NYC rent increase approved for rent-stabilized apartments

Millions of New Yorkers living in rent stabilized apartments will have to dish out more money each month after the Rent Guidelines Board pushed through controversial increases in a 5-4 vote. FOX 5 NY's Briella Tomassetti has the story.

These days there is more luxury condo construction, rather than rental construction. It is more profitable for a landlord, with rent stabilized/controlled tenants, to jack up the rent prices on market rate units and wait for the stabilized/controlled tenants to leave. After the tenants are gone, sell the property to a developer, and build condos.

Yes, if I go to live in Monaco and can’t afford to do so since rent is in the tens of thousands, why should I force the government to give me a handout? Poor people need to recognise they can’t afford to live in one of the most expensive city’s in the world. Even some rich people don’t live there. They need to use their brains and leave for cheaper accommodation. It’s much easier than forking out for the higher rents.

It gets you from one plane to another faster than walking and it allows people to live in a different place to where they work. We also have cars, if you’re feeling a little fancy. Neither of these options are limited to poor people, since they get transportation fee rebates to make it incredibly affordable to travel (~free)

Well then would not landlords costs have gone up as well? 15 plus % for municipalities, 3 percent for Mom and Pop how is that even fair?

The rent is going up because the government is involved, the landlords are in bed with them in their government programs that support ILLEGALS, with the money they give them, so the landlords hike the rent up. Rent should go up as much as NYC property taxes, heat and utilities and allow for building improvements. 3%-4% just keeps pace with rising costs. Shouldn't be much controversy there.

I met someone who would brag of their stabilized rent, saying “yeah I have a 3 bedroom for x amount, I’m so lucky my parents left me this apt” while at the same time was making much more money than me being in a management position for a corporate office. This person would buy designer this designer that, uber here uber there. I feel like most of these tenants are able to afford the 3-5% increase they just need to learn how to handle their expenses. It’s not fair to expect a low stabilized rent just to be able to buy Gucci bags, dior shoes, vacations all the time. Things are changing I saw my whole family from parents to uncles aunts go from a 700 rent to 2000 rent they just worked harder, and organized their expenses from most to least important. Yes it must suck to be accustomed to a 1200 stabilized rent now having to pay $100-300 extra per month but when you look at those #s that just means you have to cut down on how many times you go out to eat, have drinks, how many clothes and shoes you buy. That’s my respectful opinion.

I know ppl paying $5000 for a studio......I'm sorry I'm not complaining bcz I've been in my apt 46 years and it's a struggle but my rent is NOWHERE near $5000 and I have 3 bedrooms.....I paid rent fully on a fixed income during the pandemic and had communication with my landlord.....I ain't complaining about shit.....it is what it is....sending healing to ALL those people who are experiencing difficulties with this 🙏🏾....back to beans and rice , meat occasionally and more fasting.......I prefer eating beans and rice 🍚 at my OWN PLACE instead of curbside .....
