NX1 STILL has features that modern cameras can't compete with. Watch and see...

In this video, I talk about the Samsung NX1. A mirrorless camera released years ago that still has features that make it a relevant standout today. If you've ever tried the NX1, you'd know that when it was first released, it was a bit of a struggle to use for video, thanks to its "ahead of its time" codec. But for filming today, the efficiency of the codec mixed with the capabilities of the camera make it a real powerhouse for modern day uses. Check out this video to see just a couple of examples of why I still appreciate the camera as much as I do.

I have during 3 years made over 400 videos on KZbin with my NX1:s. The firmware updates made it superior with gamma DR and DIS. So with the S lenses I have dual stabilization and can use it handheld.

Still using NX1. Love it! Fine ergonomics, perfect hybrid camera. I am using him for professional photography and filming with anamorphic lenses.

Unmatched 4k quality footage and colors in my opinion. Very very good DR, lot of people said the DR was not good because of the levels badly interpreted. Photo is great too. Maybe the best hybrid camera. However, the lack of IBIS, lack of lenses (even if the 16-50S and 50-150S are stellar) and the high rolling shutter are an issue for me. For now, I use the A7 III for photo and the GH5 for video.

Havent been impressed, but maybe we aren't using it correctly. Tried to use it for streaming a church service and find the auto focus is unstable and cant seem to get a decent lighting solution for it. We also cant seem to get the full screen to show and there is always an "auto" icon on the feed. You forgot to mention the 6.5k sensor that is cropped to 4k, which is part of the reason why this camera shoots so sharply.

I hope Samsung can jump back into the camera market and out-spec everybody else again. Unlike those Japanese cartels who are constantly crippling/colluding on specs, Samsung is also the only one who has the computation technology to make cameras that can compete with the smartphone cameras.

Yes I own this baby. I work in the film industry VFX department. You will be blown away at what i am capable of shooting with it. Nothing else comes close to it.....yes i shoot stills and WOW.......Quality all the way to the bank. It may be old now but still my first choice.

The nx1 is the gold standard. It is still light years ahead. The market is just now catching up. Three years later. I am checking ebay to grab a nx1 to upgrade from my nx30.

LOVE the NX1. I got this as an 'interim' camera a few years ago , and since then have got a second body and a few lenses. it's great for video, and for stills. have used it on a 2 camera mini doc shoot and the shots are amazing. still holds it's own in 2019. thinking of hacking to get the 100MB/s but haven't really needed it. shame they stopped making it! :)

My speculation is that the camera business as a whole has been nothing but declining for years, mostly due to cell phone cameras. So why mess in a saturated industry that's declining? That's my theory, but we can debate that all day! There are valid arguments against that theory as well.

I recently got an NX20 and I was amazed at how future state-of-the-art it was when it was first introduced. It’s still amazing nowadays. I started collecting several lenses and again I’m amazed at the quality of the Samsung glass. I even got an NX100 to get the ‘rangefinder’ style, for the fun of it. And now I’ve got my heart set on getting an NX1, but the prices I’ve seen resemble Leica level craziness. But I won’t give up. Nice vid

I'd still like some answers as to why Samsung left the ILC camera game. In my opinion they had great technology and their sensors were excellent. I had received a NX500 in a promotion and was impressed with the entire package. Then a few months later, they shriveled up. No announcement or anything. They'd be at the top of the mirrorless market if they would have kept going.

Back when I was in the market for a new camera I really wanted the NX1 after owning and been super impressed by the NX3000. In the end I didn’t go with it for the simple fact that by then Samsung had basically abandoned their cameras altogether.

Hi Magnus. Great video! I just got my NX1 recently. I wanted to ask though, am I able to use focus peaking on the NX1 with lenses from other camera manufacturers?

Yes. It's not immediately evident, but when the camera is in video mode, I think you simply hit the down directional button and it will turn on. I don't have the camera in from of me now, but I think that's it. If not, try one of the other directions. It works!

I am primarily a photo shooter.However,this cameras is intriguing. Is it a worthy used camera contender? Saw one in the $1000 range without a lens. Does Samsung still support the camera? Is there a newer Samsung camera that I might consider?

As a photography camera, it's amazing, especially the 15 fps burst shots, and the sharpness in our best lenses. (I work for Samsung). Samsung launched the NX500 after this one, which is a camera that's one a step down from the NX1. The Samsung cameras have done a great job maintaining their value, despite no new cameras since then. As for support, I'm not really sure if they still support it, or will much longer. In my opinion, it is a worthy used camera contender if you don't intend to fully adopt the system as your main system, since support is important.

I have a a6300 with a sigma 16mm lens I’m a landscape, life style, food and animals photographer is it a bad idea to get this camera as a back up camera?

For photography, this camera is great for food and for fast moving animals, thanks to its 15fps raw photo taking capabilities. However, for landscape photography, though you will pick up a lot of detail in the photos, the dynamic range might leave something to be desired. The color science of the camera is pretty nice, but leans mostly towards the over saturated side. Getting lenses might also be expensive for this camera as well, and its discontinued. I'd look to just pick up another Sony for your particular needs. Im sure you can find an excellent full frame a7rii for a considerable, if not, cheaper price than the nx1. Good luck.

The photo is amazing. From my experience, it is better than the sony a6300/6500 24mp image. Hard to quatifiy, it just looks very rich color and a lot of details. what I feel disapoointed is the video dynamic range. Very poor. The sony a6300/6500 in cine 2/4 mode has clear advantage in dr. That is the main reason I sold it and stick with sony.

im super late to this video but I wanted to buy my first camera and im considering going for the NX1. now I've used the Sony A7iii and I can't afford that at the moment but I think that the NX1 would be the best step. Does anyone have any kind of advice? I was going to purchase a Canon 60D but it got sold/

I'd steer clear of the NX1. The price for the camera is pretty steep at this point, and the lenses are now hard to find, unfortunately. For a good APS-C Camera, I recommend the Canon M50, and it's much less expensive. I will admit though, the quality of the NX1 is superior to the M50.

And just fyi on the Facebook market place I bought my nx1 used with a pelican type case, extra battery with charger, SD card and 3 samsung lenses 18-55 , 50-200mm and I forget the last one maybe a 20mm non zoom lense for 1000$ flat

The Nikon Z was a disappoint and A7iii isn't exactly amazing either. To be honest the new cameras are only a minor step above NX1 the biggest difference being IBIS and better dynamic range. If someone could hack NX1 for a slightly better dynamic range it would instantly have another 5 years of life. Having a gimbal would make up for lack of ibis so really just need a dynamic range fix.

I was planning to move all to samsung for mirrorless after years of experience with Canon but now it is only my backup camera cause I only have the inferior models to nx1. Nx1 is still a fortune in used market here in my country. If only samsung would make a new flagship and rejoin the game which offers consumers such crap like eos rp and nikon z etc.

I wonder that too. I don't know for sure. One thing I can say is that if you are filming and you get the white balance correct, the image is STUNNING and the quality is unmatched, even by my Canon full frame cameras. However, if the white balance and exposure is not perfect...ughhh....you get a not-so-nice image that's difficult to grade.

Too bad there is no software hack to get 60fps out of it, dynamic range and low light could have been a bit better. Because of abandonment by Samsung some quirks happen every now and then.

But think you don't know anything about the Samsung NX1 This camera is amazing, and even now there are very experienced professionals who use this camera even for commercial productions. So look a bit more to what the Samsung NX1 really offers in quality, and you will be amazed by an almost 6 year old camera .....
