I'm Mexican, and sometimes watching content similar to this makes me uncomfortable especially when people discuss cartel videos. I've seen what is done over there and it's horrible but it always rubs me the wrong way how it's discussed by those who aren't from there. You truly never know how people end up tortured in those videos, how people think it's easy to avoid a fate like that and say shit like "well they got involved so they got what was coming". I know cartels are genuinely horrible, and I know family members who've been threatened by them, but I just want to urge people to educate themselves on the situation so that they don't end up sounding ignorant and xenophobic. Yeah it's so weird. So much brutal stuff happens in English speaking countries too, guess people are just scared of the unknown. For what it's worth I think Brazil is a beautiful place! Discovering Brazilian music online (mainly 60s/70s samba and Novos Baianos since I tend to like US and UK "dad rock" lol) really sparked my interest in other culture's music There is a whole world of creativity out there that will never break through in America just because it's not sung in English. The last one I heard where someone got seriously hurt was a shock to everybody. i stepped away from plagued moth's content for stupid reasons like the editing and forgetting to cut a lot of waiting and reading out. i'm really lucky that leaving that long ago saved me from being exposed to that content with zero warning. may's content is so so so much more healthy and happy to consume anyway. in another way, seeing a trans creator so open about her life is incredibly comforting as someone who usually only hears from trans creators about transition (not that that doesn't help as well). from a trans man, thank you for everything may. i also bought fluids on my kobo and can't wait to read it!

My thoughts on Plagued Moth have been changing a lot. I used to watch his videos to learn about these things so I wouldn’t have to watch them. However, I began to really hate when he would include the audio or some photos. My final straw was when he made a video about the Uvalde shooting and showed clips from inside the school. As a teacher, this is my worst nightmare, and it sucked that I was exposed to those clips without any warning or permission. I truly don’t understand why people brag about watching these videos. Im sure Plagued Moth is a great guy, but the whole “hurter of feelings” brand he is taking on now just rubs me the wrong way.

Thanks May for a) doing the fucking hard mental labour of actually intellectually engaging with these videos that apparently no one else is willing to do, and b) giving me a safe way to do so vicariously without having to actually traumatise myself in the process of watching them. And while I've never gone through the NSFL tier this far....you kind of helped me hard. I have had profound anxiety all my life, I grew up Catholic, child of parents who taught me the world was unsafe and unkind, and while I've never seen these videos, a lot of this messaging was introduced to me without me knowing it. And like, look, my anxiety isn't going to fucking dissapear...but...this made me feel comforted to hear. Makes me want to just pet my cat, and let her know I love her, and make food for friends. If the bear attack mentioned here is the same as the one I'm (unfortunately?) familiar with: that one actually kind of has a relatively positive ending, compared to everything else. They did a pretty bang-up job on the facial reconstruction, given _The Circumstances_, and at least from one article I've seen, he's been quoted as pretty happy with his life afterwards and actively working towards his recovery since. These last two videos have been absolutely incredible, the amount of thoughtfulness you've put in, the way that you're making me rethink all the reactionary shit we all see everyday, amazing job. The ending part, about enjoying our lives, it really resonated with me. It's so interesting to me that one of the most insightful videos in years, with messages that I think everyone should hear and internalize, is in a NSFL video. Legit though - watching these has helped a lot with my own personal anxiety. Hearing someone just say; yeah, this does happen, death does happen and it does suck, is so refreshing to hear. I feel like generally we are so gaslit into pretending like it's not real, it's never going to happen to us, and if it does, it just means we get to go to some unguaranteed afterlife - to just get down to the brass tacks of it and hear someone say; it happens and it DOES suck, helps so much. I remember about these cases. It's more of a "The cartel" thing. Most things you'd call NSFL that happen in the crime dens of Rio's favelas are actually taken directly from torture practices ensued by police officers to criminals while in imprisonment. The institute of the western hemisphere (the current iteration of the school of the americas) is still active and brazil still has not officially withdrawn involvement in enlisting military officers into the school. In fact mass torture is quite the thing in brazilian prisons. Brazilian military police officers learn to torture prisoners from american officers, and those prisoners learn to torture their enemies from that. So while ppl do have the fame of getting aggressive because of soccer, it has a lot more context than just we being barbaric compared to caucasians, the people FAMOUSLY KNOWN FOR RESPECTING HUMAN DIGNITY THROUGHOUT HISTORY

the ending of this video was nearly enough to make me cry. i used to suffer from severe anxiety and depression, to the point where i couldn’t envision myself living long past high school. i’m 27 now and in a much, much better place, but i used to spend so much time being upset and angry about the horrible things in the world. now i’m old enough to understand that caring about others’ pain does not mean that i have to torture myself over it - my suffering does not alleviate anyone else’s suffering. there is so much value, so much meaning, in letting yourself love life. let yourself experience joy, so that you might spread it. we all know the world is capable of extreme violence - it is a radical act to focus on the love within it instead.

I feel the weight of my impact on others so heavily that I have avoided having any impact at all when possible. Your treatment of all of this, some of the worst humanity has to offer, to educate and allow as safe an exploration as possible is an incredible example of someone trying their best to make sure that their impact has a net positive impact on the lives you touch, and I just want to thank you for that.
