUCH easier to see and the extra real-estate helps too. Just my 2 cents.

buying a 1080p monitor in 2025 still makes MORE sense than a 1440p monitor here's why. - 1080p monitors come in smaller form factors like 20-24'' meanwhile it's hard getting a 1440p monitor under 27''. I find 27 inch too big for a screen that is a right up to your face - 1080p is the universal standard for windows file manager, the desktop environment and any browser. Using 1440p and 4k often comes with scaling issues and makes the UI harder to utilize. - native content is better on 1080p. Most if not almost all anime and TV series are in 720p and 1080p and there is zero benefit having 50% more pixels waste energy. - You mention that a RTX 2080 can be enough for 1440p gaming yet you use DLSS to upscale. Not to mention that that card is still 500 USD new. - Most people rather pay half the price for a 1080p monitor, pay around 100-150 USD for a video card and build a budget system. Forget about comfortable 1440p gaming for under 1000 USD. - I rather game at 1080p than upscaled 1440p with more latency, artifacts and ghosting. HRR 1080p is vastly better than 60 fps 1440p. I'm not disagreeing with 1440p being viable for gamers nowadays and the increased pixel density is noticeable, but people just prefer higher refresh rates and cheaper systems. Heck a lot of gamers can't even reach 60 on 1080p.

@ Yes but 1440p isn't supported by any media other than KZbin. Everything has to either upscale or downscale and it's not 1:1 unless it's 720p or like 6K resolution, of which 720p is bad and 6K has no media.

I can say that you're wrong... you don't need 1000 USD to play 1440p confortably, check some radeon gpus like rx 7700 xt or 7800 xt. They aren't that much expensive like nvidia ones and can give you great 1440p experience, that res isn't that much expensive as you think it is... it's slowly becoming a standard resolution for gaming because how accessible it becomes. Nobody forces you to buy huge 1440p monitor, 27 inches in most cases are perfect for visual fidelity and even paired with even weaker gpus from that I said it can get the job done. Just avoid newest games like indiana or alan wake and you will be good.

The premise is idiotic to begin with since it really depends on the way you use the monitor and whether or not you are comfortable moving your head around while using the pc. For instance in my case after all lot of testing during the bug I found that 24" 1080p was the best resolution/size for the way I use my pc. I sit around 60cm away from the monitor (around 2') and at that distance I barely ever notice the individual pixels, which is the best for clarity for me. I tested monitors in 1080p, 1440p and 4K at different sizes, from 49" and 24" and 24" was by far the most comfortable for me to be able to look at the entirety of the screen without having to move my head around too much. Which may not be an issue if you don't use your pc for long, but becomes a big issue if you tend to spend a long time looking at the monitor. Also, you could argue 24" 1440p would work better in that case, but after testing I didn't notice any difference between the two due to the ppi going beyond what I could reliably perceive, so there was no reason for me to go with 1440p when I could choose a higher frame rate instead.

Can you guess why pro FPS players use 24” 1080p monitor 360hz or 480hz? Do you think they doing because they’re cheap and don’t know that 1440p are cheap enough now and they can afford one or might be another reason? What do you think?

Consoles were doooomed when they tried to shift from 1080p to 4k. They'rent capable of handling 1440p with AAA titles. And nvidia chose to make 8gb vram gpu's and make everything calculated on the fly instead of giving more vram for game devs. So any dev needs to use "calculate on the fly" from nvidia. Amd looked at that and followed nvidia with worse strategies but cheaper prices. Plz read about nvidia SDK and strategies so you can get the full picture. I am just highlighting here.

1080p is not dead. on 24-26 inch screens its pixel density at common desk based viewing distance is high enough to create optical smoothness. on larger screens, it is lacking though. 1080p is also wildly accessible for the entry market up to medium specs modern pc's with high or beast pc's with top tier framerates. the only big issue with 1080p is many modern games using sub resolution rendering, bad taa and build in upscaling instead of more effective but more fine tuning requiring rendering techniques. the shitty non native& blured modern rendering looks especialy ass on 1080p displays, and looks like 1080p on 1440p and up. dldsr downsampling of these games on 1080p makes them look like proper 1080p is supposed too. or using lossless scaling 1:1 as an image cleanup tool. makes the 1080p of modern smudge fest games look as sharp, detailed and smooth as on the better anti aliased and cleaner rendered older titles

Easy answer why 1080p still being dominant because up to 27” for gaming there is very few difference on image quality if the panel of the monitor is good and for anything not gaming in less than 32” the things look too small at 1440p plus having a triple monitor game setup you need 3 same resolution so the price triples then. I’ve bought a 27” 1440p monitor and ended up selling it after some months because I got so tired of it, it even gave me eye strain, also the upscaling excuse is not good, for competitive games is not good and even then most games to me look better at native 1080p high than upscaled 1440p and 4K, I bought another 240hz 1080p 27 for the money I got from the 1440p one, I have 3 240 hz now and I’m much more happy, and going over 27” is not good for me, for me is the perfect size for gaming, bigger I wouldn’t see everything on the screen and also cannot fit bigger monitor on my room.

Try playing Silent Hill 2 remake on a 3060. I need to upgrade my CPU to match the GPU, but hardware has become crazy expensive now. I do get some big fps drops with my 5800x, but even a upgrade to a 7600 is about $800. When things get more expensive, people tend to not upgrade, which only hurts the PC gaming industry. 1080p is the best price/performance at the moment. AMD and Intel need to bring their prices down if they want people to buy more of their new hardware. Heaps of people are just sticking with their AM4/1080p system.

I have to dislike because there is misinformation about resolution when using DLSS. I still don't get it why is it so hard to learn how DLSS works. It does not magically gives you performance (in fact, it takes good chuck of it), it lowers render resolution, which means, it reduces quality of the image (in case of 1440p, it goes down to like 960p). If developers cared enough for their games not to suck, UE4+ games would have higher quality image than DLSS at lower performance cost if they spend 5-10 minutes configuring TAA and sharpening (2 out of 3 core things DLSS is doing). "TM model" looks good, but that is something every UE4 (especially UE4.19+) game can achieve if you alter game memory and give yourself permissions to use console and change some TAA settings because developers are not doing it. Because developers are not doing their job properly, there is almost no game from current TAA era where I have seen image quality improvement out of the box (means I don't have to change any engine settings) on 1440p monitor over 1080p. Older games (before TAA) and work environment (if scaling is left at 100%) benefit a lot from higher resolutions. Decent gaming 1440p monitors in EU start at about 250 EUR (regular prices), decent 1080p cost under 150. Just because there are cheaper monitors with high refresh rate, it does not mean they can transition colors faster than 60hz panel, which is important for actually getting high refresh experience. While not all colors transition at the same speed (so there should be some improvement over 60hz panel), it still won't matter if you buy VA panel (Samsung G3 for example) that have 25ms+ (40fps-) transition time for darker colors.

Yea as many have said here in the comments your main premise is garbage. It's not the monitor but instead it is the lack of affordable and available GPU's to drive higher resolutions at performance levels required by most gamers. The GPU manufactures, NVIDIA in particular, have abandoned and grifted gamers for years now which is why the large majority of gamers are operating on generations old GPU's. Until the situation changes 1080P is going to continue to be pervasive.

I have gotten so much heat for saying that you leverage the additional pixels of your monitor to allow upscaling to put it the work and give you the best possible image quality even with a slow gpu. This idea of "I don't want to upgrade my monitor because my GPU isn't that strong" is ill informed at best and WRONG imo. Even if for some reason you hate upscaling(dlss is simply nuts quality today) then you'll have better real estate on the desktop apps and your monitor will do a simple upscaling to fit 1080p to a 1440 or 4k screen and it will still look better than 1080p. How is this controversial? Get that res guys. It's always worth it! 4k 144(6950 XT to 4070 TiSuper) for 2years now. Came from 1080p 144(GTX 970 to GTX 1080). 4070 TiSuper is the first new GPU I bought after my 6950 starting to restart by PC after a few months of use. I got fked on that.

With rapidly improving integrated graphics solutions from AMD and Intel, discrete GPUs will soon no longer be needed to run games at native 1080p.

I am surprised by RTX3060 being the top used GPU, when you could get a used 1080Ti for less and have a much better GPU overall.

@@kuma-bw1we The sad part is that 24" OLED is super easy to make but they are milking TN / IPS still.

I have a 180hz 1080 IPS 24" , and in Red Dead 2 and other games i can see aliasing, and if i use TAA the image gets blury , and even using DLSS quality to remove them , its no 100% perfect , so the only solution is going to a 27" 1440p monitor.

so I got three monitors recently, all 1080p, one i gifted to a friend, ain't no way I'm paying 200e for one, especially when I'm running with a 3060, id much rather mod and make the games look better than have that bit of extra resolution, nd before someone asks, yup played games at 1440p and 4k, but I still find no reason for it personally

People might be playing at 1080p still because most gaming laptops are 1080p and they are a large portion of the market. Also, with the economy the way it is right now, most do not have much disposable income to spend on expensive PC parts.
