Quick tip from a factory worker: What you've got there is *closed cell foam.* Closed cell foams are rigid, because the cells are... closed. *Open cell foams* are squishy. THEY would uptake resin, the same way they would uptake ANY liquid. So if you want to give a foam/resin project a bash: *open cell foam.*

Hey Nick, don't know if anyone else mentioned it it or not but, foam has different characteristics. One being Foam comes open cell and closed cell type as an example. I think you used closed cell foam, that is why the resin would not penetrate the foam ? How ever I think if you use open cell foam the resin would penetrate the foam but, it might eat them foam up and dissolve the foam into the resin giving you a soup of color instead of foam blocks as intended ? would love to see you give a go again with that in mind. We're making a diorama for my son's school project and the base for it is a white foam box that was packing material for something I bought a while ago. It's super firm but I've never poured resin inside a box made of this foam before. I went looking to see if anyone has used foam with resin and found your video. You technically didn't fail at this project idea. You learned something and that's always a good thing. I've had failed projects with resin myself. One example: I used black food coloring to dye my resin. It comes as a single bottle in stores and seems to have a different chemical makeup in comparison to the 4 colors that come in one pack. It not only caused my resin to not set properly, but actually separated from the resin and made the resin gross, pitted and sticky like goo. I also learned that black food coloring has a dark blue base to it. I ended up having to throw it out, but I learned from it too.

The texture of the resin that you pulled off the foam is really, really cool. You should see if there are any clay artists that would be interested in using those pieces for their own art. I have read articles about artists who take "molds" of any interesting textures they encounter, which they incorporate into their projects. So, in addition to being an incredible artist yourself, you could also help other incredible artists with their art form. Fail is a 4 letter word, Nick. It does NOT belong in your vocabulary, especially when referring to yourself. Maybe you should be like my cat when he does something crazy. He just picks himself up, and looks at me as if he is about to say, "I meant to do that."

Nick, my man, just a suggestion, brother. As you build the layers with this foam, drill slightly over sized in varying angles and pin the foam together with colored pencils or colored straws. Add more layers and pencils as you go up in layers to the height you desire. Then when your over all height is complete, drill in from the outside and pin the outer part of the layers together too. The slightly over sized holes will allow the epoxy somewhere to flow in a vacuum or pressure chamber/pot. A pencil spacer between each layer would also assure flow and give a good glue surface between foam layers, and would allow the use of a colored epoxy too without hiding the colored foam around the edges of the pot/vase/box you're making. Of course you'll have to brush on a seal coat of epoxy just like with this project, or several coats of spray varnish or laquer. But "pinning" it together would help it hold for turning, and the colored pencils or straws would add some structure that small tubes of epoxy alone might not. If you plan ahead, you could just pin the area you plan on leaving and save on pencils 🤔.
