History is the ultimate judge. The year is now 2021. This Saudi PR campaign didn't survive 6 months if my recollection is correct. It's puzzling to me how Thomas Friedman still has an audience.

I respect Friedman and his point of view but here are they major flaws in my opinion. 1) Iran influence ONLY grew because of massive US foreign policy failures, ex invasion of Iraq, Iran had very little chance of having a great influence in Iraq for GOD's sake they fought each other for 10 YEARS with over A MILLION DEATHS. 2) Iran's influence in Afghanistan ONLY grew when disastrous US policies led Afghans and Taliban to play one power against the other, otherwise there is absolutely no link between Taliban and Al Qaeda and Iran. 3) Iran's influence exploded in SYRIA ONLY BECAUSE SAUDI QATAR UAE TURKEY EUROPE AND USA decided to back so called Syrian moderates when very rapidly the only real power in Syria were ISIS and Al Qaeda afliated groups. I can go on and on. In conclusion IRAN is absolutely not the current enemy in middle east. The reality is that the ONLY COUNTRY IN MIDDLE EAST whose majority population is "pro western or who really wants liberal type change are IRANIANS. So the only current sensible policy in middle east is to help peacefully push changes inside IRAN. Keep a stable Assad government is Syria. Stabilize Iraq and CONCENTRATE OF AFGHANISTAN which is about to blow up along with Pakistan. Iran has no intention and never had to go to war with Israel and every sensible Israeli knows that. But they are enemies yes, until something moves on the Palestinian question and then Iran is out of the conflict. Hezbollah is a REAL problem , not for Israel at all, but for Lebanon. No State should have an private Army inside a country period! End of story.

The truth is he's doing some good and a lot, A LOT of bad!!! But we can't escape the fact that Saudi Arabia is in a different universe, culturally! It's impossible to have moderation over there except by someone forcing it and taking chances! This guy is taking some bold and dangerous decisions for himself, his royal family and for the whole country! You have to understand that is not just the religious leaders who hold the country from progression! There is a huge following and support for old school traditions among the public! And unfortunately sometimes you just can't wait for people to figure it out! Somebody need to push it and he's pushing! I promise you one thing, the alternative for this guy is not good for anyone except the radicals. The west only looks at the surface of things and don't understand the complex geopolitical situation over there! However, he's corrupt to his core without a doubt! But we all know that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely! And he has absolute power. The major concern here is that he might not be smart enough to play his cards right and blow up the whole thing! Also he's encouraging some radical form of nationalism as an alternative to traditional religious "ism" and this is really bringing some ugly racist heat in the country (which wasn't very tolerant to begin with) specially toward foreign workers! Now everybody is blaming these workers for the scarcity of economical opportunities for the locals! He is trying to dispersing people's attention and create different enemies (Qatar, foreigners, Hothis, radicals, Iran...etc) and represent himself as the Messiah who's gonna save the day! But will he? Could he? We shall see!

As saudi, I do not agree with the misleading comments by Tom. MBS is not restoring islam but he is contributing to have people embrace more terror ideology. He jailed many moderate famous clerics because of no reason !! He is very aggressive with every one who has different opinion & you can imagine how that can lead to.
