This keeb is for gamers who want to say they have a custom keyboard. They *want* north facing LEDs, so they can properly illuminate their shine-through and pudding keycaps. Most of us were like this once. This is an accessible stepping stone into the hobby. Many will get this and be happy, and a (in)lucky few will go down the rabbit hole and quickly upgrade.
@sish99122 жыл бұрын
I guess, but tbh its honestly just another unnecessary stepping stone. Most who have money would go from big brand gaming (corsair, razer, logitech, etc.) to maybe ducky or keychron, and then into the rabbit hole. With the bigger companies becoming slightly more "custom" recently, NZXT's keyboards aren't even really new in any way. It's just another subpar board with none of the gaming advantages (optical and analog switches) and the same level of customizability as the big brands now. Pretty much, they're late and hyping an extraordinarily average board. (P.S. it's "unlucky" not "inlucky," just letting you know)
@literate-aside2 жыл бұрын
@@sish9912 It was a typo, but I'm sure you surmised that 😉 To each their own, but I disagree with the premise that they're adding nothing new. Have you seen the builder? You can select layout, size, base colour, switches, base keycap colour, accent colour, accent cable style and cable colour. Then there's multiple matching mice and desk mats to select from too. No scrolling through endless SKUs, just a straight forward, step-by-step selection process, that's cheap enough to make decent switches your first 'mod'. It's hotswap, RGB, and basic enough for anyone to follow with clear instructions. All for just $130, plus an admittedly expensive build option if you don't feel comfortable with peripheral Lego. It's definitely not something that appeals to me, but I can absolutely see its place in the market as a 'my first custom'. I wouldn't be surprised if it was rather successful, and competitors followed suit. In fact I'm not aware of any mainstream brand that's offering that level of customisability or flexibility, especially at that price point. I'm happy to be proven wrong if you're aware of a similar product from one of the big boys?

with an increasing improvement in budget keyboards with the release of things such as the qk65 its ridiculous to even consider a keyboard like this for any beginner, it may be an interesting concept of hand-picking parts for more of a gamer, and not an enthusiast, but currently you can create a high-end sounding keyboard for a similar price making it not even a consideration.

TBH, Cherry profile is really only very common in enthusiast circles and with companies that engage with the enthusiast community. Most of us forget that OEM profile is called OEM for a reason, and is why most mainstream keyboard makers couldn't give a rat's ass about north facing LED's. I'm also a minority within the hobby, I guess, since I just don't prefer Cherry over taller profiles.

after buying this keyboard for a few months i found workarounds to the issues I have faced and have also been shown in the video. Issues in video Stabilizers: I also lubed them but still found them to rattle so i replaced them with durock plate mounts and lubed them, i also did tape them as well Glued Wires: I found i was able to slip a small screwdriver and unscrew the USB Daughter board, this requires nothing extra as it uses the same bit. No Flex: I opted to replace the foam with pillow foam and unscrew the top plate a bit Issues I had that were not in the video Issue 1: Hotswap socket breaking. I really don't know how to put this but either I have a defective model or this might happen to many of them, I only replaced the switch once and it worked perfectly fine for a few months, one day I noticed that my K key had stopped working, I took the board apart and found that the copper pin of the switch was not making contact with the socket, despite being fully in. I opted to fix it the janky way by sacrificing a switch that came with the board. I cut the pin off of one switch and sort of jammed it in the backside of the socket ^This issue is not solved as now sometimes it will type the letter twice instead of once but i'm too lazy to figure out what causes it, I'm assuming its the pin i jammed in not being seated for a second when I press the key hard. Complaints: It took me 3 months to figure out what the side buttons do. The top and bottom were easy to figure out, The top is a mute output button. The bottom is a Brightness changer for the RGB. However It took me until a month ago to figure out the middle button. I believe it is a game mode that turns off the windows key. What I do not like, however is that the buttons are not remappable.

@EightNineOne2 жыл бұрын
I mean the hot glue is actually kind of a good thing for a pre-built, you can normally pop hot glue off with a sharp knife and there's no risk of the cable coming out and people wondering why their keyboard has stopped working. They've still used a connector rather than soldering the wires straight to the board, which WOULD be a dick move.
@spellfox_2 жыл бұрын
I guess that's an argument but how would the cable come out? You could probably throw your keyboard off a cliff and the cable wouldn't come out.
@EightNineOne2 жыл бұрын
@@spellfox_ that's a little hyperbolic. Vibration from transport or a small drop is sufficient. We're talking about a plastic tab less than 1mm tall. Also companies don't spend extra money on things for no reason. It costs more to add a connector than directly soldering, it also costs more having an additional operation to add the hot glue during manufacture.

For the bent plate, you found the 2 screws under the rubber feet on the wheel side, you didnt crack it open, right? RIGHT? (tbf, putting those screw under there was an ass, anti mod move too...) For the glued wires, you can unscrew the side buttons daughter board and bypass the glue problem ! The software exist but is pretty limited, keymapping is limited to moving keys (as they are on the keyboard) around, no layers or fine keymap customisation. And even on the RGB, brand competitors do it way better. Also, i dont know for the one you got, but mine (the first) came with a really, REALLY, strong pink hue while rgb where on white, i needed to offset everything a lot to get right colors. I got a replacement who is better, but still pink...
@TjPhysicist Жыл бұрын
that's unfortunate about the sw, honestly at this point for anything aimed at customizability if it isn't fully qmk compatible it immediately gets a 0/10 from me. there's absolutely no reason why you would make a pcb or get one made and not just use the already existing qmk and via sw and code, i cannot imagine that is anything but more work to make your own customization thing and at that point is just being anti open source

Darn, when I first heard about this board I though it looks pretty good... I do like the minimal design, although the 75%+ one does look pretty crowded. I wouldn't buy it, but it would be good for the mainstream companies to up the competition. Too bad it turned out to be more over priced gamer plastic... Although, I might give them a break about gluing in the cable unless they specifically market the board as moddable. The vast majority of people looking for a board from a mainstream company aren't going to open it up, and things certainly come loose in shipping. The glue prevents that. However if the board is marketed toward enthusiasts it should be designed with modding in mind.

While the points you made are valid, I doubt the people who would purchase this keyboard would ever take it apart much less know what the hell north facing or south facing LEDs are.

I still think that north facing LEDs is a poor choice for a non-enthusiast keyboard. People that don't know a lot will want to customize their keyboard (honestly customization is probably the main interest for a mech keyboard in the eyes of a non-enthusiast) with new keycaps and they will not look at the profile, the layout or the size of the keys, they will be like "Oh pretty keycaps, I buy" and end up with keycaps that does not work well with their keyboard because of LEDs (especially since cherry profile is one of the most popular one)
