colonization was a big factor why families abused their own back in the 1920's too the 60's 70's before going into state care then the colonized system continued too abuse them in the institutions. ie: Some were in state care for stealing milk tokens coz their baby sibling younger than them had no milk but the white European did. Some were taken into state care coz they had no shoes on their feet at school but the white Europeans did . Just a couple of examples where some were not abused by their families. What's the statistics? In regards to people being abused as children what percentage do you think goes on to become functioning members of society and what percentage of people don't. I seriously doubt the odds would be in your favor. Simple logic and statistics dictate that if you were raised in abuse you more than likely will perpetuate that abuse, to not do so is very rare. Time to start living in reality pal.

They are not complicit. They are doing a great job reporting on a different side of the story and allowing a voice to a minority group regardless of their associations. The only reason there is light being shed on the abuse in care, is because of who these people have become. They are not interviewing little Johnny from 7/11 who didn't go down a life of crime who experienced the same. Either way they are shedding light on a huge issue of predators preying on young people who knew they had the power and position to get away with it.

Everyone involved with the Herald should be entirely ashamed of being involved in such a heinous brand. Look at the audience you've created, intentionally. Divide et impera for your masters. Doing your utmost to make the world an objectively worse place.

I see most people think this interview was terrible, but I disagree. There’s a pretty distinct difference between giving context and trying to use that context as an excuse. Not sure which one these gang members are doing but surely the Herald and the average Kiwi can make that distinction.

tautoko ahau enei korero o nga morehu. historical limitations of claim against was the focus of the crown why those were unable to speak against their abusers in state care. Polictical law Acts upon acts a reason why it was easy for those to dismiss such claims against. No amount of money can ever give back too the survivors what was taken from them as a child while under legal guardian of care & safety under the superintendent Ministry of education Act 1925, later known as Development of Social Welfare then Child youth & families know known today as. My point here is you can change names as many times over generations however the same Act of 1925 still exists today, with variant amendments which created limitations to challenge or speak out against of historical abuse claims. Arohanui kia tatou. It took generations for the Government Crown too get it wrong & cover up their wrong doings so will it take too correct & validate all survivors then & now. Compensation will not ease the burden of all of us who have gone through that system but will certainly help big or small in raising differculties as we all are experiencing in today's economics .

The abuser should be held accountable to the full extent of the law maybe even further, trouble is where do you draw the line when the abused becomes the abuser? You will also end up prosecuting the victims until it reaches the end of the line, for it to be effective it has to be an even hand with emotions taken out of the system and do what is right and just. No shelter given to anyone no matter their standing in society, race colour or creed, everyone hurts, and some hold it in all their lives, but until there is resolution and these dirty deeds covered up nothing is achieved there is no closure.

Unfortunately the majority of abuse within people of part Maori decent occurs within the family. Up until about the 1960's their was not a problem. When the DPB came in there was a explosion of single women raising children without fathers. The family structure had broken down. We as a society now pay the cost. The Maori being at the bottom of economic ladder were affected most. If the mobs want to do something to help their members then they should start by outlawing family violence. Insist that if they get a woman pregnant that they live with them and be a father to the children and not expect the state to raise their children. What has happened in the past cannot be fixed but the next generation can be helped.
@kikimarama66525 ай бұрын
State care in New Zealand can be traced back to the 1860s, when the State first established industrial schools for children and young people. Most children and young people who were in State care in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were placed there by court order after committing relatively minor offences. A minority entered care after having found to be abandoned, neglected or otherwise abused by their families, or when their families were unable to care for them. This was for many different reasons, including poverty and the illness or death of a parent.
