The ice melted due to the exothermic reaction of the resin setting. Placing it in the pressure pot ensured that there is absolutely no space around that water. Because of that, the water itself can not move at all. If you did a larger cube with glitter frozen into it, then you would be able to quantify the movement of the fluid trapped within the resin. Still an amazing project!!
@LionXL3 жыл бұрын
yup... a great project for that would be to freeze small plastic fish, grass, etc. and the stick it in the resin and when it done you would have a small [snow] globe/terarium type of thing. might need to use salt water or something so fish don't just float to the top.

When you put the ice into the resin, it quickly cools & hardens and then becomes encapsulated. That's what made it float, even more than the less dense ice already would've done. I love trees and kept imagining myself weighing down the ice bubbles with a branched bit of wood to make a fantasy bubble tree. Loved this project, Nick, as well as the movie references! TECHNICALLY, if the water were under the right pressure, it would be solid (ie. Ice) above 0C. But water is one of those weird ones, where it actually takes LESS than 1 ATM to reach solid at higher temps, and while the addition of the alcohol? dyes mess with that, I just don't see it LIKELY that the "ice" is still "frozen" in this case. But NOT impossible.

@pyredynasty3 жыл бұрын
So I guess we've learned that freezing water leaves it solid long enough that it doesn't prevent the resin from setting up like the orbeez did. Can you freeze orbeez? This has a lot of potential. You can make custom ice forms. I'm also thinking about how flowers sometimes get moldy in the resin and if freezing them would prevent that. Or what about resin snow globes.
@Katja323 жыл бұрын
The flowers would definitely still mold. Dry them before putting them in resin to prevent this. Maybe try using a dehydrator on its lowest settings (to try to preserve color). The reason flowers and such mold in resin is because of moisture; freezing them will not remove the moisture. The ice in this obviously is liquid, like the blue ice cube that floated to the top of the second layer of resin. The reason it still LOOKS like ice is that there wasn't air trapped between the ice cubes and the resin. Usually, if you add ice to high heat, when it melts it almost instantly becomes steam (one of my favorite ways to steam veggies; high heat, layer of ice, garlic, vegetables, cover tightly, and keep the pan in motion), however, the changing stages of the ice was trapped within the viscous resin, not allowing the ice to turn to steam. You notice this the most with the orange ice, because it definitely melted quite a bit and shifted around into an amorphous blob rather than holding shape, as the resin wasn't quite as set that early on.

The nearly set resin coated the ice cubes before being locked to all the other ice cubes. Then the resin stuck to the resin to form that big clump. Once the ice melted -and it did melt, ofc- it had no where else to go, and most of the colors stayed within the same form. I think the effect was also helped by using rounded ice cubes. The facets and the spinning light were also a super great idea. Great experiment and project, Nick!

That is so incredibly cool! I'm.not scientist, but there are a couple observations I'd offer: 1. The ice is melted. 2. The now melted ice semispheres held their shapes and have not mixed color because if you go back and watch, as he added them 1 at a time and pushed them down with the stick it looked to me like the resin was creating a bit of a pocket around the ice individually, so as he added another it made its own pocket. Surely if drilled into colored water would leak out. 3. Anyone else find it amazing that the resin didn't crack out like previous items Nick cast have done when liquid was involved? He's done flowers, and who can forget the dragonfly? Those were heated by the resin, and dried out by the resin causing it to crack out ruining the piece. Interesting that this didn't do that... My hypothesis as to why it didn't is two-fold : 1. He let the resin come up in temp before adding the ice so it was already nearly at its highest temp when he added the ice. 2. Because it was nearly at temperature and began its final setting the resin didn't have enough hear energy to melt the ice, as well as raise the now water's temperature to a boiling point in which steam would be created which would cause a crackout. Also: I believe the blue one leaked as it wasn't fully encapsulated because the resin was hardening as he tried to push it down in. Cool experiment platying with thermodynamics!
