Nick mate. When you added pressure to the pot, the air in the balloon did the same as the bubbles in the resin. It compressed to a fraction of its atmospheric size. Paint a balloon with resin and let is set (open ended). Do that a few times to make it strong then try that "resin balloon".
@highplainsrider8734
@highplainsrider8734 3 жыл бұрын
That is over complicating it. Seriously a plastic tube down the middle solves the issue just spray the tube with mold release problem solved the balloon is a bad plan and over complicating the whole thing. I done the plastic tube many times to cut down on material needing to be removed and to avoid the need for so much resin. Just a quick additional note here spray the tube before putting it in the bucket other wise you will get mold release on your first layer of resin and packing material causing it to possibly separate or crack.

I was just going to ask if anyone else was yelling at the screen that putting an inflated balloon in a pressure pot will effectively deflate the balloon, then it will try to reinflate as you vent the pressure.

As a scuba diver… when air is put under pressure is compresses, or expands under a vacuum. So when you pressurize the pot the ballon shrinks dramatically. On the other hand, water does not compress. If you use a water balloon you will not get shrinkage. But the best option would be to simply use a piece of PVC pipe that has the bottom sealed and the top open. You could the just turn the PVC out… not to mention that the pipe is perfectly round so you can chuck it up to true up the cylinder and cut the base for when you flip it over.

I’m surprised the resin didn’t melt the foam. Usually that type of packing is made of cornstarch. When you were talking about the texture they reminded me of lava rocks. Wished you had left the bottom on to make it a footed vase. It had a really cool shape before you cut off the bottom and the round wood block.

I suggested he keep his towel wrapped around him till he was ready to dress. He scoffed at my suggestion till a couple days later when our daughter walked in, pointed at his….package, and said “Balloon popped.” He started dressing right after showering.

Have a crazy idea for you Nick for a say 2-4 part video project that will combine your woodworking skill and resin making into something one of a kind. Make a billiards table where the balls, table legs, and table top are made with resin while everything else is made with wood. Table top not including the bumper rails. Figure a colored resin table top and the different colored balls would be interesting in resin. Just a thought.

Hi, Nick. This project is very cool. And all your other works. . You can do something unusual, by taking several different colored caramel candies. Only pre-coat them with varnish, so that the color does not flow. It will be similar to the table you made earlier. But you can come up with something else. Some unusual vase or something.

You can get long cardboard tubes with the right diameter (3 to 4inches) pretty easily. They’re used for shipping sheets of stuff that has to be rolled up, not that kind from paper towels, the walls should be thick enough to not collapse surrounded by resin. They use them to ship carpet for example, or rolled up vinyl flooring. You could use shorter pieces in the middle of any pot or bowl. Cut a round piece of thin plywood to fit snugly in the bottom of the container you’ll pour in, hot glue the tube to it. The cardboard will be easy to remove on the lathe. You waste a lot of material gouging out the resin or wood inside of your bowls as it is. Insert pieces like the balloon was supposed to be will save money.

Ripping up the Packing Peanuts into irregular shapes and sizes could give an even more organic look. It would be fun to play with the color pallets. Could do a pair in opposite tones, one with just the cool blues and greens and the other in warm tones. Seem like a versatile material that can be manipulated a lot of ways. What kind of texture would it have if it was shredded? Or sliced up into little donuts? Cut up lengthwise into little sticks? So many possibilities.

You could try casting a smooth silicone blank with a handle to aid removal and lead shot imbedded at the base. Bit of mould release (when you remember) and it should pop out, could also have a hole in the middle where you stuff something hard, stretching the blank out so it shrinks a little when you remove it.

That is pretty cool. I like the texture, that’s an unusual way and adds depth and makes it more 3D. Wow! 7 lbs…. Almost like a newborn!!! LOL!! Take care and blessings!

Spray mold release on the outside of one of your mixing cups and put it in the middle to create a void and you can take out the cup when it's set

You should use stabalising resin first on the chips before casting the full block. That would reduce the tearing and voids in the chips on the lathe
