PSVR2 on PC without Adapter - 1st Contact VR Hardware preview

Today the PSVR2 was shocked into live in the PC. Here I share the set-up, all requirements and how, if like many you cannot buy a PC adapter, you can play PSVR2 on PC without one. Let's don our helmets and spin up some games in this 1st Contact VR preview.

@@Robert.Lachowski550 You can play any game watching a virtual 2d screen if that's what you mean, but Dreams has a proper virtual reality mode for PSVR 1, they simply didn't even care to upgrade that to PSVR 2.

Mike, keep up the great work. Someone from my era of gaming (started in the late 70s). The type of knowledgeable bloke I could have a couple of pints with and talk games and gaming tech. Tried many times to adapt to VR. From PSVR to Quest and VR2 but I still can't overcome motion issues. I returned PSVR2 but it's a great device...and on PC it would be a no brainer with the titles on that platform.

Many of the reference AMD RX6900 / RX7900 series GPUs have the virtual link port.

I was excited when I read that you don't need the adapter for newer AMD cards. But then I learned my particular model doesn't have the port. Not the reference model. So adapter it is. Lucky I managed to order one.

@@sawdust8691 Yes its reference cards only unfortunately, this is probably why Sony have not mentioned that the PSVR2 will actually work properly with Virtual Link Port equipped GPUs, if they had mentioned it, lots of folks would be meaning at them, so they released the adapter that everyone can use.

Only thing that was a hassle was the setup and then SteamVR default the resolution to almost 4000x4000 per eye. My 4080 was crying when I first launched HL:A. Adjusted to 68% which gives full pixel density and played HL:A for about 90 minutes with 0 issues. Looks much better than my Quest 2 and I don't find having a wire a deal breaker. I still have yet to try pancake lenses, so I'll remain ignorant and just daily drive the PSVR2 for PCVR. The colors are really good and even without HDR it gets bright.

People are getting way too worked up on no eye tracking or head haptics..... When pretty much none of the steamVR games even support it lol. Theres like one game with eye tracking.

Even some of the 7000 AMD cards still have the USB-C port, but by the looks of it mostly the reference cards and the third party manufacturers are excluding them in their versions.

It would be interesting to see if there is a performance difference between PSVR2 and Quest 3 on the same PC with the same game settings. If you don't have a Quest, then just what kind of performance you can get with PSVR2.

No there wouldn't be performance differences cuz they're both running on the same pc with the same settings. They're would only be features exclusive to one or the other but no performance differences. You'll see the resolution difference between both sets lens but thats not performance, one just has better lens than the other.

​@@TheeThunderGod Not exactly 1:1 the same. The headsets run different resolution screens, the higher resolution screens will demand more from your setup. Especially worth considering if someone feels the need to increase the output resolution to remove any screen-door effect, too.

That is incorrect, as the person asking the question stated, the PC needs to compress each and every frame before sending it to the Quest3 this absolutely does add overhead to the performance. Modern encoding techniques have come a long way but there is still an unavoidable overhead. Im still waiting for my PSVR2 adapter so i cannot give exact details for this scenario, but in my tests with the Quest3 vs HP Reverb G2 the performance hit was anywhere between a couple FPS and 20 FPS depending on the game.

You will definitely see a slight performance gain on a direct headset due to not needing to compress every single frame. The PSVR2 will also have zero compression artefacts which will give a massive improvement to graphical fidelity, especially when viewing fine detail at mid-long range. The only benefit the quest3 has is the lens but i think the OLED and compressionless visuals will make up for that

I don't believe the PC adapter needs that high of a bandwidth USB3 connection, because the vast majority of the bandwidth being used on the PS5 is the video signal, which is being carried by the displayport cable on the PC adapter. So the USB portion of it will actually only need a very small amount of bandwidth.

My example here was using the virtuallink cable, so all data is going through that in this video. I am testing the adapter currently and have both USB2 and 3 within that to confirm.

I’ve read that usb 2.0 ports work better for having less interference with BT adapters, also using an extension cable.

Helpful video, I had two 20 series RTX cards back when but only have a 3080 TI and 4090 now so no virtuallink access but the information is valuable nonetheless so I'll be refering people to this video for that aspect of connecting the PSVR2 via this method, cheers!

Correction, My 7900 XT has a USB-C port and the PSVR2 works with it just fine. No need for any adapters.

@nxgamer I have 2 display ports. Does it matter if I unplug my second monitor and connect it to that port? Will it detect the port the adapter is connected to and load the game into that? Would I have to enable it in NVIDIA as a second display?

So my controllers got paired to my pc through the psvr2 app my controllers are connected and on but steam vr is saying they're off when they aren't the 2 controller symbols are grayed out 🙄

Upon launching HalfLife Alyx I see the same screen at 7:15 timestamp and nothing happens after that, on launching game loading screen comes and just immidiatly prompt to press trigger flashes and this screen comes. Nothing after that. Please advice some solution.

From what im hearing the adapter is having weord issues as well. I think the best thing to do for pc vr is saving up for a vr headset like vive or index. Pricey yes, but worth it. Psvr2 is amazing on ps5 and crystal clear. However, unless they make fixes and fully supoort the adapter, it might just not be worth the trouble truing to use it for pc.

I am almost sure it is not, as without getting through that section the PSVR2 app will not get to setup game space. Meaning steam VR cannot start and you cannot select anything.

I got a Strix G17 with an RTX 4070 laptop. It has 2 thunderbolt type c connections, but it doesn't have DP. Before watching this video, I tried connecting my psvr2 to the type c ports and it did not work, I have the psvr2 adapter and will receive a DP to type C cable this Monday, I'm hoping it works otherwise I will have to exchange my laptop for a desktop with DP.

Simple answer if you have a pc to drive it psvr2 headset is better it has oled lenses that's all you need to know

I am working on a full review as noted in the video, but if you are using a PC connection and are happy to have wired, then PSVR2 is the better visual and feature option, largely, over the Metaquest 3. The metaquest 3 USP is the wireless choice which is not an option with PSVR2.

@@xionsolaris it has an OLED screen, not lenses. The lenses are fresnel and that kinda brings down the image quality as you need to find the tiny sweet spot so that the image is not blurry. Quest 3 has pancake lenses that have a much bigger sweet spot and provide a much clearer image, but they have an LCD screen. Sadly OLED screens can't be paired with pancake lenses for some brightness-related reason I'm too ignorant to explain. Solutions that pair OLED screens with better lenses already exist, but they are way too expensive right now.

Plugged mine into my rtx 2070 super and it detects nothing, but it works with ivy vr but that doesn't support the controllers

You need to uninstall the ivy VR drivers for it to work with Sony's drivers.

@AbrahamZX1 I uninstall the ivy drivers and got to the room setup but I had no pointers to click next, bought the tplink ub500 and still had the same problem, I ended up uninstalling graphics driver and reinstalled them and now it works. The only issue I have now is the right controller tracking isn't as good as the left.
