Why Is NYC Preparing Its Citizens for a Nuclear Attack?

Has New York City gone too far with this public service announcement? The city’s office of Emergency Management released this ad, telling residents what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. The host tells people to take cover indoors immediately. If you’re outside when the strike occurs, residents are advised to shower, bag their clothes. Then, pay attention to local media for information and next steps. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.

There is no credible nuclear threat against New York City or any city in the US. The ad is entirely to be alarmist and to garner media attention. To quote my favorite gun salesman: “The 1980s wants their foreign policy back.”

Accept your imminent demise with the knowledge that there's nothing you can do to prevent it. Maybe have a glass of wine and watch the world get vaporized. Unless you've got a fully stocked fallout shelter and a way to get there fast, it's best to think about this rationally. We saw what two nuclear bombs did to Japan in 1945, so we can only imagine how much more powerful the R&D guys have made them since then.

PSA and emergency training for nuclear attacks occurred in the 60’s because the government had serious concern that it was possible. No training or PSA’s have been pushed in the last 50-60 years because there hasn’t been concern. The fact that it’s being released now means that there’s concern.

I was living in China for a bit, about a decade ago, teaching english. One day, this siren went off outside, almost like a tornado warning. The tv was showing black & white video clips of people rushing into a cement building (or something like that). Husband & I were freaking out! But everyone outside was behaving normally. It was some kind of system check, no biggie to the locals…but I’m assuming it was in place & would be used in the case of an outside attack. Wild.

NYC and the people that made this PSA should've talked to a person that actually knows something about nuclear explosions. These 3 pieces of advice MIGHT work for a ground detonation, but nuclear bombs usually explode a couple hundred feet above the ground so the blast can cause more damage and spread radiation further. As with a conventional explosive, a nuclear detonation produces shock wave, or air blast wave. The air blast, with its accompanying winds, can damage structures and injure individuals. Individuals can also be injured by falling debris and flying glass shards. The air blast from a 1 KT detonation could cause 50% mortality from flying glass shards, to individuals within an approximate radius of 300 yards (275 m). This radius increases to approximately 0.3 miles (590 m) for a 10 KT detonation. The second effect would be extreme heat, a fireball, with temperatures up to millions of degrees. The heat from a fireball is sufficient to ignite materials and cause burns far from the fireball, and the associated intense light may cause blindness. The heat from a 1 KT detonation could cause 50% mortality, from thermal burns, to individuals within an approximate 0.4 miles (610 m) radius. This radius increases to approximately 1.1 miles (1800 m) for a 10 KT detonation. Shadowing by structures between the fireball and the individual will prevent or reduce heat effects. The initial radiation is produced in the first minute following detonation. The detonation’s intense initial pulse produces ionizing radiation that causes intense radiation exposures. The initial radiation pulse from a 1 KT device could cause 50% mortality from radiation exposure, to individuals, without immediate medical intervention, within an approximate ½ mile (790 m) radius. This radius increases to approximately ¾ mile (1200m) for a 10 KT detonation. Individuals in intervening buildings and building basements may receive a reduced exposure due to the additional shielding. Ground shock, equivalent to a large localized earthquake, would also occur. This could cause additional damage to buildings, roads, communications, utilities, and other portions of the infrastructure. The ground shock and air blast would be expected to cause the major disruptions in the local infrastructure. So yeah, NYC might wanna rethink this PSA.

There would still be people who felt the effects of the blast but weren't killed, so they at least need to prepare in case of that, and to be honest i'd rather die instantly to a nuke than slowly to its radiation.
@jen30551
@jen30551 Жыл бұрын
Now that's a PSA! Seriously though, it is hard to balance preparedness with the awful reality of a nuclear blast. I survived severe burns as a child and as dark as this is, I wouldn't have wanted to survive has they been much worse. Especially when infrastructure will be deeply damaged or nonexistent. At that point, any medical personnel still functioning will be in triage mode. If you're too far gone, they move on. To say I have a limited understanding of how a nuclear blast functions is an understatement but from what I've read, it is my understanding this message is really for people far enough outside the blast zone. Everyone within it...well, we've all seen the footage of Japan from WWII. Just sickens me that this is a thing that could very well happen given what is happening in the world right now.
@jen30551
@jen30551 Жыл бұрын
@@CanuckRabbit Exactly. And then depending on the size of the blast, you would have the aftermath of basic necessities being completely unavailable or supply stunted to the point where violence would be a common way to obtain such things. Not to mention nuclear winter and the likelihood of of retaliation. So many countries have nuclear capabilities now that any one of them could pop off after such an event setting off a chain reaction.

My mom is a nurse she wouldn’t let us go outside, covered the windows and put towels down where the crack of the doors. Couple days later US military had a tank come down our street and they told us that we were not allowed to leave the house unless we had to go to work or medical reasons because we were under martial law. Pretty scary experience.

Firstly, chernobyl is not the same as a nuclear bomb, yes, it exploded, but the severe radiation was what caused all the deaths, a nuclear bomb is much different, they say go inside so you have a chance on survival, it's not gonna save everyone, what, do you want everyone to go outside? Plus, a nuclear bomb is a large explosion, chernobyl did explode but again, it is not the same and not on the same scale

@TachibanaTengoku

That's my thought too....If you're anywhere near where the nuke hit, you're going to die, don't even bother trying to duck or hide in cover. If you're within range of deadly levels of radiation, heat, the shockwave etc, you could immediately die. If you're right outside of that range, sure go ahead and hide, but you're probably still going to die from radiation poisoning in a week or two, might as well die immediately than suffer.

Being prepared isn't a bad thing. Disasters both natural and man made can happen. The balance is not to allow being prepared to morph into paranoia. I put my seat belt on every time I drive, it doesn't matter if it's a 5 min trip or 5 hour. I don't plan to get into an accident but I want to take the precautions necessary to give me the best chance at survival. Even if the risk of a nuclear catastrophe was the most imminent, why didn’t mention anything about stocking food, water, medicines, health supplies and gas?!

How the heck can you be prepared for a nuclear attack? Especially with how dense and populated NYC is?

It was found that many people in the bombings in Japan that survived that were very close to the impact were indoors and away from windows.

It's not highly unlikely. Good of them to show this. Might happen in a year or two.

Unless you have a shelter far enough away from the blast zone with years and years worth of food you won't survive any nuclear attacks.

Let’s get this comment to the top. Idk much about fallout, but after the atomic drops of Japan, there were survivors taking about how drinking the water killed other people. Also the Radiation burns among COUNTLESS other invisible killers… ugh. Seeing that documentary was chilling.

Will this advice actually worked in a nuclear strike though? I've seen kurzgezats, i definitely spelled this wrong, video of what happen in a nuclear strike and they said it actually almost impossible to survive if you actually had been in a few mile radius of the strike, they even said that it was worse than a volcanic eruption or a hurricane because of how sudden and devastating it is. My personal advice is unless you have a nuclear bunker either you go to farther away from the explosion or go to the center to have an instant death.
