Many moons ago I worked for a performance/custom speed company as a technical illustrator creating documentation for custom ultra precision engine , gearbox , supercharger and alloy wheel creations..they utilized only high end CNC/Alphanumeric machines.. everything was from billet.. the various components were very expensive..and works of art... watching this video brought back great memories..👍👍👍😊

Impressive!!! I used to program CNC machines over 25 to 30 years ago my 1st machine was a paper tape reader we moved to a 3.5 floppy disk and then to rewrite CDs. Then I got rifited after almost 15 years of prototyping. Now I do mechanical engineering. It was the best job I ever had. I put experiments into outer space that were successful. I made prototype medical devices and equipment and other things I can't talk about. I also did model making, injection molding, metallurgy ,Mig, Tig, plasma, and complete wood working, to many other skills to list. That was the most fulfilling job that I ever had. The rest of my career has been boring in comparison, however it pays the bills.

Why are people suggesting that you make a running engine? How can you cut the internal water passages needed to run coolant through the block? What about the internal oil passages? If the block had been made on a 3D printer the passages could be built in and 3D milling could bring the cylinders and measurements into spec. But you can not make an operational engine block using only 3D milling.

@@kyleboren7372 One of us is a tool/mold maker by trade and knows what EXACTLY what is involved, so where EXACTLY are the mentioned videos? You can machine (drill) simple water passages in solid metal but that does not provide cooling for LONG TERM running of your engine because of the limited volume of the coolant passage/thickness of the remaining metal surrounding the cylinder in the block/head. With uneven cooling the metal does not expend equally and the piston and valves sleaze ending engine operations.

back in the 1980s there was a guy making and selling 1HP 1cu in V8 engines in the back pages of hot rod magazines for $1000. they were fully functional 1/18 scale motors for rc cars that could fit in the palm of your hand. they had a tunnel ram and 2 carbs and were quite sick.

Life is so much easier using renishaw 🤓 I remember before we had them , manually setting x and y with a 5mm probe , setting heights with a 2inch probe and allowing for it in the offsets. These renishaw probes are a dream , select you program , g54 , diameter z drop f4 and 2 and the jobs set already . So easy

@@collinbetten9377 not as tight as you think, eg: my recent motorbike rebuild had a new piston with 0.1mm play, the previous piston had 0.5mm play, most VMC's can do 0.01mm to 0.0001mm accuracy

Wow ! That machine is just the biz ! I would love to see a Wankel being machined on it and you could turn both of these motors or models into a moving display by adding a small electric motor to turn them over . They would make an interesting display for your reception area or front desk .

I had the privilege/headache of working with a 9 axis Mazak Integrex years ago. It would do some neat stuff, but repeatability wasn't one of them. Just one of the tradeoffs of using a lathe to do millwork. This looks like a very capable machine. Thank you for the video.

Would imagine hard to make a functional V-8 block with CNC since hard to cut coolent ports behind cylinder jugs. That process done in casting iron by sand, thus "freeze plugs". Very interesting process this

In sure it can make a Reuleaux triangle, for the rotar, very easily. The combustion chamber/housing isn't in the shape of a trochoid though.

Make the block open deck and use wet liners if you're looking to make it run. Crank can be made on 5 axis then ground to finnished size on journals

one of my dreams is to build a 400CC V8 using Honda crf50 parts... pistons, con rod, bearings and rings, rocker arms, valves, springs and seals, and many more are all pre-made for you, use them as off the shelf parts, then just machine the block, heads cams and crank. buy a crf50 motor and tear it down, measure and 3D scan it all, you know the rest lol... im still very new to CAD, but this project is one I came up with a few years ago and has been pushing me to learn cad. I would love to see the way you would go about building this.... one thing I would like to see if you end up building it is keep it a 90deg v8 and make it even firing order, it will sound like a Ferrari then :) after you have a bench top V8 build a transmission to go with it and put it in a go-kart! :) the gear set, shift drum and forks, bearings and shafts can be pulled from something like a CRF450R and then you'll have a 6 speed sequential dog box trans... work smart, not hard... not all the parts need to be made, the engineering and machining has been done on a lot of them, you just gotta build the parts to connect them 8 at a time lol... love the vids, I learn a lot and enjoy watching them every time. thanks.

Was this your CAD design? Maybe make the model public so people can make parts that will bolt up to it in fusion 360 (good way to generate more interest in the platform) and have a KZbin design contest to determine which parts to make. I’m a mechanical engineering student, so I’d love to try modeling the necessary parts to make this engine block into a fully workable engine, especially if they might get produced for free. I’m willing to bet there’s plenty of other folks who can do the same. Let’s see who can make the best complete engine design from a manufacturers perspective, then watch you machine it!

Awesome tooling and CNC work! I hope you get to the point where you machine the entire engine (except for the spark plug wires, air filter, etc... that aren’t metal) so that it works with real pump gas (petrol, for you UK people)! Not sure how you’d make a miniature, working spark plug, though. Can it machine ceramic, or would that (spark plug body) have to be cast?

Would make more sense to design it to work with the miniature spark plugs from small single cylinder engines, the Honda GX25 comes to mind, it’s a consumable item, and not trivial to manufacture.

@@Bollerkotze holy crap, that's definitely a health issue. I'm assuming you guys may not covered by OSHA. I'd invest in some PPE or see if the shop will provide it. I build powerlines for a living so OSHA is always up our asses, but it's a good thing because the company must provide PPE. Hard hats, safety glasses, leather gloves, FR clothes, and for obvious reasons, our rubber gloves and sleeves rated for the voltage we work on.

I'd love to see you and Brent Leivestad from PFI get together and build a V8 Honda K series. You'd have to mirror image a head, but you can copy the front of a J series to line every thing up. I heard Brent talking about maybe one day putting a V8 together using K series inspired heads. A 4.8 liter V8 with K20 heads would be a fire breather. SHO' NUFF would scream. I bet the content would draw a lot of views, likes and comments.

the first setup was for fixturing in the 5-axis trunnion, the rest doesn't matter because the whole thing is raw stock and there are no datums to be referenced off of yet (if that's what you meant)

Might i HIGHLY suggest a Bourke Engine! They're the toughest and most efficient engines ever designed and have much fewer moving parts than any other engine save for a Wankel. 22.5 to one compression ratio, pulse detonation homogeneous charge. I have ALL the blueprints and CAD/CAM files already made. I don't have a lathe or CNC, all I have is a bridgeport. I'll help any way I can including designing and building a special thermal catalytic cracking fuel system and ignition system (spark plugs only used for startup, once warmed up the engine is compression ignition).

you can make billet pistons , you can make a billet crank and rods too if you make liners to go intoo the engine you probably be able to make coolant passages intoo the block and grooves in the head deep enough to cool somewat camshaft and most of the other stuff can and have been done before , the harder parts are probably the waterpump oilpump ignition and injection all of those could be done outside the block and with an ecu

Looks great! You should consider a V8 2 stroke and run it on Nitro/Synthetic mix like an RC car or plane engine does. This will allow for no valve/timing system, air and fuel cooling, and easy to obtain fuel. You could easily use that block for it.😁

Seeing the shape of the block at the beginning and of the v8 at the end, is there a particular reason why you started from a cylinder rather than a cube ? Or is it just because your aluminium "ingot" came this way ?

Anonymouspock: My father had an NSU Ro80 with a Wankel engine. It worked!!! Allthough it had regular trouble with its compression sealings between the chambers.

Anonymouspock When you get a chance HMU. I have a 4 rotor RX8 that breaths fire and gets downright rude and unnecessary when you get on the throttle.
