The Apple Watch I purchased in 2020 kept giving me low pulse rate warnings. I took this info along with the ecg readings to my doctor. Long story short, I ended up with a pacemaker for sick sinus syndrome. I thought I was just tired. I could have passed out while driving if I had waited to see a doctor much later than I had. I’m a huge advocate for always wearing my Apple Watch. I’m 73, live alone, and ride my bicycle alone more than 2,000 miles a year, including in other countries. The fall alert alone makes me feel a lot more confident, but I also like tracking my sleep, keeping an eye on my pulse (I deep breathe when it goes too high), and knowing that it will alert me if other medical events are imminent. I got one for my son, and he loves being able to get alerts etc. without pulling out his phone while he manages his restaurant. Sometimes technology really is a blessing.

I wholeheartedly agree with you! I am so glad I got my apple watch. It's an older SE model, yet so useful. I love the vibrating alarm (no more traumatic sound alarms on my phone in the morning), the ability to pay with it and receive/reply to messages without having to pull out my phone or credit card, the fact that I never miss a call even though I'm not near my phone all the time, the timers I can set very conveniently for everything (especially when I cook)... and the list goes on and on

what a bittersweet story - i had a very nice boss/client suddenly pass away at home from a heart attack a few years ago. his older son (17) was the only one at home when it happened and wore his dad's apple watch for while afterward, which showed when his heart stopped (part of his grieving process, which included some guilt but he did get through it with family/friends support). it's wonderful and downright amazing what technology can do for us these days, but it can't save us every time. so glad it helped this lady.

The takeaway: we’re all going to die. But how we live, can determine what happens in between. If tech can help prolong and expand your life, then I believe it’s worth it. Apple Watch is more than the sum of its parts. It gives me comfort having access to the few but important bits of information and activities I do every day. Was I alive and well before Apple Watch? Yes. Will I continue to? Yes. But my quality of life, however I define that, is the better for it.

I didn’t get a warning for Afib on my Apple Watch. It was the ecg feature that detected it. I went to the ER and the ER was going to do electro cardioversion which is a shock that the lady had. But my heart returned to normal rhythm just before they did it. I was referred to a cardiologist and he was surprised they decided to shock my heart because my age and no previous heart issues I had low risk for blood clots. Cardiologist thought ER doc was too quick to resort to shock. Normally they start with Metorprolol ER first, the gold standard for heart arrhythmia.

My Apple Watch has been vibrating AFIB warning several times in a month. I play tennis, do dumbbells, brisk walking and treadmill. I was diagnosed with AFIB in my 50s and I’m now nearing my mid 70s. But I’ve never lain in a hospital bed due to AFIB like this lady in the video.

I have a Withings ScanWatch, it's also has a medical grade EKG and can detect breathing issues etc. I got it to be able to record the weird episodes of heart pounding that I was concerned about. I was able to show the doctor but they confirmed it aligned with the prior monitoring results, and it was just SVT which is very common and benign. Still pretty cool to have a watch that can do this.

I had Afib and it was painful. I ended up admitted into the cardiac unit. It was brutal. I'm only 31, not mega obses (a little chunky). But I had scarlet fever as a kid and ended up with an arrhythmia and I also have anemia (so tachycardia too).

My wife has been using a smart watch and I think it’s time I get one as well.

You’d think she’d get straight to a hospital with those symptoms. Chest pain needs to be addressed immediately. Thank God she had a watch tell her to seek help and that she no longer ignored her symptoms. Men and women, seek medical intervention immediately if you have chest pain and if you’re 100 pounds overweight, don’t wait until you risk death to make changes. I was overweight and am still working on losing weight. I’ve lost 60 pounds. Anyone can do this too.

Same here. I have water + fiber before meals, I do a quick strength-training app every morning (there are good free youtubes also) and I walk as fast as I reasonably can for an hour a day. I got a body composition scale from Amazon, surprisingly inexpensive, so I am sure I’m losing fat and not muscle or bone. I make a whey protein and collagen shake in the blender for lunch. I take a Berberine after every meal. If I overdo one day, I eat a can of sardines for dinner the next day. It’s working so far. Down 6 pounds of fat in two weeks. I am also in a calorie deficit, and as I lose weight my calories needed drop also (the scale reports:. What people don’t realize, and why most rebound. I am done rebounding. Best of luck! You can do it.

I have a Samsung smart watch but it’s the same thing honestly. Last May I was coming down with horrific chest pains and the episodes of super high resting heart of at least 160 bpm and atrial fibrillation and my hands and limbs would go ice cold. I kept going to ER but since it was a far drive it would always be over by the time I got there and they kept brushing me off and told me I had anxiety- they set me up with a psychiatrist. Because my limbs would go ice cold and my blood flow would like cut off from my body they were never able to get enough blood to do labs and I’d leave the hospital in bruises. Finally one night I kept happening and I was in horrific pain. I kept recording my watch doing my heart rate and afib readings. It would always get worse at night and when I tried to lay down. I went to the ER for the like 8th time and refused to leave until they kept me under observation for the night and let me see a cardiologist in the morning and show them my videos and watch reading history. As I lay in the hospital all night and tried to sleep the machines were going off constantly and they ran in like 6 times. They finally saw it happen, and in the morning I saw a cardiologist and showed them my watch history and videos. After months of not sleeping and being incredibly sick and in so much pain I was finally diagnosed with acute pericarditis and then after an ultrasound and MRI I was diagnosed with chronic acute pericarditis- acute myocarditis and now as a result of it being left untreated for so long my left ventricle is dilated leaving me with long term issues. I’ve been on hardcore NSAIDS for a year now and it flares up any time I attempt to stop them. I’ll be on them for the foreseeable future. I’m a very healthy woman in my 30s who doesn’t smoke or drink whatsoever and is a healthy weight. I lost my job because of this. I couldn’t take care of my kids. No one believed me until I made them. And the watch was what helped sway the ER docs and cardiologist to actually put me on observation. I’ve never had such a serious illness and to have to brushed off so quickly really soured the way I view healthcare.

My Garmin watch alerts me when my heart rate is abnormal and I'm figuring out what causes them. I'm an avid runner and still have heart rate issues. Seeing a cardiologist soon! My fitness watch saved my life, too! I've had one since ~2010 but my newest one is the one that was fancy enough to give me the similar alert that saved this woman's life. If you have 2x apple watches. One can always charge, while there is always a fully charged one to pick up. It is not necessarily worse for the environment, because you can use both devices for the lifecycle of two watches. May even be environmentally friendly, if battery life is conserved, when it is easier to keep battery above 20%…and less charges are required in total.

This would have saved me 18 months ago from the damage I currently have. I was in A-fib, probably for months, and didn't know it. I thought I was just a bit stressed, because I had been having more anxiety episodes due to a new job. It damaged my left ventricle and I have a form of CHF now. My doctor is suggesting I get some sort of smart watch, but since I got sick and lost my job, I still especially can't afford one.

Take the vo2 max reading with a grain of salt. I was worried too but when I looked further into it, it uses outdoor walks to measure. It should be using from your highest heart rate during an intense exercise to resting after a few minutes. Even pro athletes say their Apple Watch tells them their vo 2 max is not good.
