What kind of person takes a cruise not for a week or a month, but for the rest of his life? Meet Mario Salcedo, who says that nearly 20 years of nonstop cruise ship living have made him “The Happiest Guy in the World” - though the truth of that claim may be in the eye of the beholder.
Read the article here: nyti.ms/2HRa7BY
This is the third Op-Doc from the prolific young director Lance Oppenheim. In last year’s “No Jail Time: The Movie,” he delved into a subculture of lawyers using filmmaking techniques to reduce their clients’ sentences. His Op-Doc debut was “Long Term Parking,” about a group of airline employees who live in an airport parking lot. Together, “Long Term Parking” and “The Happiest Guy in the World,” draw a vivid portrait, both hopeful and bleak, of Americans trying to redefine what counts as “home.”

is anyone going to mention how beautifully shot this documentary was? it feels like a real cinematic piece - the music, the framing, the colour grading, the overall cinematography. for instance, in the part where he's consulting his spreadsheet on his laptop with two other cruisers, the lighting is incredible - the golden gleaming of the table centrepiece and all the glasses and drinks on it. seriously, kudos to the director. i would love to see more documentaries like this from this channel!

I believe one can live life alone and not be lonely. The impression I got was that part of the "package" of being a top cruiser, he sort of "owns" the ship and the crew are his staff. Everything is done for him and all he's doing is using his disposal income from good investments 20-30 years ago to pay their wages. :) He even has his own office assigned for him so he can run his internet business too. I liked it when he said, when the timed comes he'll go for one last scuba dive at 400 ft! Good humour right there.

bawfuls I can see why you'd say that, but as an introvert, I disagree. It's easy to stay by yourself when everyone else always leaves. There's no permanence on a cruise so there's no one looking for you. Sometimes it's easier to feel alone in a crowd where no one knows you or acknowledges you. Still, I feel like he does it more to avoid daily responsibilities like cooking and cleaning more so than to avoid relationships.
@bawfuls
@bawfuls 6 жыл бұрын
Avoiding cooking/cleaning/laundry as he mentioned is also an odd reason, as it's quite easy to hire people to provide those services for you on land as well, and clearly he can afford to.

So many people commenting on how he is so lonely, sad etc. but I disagree. He may very well be happy living this lifestyle. I've heard stories about how living on a ship is actually less expensive than living on land. This may very well be the retirement community of the future.

Well there are a lot of people all over the world who come home lonely from work with no family, no connections, for whatever reason it is what it is. This guy probably just found a comfort zone, even though not ideal, it brings him some sort of peace of mind...it's almost as if he owns the cruise or something. One week turned into one year turned into 20 years. Some people don't really have the need to be intimate or it's really difficult for them, or they are not interested, but this guy was a successful business person -- so you never can tell the strengths and weaknesses of a person. Besides loneliness is relative. From the outside, going on social media (facebook, instagram, ...) all the time trying to find validation from other strangers seems strange too.

I've worked on cruises as a musician and have met a few cruislings, they haven't lived on a ship to this extent, but cruise consistently, and I get a lonely vibe from them. Like when Mario said all his friends were there as he walked in the dining area, but there were just staff there, paid to be civil to him, not saying they wouldn't either way, but you're kinda obliged to listen and befriend passengers, it's your job. I personally find the engagements forced a lot of the time, and I understand Mario when he says he not interested in being involved in the group dynamic. But yes, beautifully shot, I think it lacked some humorous anecdotes, interactions, and a bit of info as to why he is able to afford his lifestyle.

No one's saying he shouldn't have the legal right to live on cruise ships, we're saying that his life is filled with superficial pleasure that will not bring him happiness in the long run, and constantly saying otherwise like he is: "I'm the happiest man in the world" is indicative of not actually being happy. I have the legal right to make fun of a blind person I see crossing a street, but that doesn't mean it's ok if I do. Likewise, he has an absolute legal right to live the rest of his life on cruise ships, but that's definitely a selfish and short sighted thing to do that warrants scathing criticisms

JEALOUSY among retired unimaginative people is ubiquitous. I'd guess most of the negativity on this thread comes from the most ordinary of people. This guy's accountable for his life. Which is more than can be said for most men his age.

I think that he truly believes he is happy. Whether he truly is or if he is just lying to himself, I don't know. However, it seems like the crew/director believes that he isn't truly happy, which can be shown throught the video editing. The crew seems to be telling the story of a lonely man, but I don't think that's the story the man is living in.

A lot of extroverts yapping about how unhappy he really is, when, in reality, he’s just aging. He seems rational enough to know the golden years is when a lot of people experience depression, not just him. Also the director did a beautiful job making this cinematic.

Absolute happiness does not exist, I would say that he found a way to feel peace and tranquility, in addition to the comforts he has and the number of problems he has left behind. These are decisions that few of us can make in life, he was able to do it and very well for him if it is what he wants.

So much of what this guy is saying and how he behaves screams depression and sadness. When he talks about how he has done everything and all he has to look firqard to is new ships. He talks about being the happiest man in the world then adds "alone". I have felt similar at times that I'd rather be alone, but that was during times where I just wanted to forget about my troubles and just others, but the happiest times for me were actually times spent with others and even introverts need others in their lives. He even talked about escaping real life.

Exceptionally well shot and edited, musical choices are fantastic. Most interesting thing is how the guy keeps saying that he is the happiest guy in the world, but all the visual composition suggests just the opposite. It is sort of saying you can trust what you see more than what you hear. The line where he says "I wish I had my own private elevator" sort of says it all.
