I appreciate this revisit. I loved late-development X3 but hated X4 at launch, but haven't really bothered keeping up with the seemingly endless updates.

Timelines was pretty ruff as a new player. The tutorials are great. Sandbox starts were very approachable. Nice video, very accurately explained.

Is worth mentioning that X4 is one of the few space sim games where carriers can be used as carriers, as in being able to deploy, retrieve, rearm and repair fighters. Not like the Elite Dangerous variant...and with way better perspective than carriers in EVE Online. By the latter I mean that in X4 you can sit near the landing pads as fighters are being launched and land, and focus view on individual fighters to the point you can see the chap piloting them. Just sit on the bridge of a big ship, and watch as everything around you burns. 😈

I’ve started to play X4 on my Steam Deck and handheld and I’m enjoying so far, especially as it’s now on sale. It doesn’t run brilliantly on the Steam Deck but I get mid 20 FPS most of the time and it’s enough for me to have a good time. I would recommend.

@@Nyxson As soon as I updated to 7.0 all the UI elements were available externally compared to previous versions. It could be a setting possibly that you need to enable but mine just started doing that. I noticed because I had to use third person view to actually finish the timelines missions

Well - I both have Starfield and X4: Foundations, and I play them both. I have played the X series from the start in 1999 with X - Beyond The Frontier, and have played and enjoyed all games released since then (yes, I even enjoyed the "black sheep" X - Rebirth). It's mind boggling how far the X series have developed and how massive they have become since that very start with X - Beyond The Frontier... And let's face it - Starfield is not in any way comparable to X: Foundations. It's a completely different type of game. Starfield is a story driven, RPG-like game that happens to play in a space environment. Nothing more, nothing less. It never was meant to be a "space" game to start with. Space is just the environment where the RPG-like game play takes place, but it was never meant to be a space game in the sense that the core play is flying around an fighting with ships. The ships and space environment is more comparable to the horse and carriage and roads in Skyrim. Just a means of transportation from the one RPG hub to the other, with a bit of fighting along the way... Anyway - I love both X4: Foundations and Starfield, but both for very different reasons....

I came close to buying starfield new for $22 until I found your video on x4 (which I've never heard of before now) and it made me think. I have never played a space sim before and would very much so appreciate your opinion. I know YOU like the game and I know it will take time to get used to it but is it a game a rookie can start playing if he's looking for something to dive into? It says playable on steamdeck with small lettering being the only issue. I was never into pc's so the steam deck gives me flexibility to play games not on nintendo or xbox. Since the farce of oddessey release in elite dangerous and after 3500 hours playing it over 2 accounts I’ve been looking for something else. I tried star citizen, was ok but couldn’t get into it the same way. NMS wasn’t for me , even bought starfield. I kept coming back to reviews on x4 but every time was put off by it being single player … I took the plunge 3 days ago ….. bad decision …. My girlfriend ain’t seen me, my kids ain’t seen me, hell I’m drinking black coffee as I haven’t even went out for a pint of milk , I’m self employed and have done jack all since getting this game…. It’s a steep learning curve but so was elite and tbf I like that in a game. I alternate from sweaty games like rocket league and r6 where the learning curve is the mechanics to create a skill gap and elite / now x4 where I can switch off and become immersed… haven’t tried timeline as I jumped into the youngun start

Great Video, I enjoyed timelines as I enjoy the story in X4, and it was really fun to go back to events of the past and be part of them. But I respect and understand why it's not for everyone especially it's quite the opposite to the base game and it handles. 7.0 was really amazing the amount of work they put into it was really awesome.

Hey bro old player here (5years ago) how about the reason we dont play this back then, the broken AI, broken auto trade, AI faction war broken feels lifeless mindless AI that attack eachother piecemeal, lack of content, depth, economy broken (hard start but once rolling its super easy) & galaxy feels lifeless in general. any of those remedied?. I saw this on sale on Steam the other day and once again started reading reviews. Even the most positive reviews are saying this game has a steep learning curve and most importantly the UI is a mess. One of those reviews said it took him 50+ hours just to start to get an understanding of the game. Would you say these statements are true?

Yes and no. Depends on who you are and how much you play the game. With updated tutorials, I say it will take 10 hours on average to understand most mechanics except for endgame

It depends, but for me in 6.XX it was one session of something close to 12h and I pretty much had all the important stuff figured out. Building stations can be a bit daunting but as long as you have some patience to look up what you need to produce things, and start from the bottom of the chain working up, it's honestly not that complicated.

And you don't need ANY of them for the gameplay mechanics (just for additional campaigns and sectors), with the exception of Timelines. For everything else base game is more than enough

I was able to figure out Eve Online, Elite Dangerous, and other sand box games. I couldn't figure this game out, ontop of dealing with poor performance at the start. So unless they changed their engine and added more options for scaling, this is still a none playable game to me.

Every major version had engine improvements. 6.0 swapped the entire physics engine and 7.0 added TAA.

X4 DLC Guide: if you are cherry picking the DLCs, forget Timelines. Get Cradle of Humanity, Split Vendetta and Tides of Avarice, in that order. Then Kingdom End.

Yes. X4 carriers are way larger though and have up to 121 fighters for the largest variant. You could even join the fighter wing yourself. Unlike protoss they actually launch from landing pads too. Owning a carrier and stocking it is very lategame though. Drones exist too and can be launched from any L and XL ships and some M ships. They are rather weak. Carriers launch flyable fighters.

Nah this game is still shit. When a builder with plenty of funds is supposed to go get the materials to build with and it just sits there with an hourglass is just useless. The AI is broken. At some point or another ships you own that are assigned tasks just stop working. It's 7.0 and it's still and issue which to me is unplayable. I want to like it but it's trash. it always has been.
